The way the Stargate dialing works in the original 1994 movie is way different than the way it works in SG-1 and Atlantis. They made it so you can dial faster, like you dialing a phone number, so they add some intense last second escapes from enemy territory... what if the SG-1 team had to wait there for like 2 minutes for the stupid thing to spin and slowly dial every symbol?
It was actually a production limitation - They carried the gate prop to wherever they had to shoot off-world scenes. They couldn’t bring the original gate, the one we always saw in the base which could spin bc it was too heavy so instead they had a different gate prop which was lighter and easier to carry around but this one couldn’t spin. So if you see an off-world scene, it never actually spins.
I understand the first 6 symbols pinpoint to a particular planet in space. But the point of origin symbol doesn’t make sense to me. How can the planet you’re going to use 6 symbols but the point of origin (the planet you’re coming from) only uses one symbol? Shouldn’t it be like a 12 symbol address?
the Point of Origin symbol is distinct for each gate. So for instance the iconic arrow with a circle over it is the symbol specific to the gate used by the SGC. it is not a coordinate but is instead basically the symbol differentiating that gate from all other gates in the system

It would be cool if when you clicked on the open gate it would play the gate travel effect and the view would be taken to a different scene

cause it tells the gate that your dialing to let it know so it can provide a stable wormhole from the planet your on to it
