Proud to have been part of the Blackbird program during the 80s. Such a majestic bird. Miss her terribly.
Must have been a hell of an experience!
That’s an SR71B which is training version. In this airframe, back seat is not for RSO but for instructor pilot. Back seat in standard SR71 was flush with aircraft, only had side windows and could not see pilot. I was stationed at Beale AFB in the 70s and worked on the flight line so got to watch this fly. Takeoffs on a clear night were spectacular. See correction below.
Actually, this is the SR71C
After a crash in 957, this one was assembled using 2 aircraft portions.
956, the only remaining B model is here about 35 miles away from me in Kalamazoo, Mi.
@@williamvoorhees8201 oops. I forgot about the C model. Thanks for the correction. I worked on the flight line from January 72 to July 75. This model first flew on 14 March 1969. I assume over my time at Beale, I saw all that were still flying. I feel very lucky.
I watched an SR-71 takeoff in the evening at RAF Mildenhall, a LONG time ago now. One of the most incredible things I have ever seen. One of the hangars at the end of the runway has little SR-71 metal emblems in the walkways in the admin part. It is sad that young people won't get to see these masterpieces of aviation fly again.
I have seen two of these in person but never the two sitter, so nice to see this configuration.
You’re totally awesome and thanks for your service
That particular model is the SR-71B. It's was used as a trainer. Only 2 were produced, as well as 1 SR-71C, which was a hybrid aircraft composed of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A (S/N 60-6934) and the forward fuselage from an SR-71 static test aircraft...
I think I would lose my MIND if I were in the presence of such an amazing piece of aircraft!!! Omg 😮💪 the SR-71 blackbird was my first love of aircraft’s, then it was the B-2 Spirit bomber, and the F-117A nighthawk. That would be an absolute DREAM to be able to see any or all of them IN person. Thank you for sharing these awesome aircraft’s and experiences with us all. 😃💪
Yeah it’s awesome 😎
Got to see one in person at the Pima Air and space museum in Arizona. Must have spent half and hour chatting with the museum workers lol
I thought the A-12 was slightly faster because it didn’t hold as much fuel as the SR71. A cool side note when I was a kid in the late 70’s this guy would come over to my Grand parents house for Easter. He knew I loved planes and he told me about a plane that was so fast at full speed to make a 180 degree turn it would cover a couple of states. A few decades later when the program was declassified I was convinced he worked for skunkworks. Was never able to confirm it as they all passed. Perhaps he didn’t think a 9 year old was a security threat.😂
Love the video and the plane. It would great to see it without the fisheye distortion.
You flew with the Thunderbirds so i had to see you fly . Ive been going to air shows since 1975. I served in the USAF also and so did my father.
The most bad ass aircraft ever.
Awesome jet on so many levels
The A7 Corsair II makes me feel all good inside. Is that an Air National Guard A7 or one of the last variants? The engineering of the SR71 is remarkable. That museum is fascinating, one can probably spend the whole day there, love the channel 💯
The faster the SR-71 travels the less fuel it burns. At around Mach 3.3 the outer fuselage surfaces become so hot, they become translucent. That enables you to see the outline of the engines, and internal airframe.
I don’t know if this is true, but at lunchtime the pilot presses his pre cooked lunch against the inside of the crystal quartz canopy, which heats-up his lunch, making it ready to eat.
I tell ya, you really really ought to do an interview with Mr. Brian Shul. Dude is a real character.
I think he died recently
@@k.h.1587 Damn, did not know that. 😔
I keep looking at that SEXY Thunderbird F-16 in the background. Such a beauty!!!
THANK YOU MAX FOR SHOWING WHAT WAS TOP SECRET AIRCRAFT. A STUNNING DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED TECNOLOGY ONLY AMERICA CAN DO. WOULD YOU LIKE TO FLY IT.
BUT LOOK AT THE A-7!😍😍😍😍
This model is the trainer version with two pilots and two control sticks 🚀
Have you ever heard the "LA Speed Check" story? Its a hilarious story told by an SR-71 pilot. Its on youtube...just look it up...might even be fun to review as a video.. Love your channel...
6:00 I know it's a wide angle camera which accentuates the shape, but still, this angle looks BAD-ASS.
Of course everyone knows about the Blackbird leaking fuel when it's on the ground, because of the gaps in the panels. And it's perfectly safe as well, as the JP-7 fuel is actually very hard to ignite. But I was always thinking, why not have fuel tanks inside of the aircraft to prevent the leaking? I didn't realise that that would add weight, compromising performance. It's one of the things that makes this an absolute beast. Just out of this world. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if there are still some SR's secretly kept in service.
Btw, I think this is an SR-71B trainer variant? The regular SR-71 has the second cockpit flush with the fuselage (and not sticking out).
Right there with you my guy.
You are correct. This an SR71B trainer. As I recall, there were 2 of these made.
Great vid!
Thank you
You bet! Thanks for swinging by 😎
Might have to go back to the hill afb museum to this this again
3:02 it was a transformers in one of the movies
look at the structure on that aircraft.
It's tough looking at the amount of dust and dirt that has covered this amazing machine. Just doesn't seem right...
Equally surprising is how chonking the A7 is.
Did you ever fly formation with a 71 Max?
Gonna have to change your channel name to Infinite Afterburner 😂
All righty then, let's check it out.
Isn't it great that we all "fhat know" that our country has aircraft with more capabilities in service than have been deployed for the past thirty years,? I truly wonder whether the 71 was still capable from other platforms? Probably to this day we won't know, all the way back to the "A-12" days. Thank God we are American, and Thank You for your service.
There was one more "oddity," as it looks as if the Vought F-8 Crusader, used by the Navy, had camouflage paintwork when this is a USAG bird?
What happened to your other channe? 😮
whos to say were not still using these? i seen a photo of a selfie a u2 plane took of itself and the chinese spy ballon.. wasnt that taking out of service more than 30 years ago?
My understanding is the SR71 is dark blue not black.
Billion dollars hanger right there
Mmmm. I love big cones. Am I right Max!?
😂
Got to listen to ATC with the SR-71 from takeoff from Homestead AFB until asking for final into Beale AFB. From the time it went wheels up until it requested final was 19 minutes. One fast bird!
Sorry Max the Sr-71 IS NOT THE FASTEST. The Lockheed A-12 was faster.. which is the father of the sr-71
While this is true, due to the secrecy of the A-12, it was unable to apply for an official speed record
Ignore this comment
This video has been done over and over and over and over again. Try something original.
What's wrong with this guy's right arm? I can hardly watch the video.
Ha. It’s the camera stick, with some little video anomaly around it
Haha wait what??
EASY-DON'T WATCH
I was wondering about that too!😂
