Inside a Washing Machine Timer - ASMR

  • Relax as I open up an old washing machine timer just out of curiosity, and to also salvage the small low RPM electric motor within. In a previous video I replaced the timer in my Maytag washing machine and curious to see how these things look inside, I tear this old one down. I had originally intended to make this part of the timer replacement video but at the last minute choose to make into two separate videos.
You can watch the washing machine timer replacement video here:

Sorry about the audio being a little over-driven in this one.
A little about what it is I’m doing in my videos:
If you are wondering why am I whispering or talking in a soft tone, it’s because; this video is an ASMR relaxation video. What is ASMR? You can see for yourself by visiting the link at the very bottom of this page and reading about ASMR for yourself.
The videos on my You Tube channel portray some of the typical day-to-day things that I do for relaxation, as well my never ending chores. This video was produced with relaxation in mind and hopefully has some ASMR qualities. Stress is harmful to your well-being and in today's fast-passed world, stress management is important, and so I hope this ASMR video in some way acts as a stress-reliever for those watching, as well as a sleep-aid for anyone having a difficult time going to sleep.

A lot of ASMRists just do what they've seen others do but I like that youve always branched out into different things and I love how well it works

Tonight I took apart a Whirlpool timer that would go dead when it was time to pump out the water. The timer reverses the start winding input to kick the motor in the opposite rotation. I found a pair of points arc'd together. I was trying to take the plastic holder that holds the flexing ends of the leaf switches to gain access to the points. This vid shows how. Unfortunately I broke the clip that holds the push/pull shaft when I thought I needed to pull hard to pull the knob off.. it unscrews! I can probably find a junk timer and rob the parts I need.

I wish I could get replacement reed switches or just a reed. Excellent video. The dark areas in the drum seem to be from smoke from the contacts arcing. I'm looking for a good file to clean up my contacts without leaving any residue. I use with crc electronic contact cleaners to clean and protect. But still need a need file or timer won't function correctly. Great video on teardown.

    Dear Mr .Relaxing,
I have two questions which keep me from relaxing. 1) Why there are 3 prongs for 2nd ,3rd stages while only 2 prongs is enough for continuity. 2) There are only 4 stages for water fill, vane rotation, pump away dirty water & finally spin. Why there are 8 sets of prongs instead of 4 sets ???

  • @aaahandy

Dude I’m so confused! You did a great job with the tear down, but why didn’t you just clean up the contacts and put it back together? Reason is there are not to many videos showing this procedure. I will say it should still give people the encouragement to tear them done and clean the contacts, because if you hadn’t noticed they’re selling these refurbished timers for $130.00 on eBay. And all they did was resurfaced the contacts. And your video nearly hit the mark in the refurbished process.

This video stressed me out, I need to get my washer fixed ASAP to get my wife off my back. Still, glad you showed what's inside these things. Not sure if it will help me diagnose the timer that won't advance and how to test the motor that drives it. Does anyone know where I can find out how to test the little motor and what voltage should it get or ohms across it when disconnected?

Testing it now. After removing the plastic cover from the side with tge contacts I could use a small folded sandpaper to file clean one row of contacts. No need to bend tgem but hadto use a small screwdriver to lift them eniugh for the sandpaper. The white cylinder had one or two rows with black so I could tell where the bad contact might be. If this dossn't work I will just buy a new timer or machine. This one is 23 years old. Edit: Didnotwork. The slightest bend on the flimsy bars makes them hard to make a contact.

Unscrew the knob, carefully pull off the plastic shield, carefully pry off the turning plastic knob that was under the plastic shield (like with a flathead screwdriver). That reveals the two screws holding the timer in place. You probably knew that you have to undo the 2 long screws in front and the 2 small screws in back holding that top panel in place. Don't lose your screws! Unplug the electric plug into the timer, and then it's out!

yourmaster1994 Umm....yeah, that's it. It was all just a test ;) Actually though, I guess I was so caught up in thinking how funny it was that I lost sight of what kind of video this was and how it was being used as a relaxing sleep-aid and to be quite honest, it was poor judgement on my part to put him in the video. I'm glad this wasn't met with any "real" outcry and I appreciate everyone's good nature:)
