Puddles has an amazing amount of power to his voice. I find it incredible how restrained he was in this performance to essentially take a supporting role for Haley. Also, an incredible twist to see the 6'8 guy dressed as a clown take the straight man role here, laying down a buttery-smooth canvas for Haley to paint with ALL the colors.
Yes! The restraint is exactly what I appreciate about this. He supports her and gives her the space to do her flourishes. Very refreshing to hear when so many singers think they always need to go all out on everything.
@@involunteer Absolutely this. A skilled singer knows how to use many colors in their voice. A truly gifted singer also knows when to limit themselves to one or two. Puddles is truly gifted.
My introduction to Puddles was a video clip from an audition episode of "___'s Got Talent" or "The X Factor" or some such show. Not really my thing, but he's certainly very talented and clever, deserving a lot of respect for his craft.
It was pretty clear the song was intended to be a duet and Haley totally upstaged Puddles. I think he responded to that by taking the supporting role and it showed total class on his part. She is a skilled vocalist so as I see it she showed arrogance and a pretty inflated ego to stomp all over Puddles in vocals. This could have been one of the best duets ever, but Haley backed Puddles down to a back up singer. It was very disappointing.
@@awg6397 I had watched this MANY times...and tried VERY hard to see some tiny bit of Haley...but it wasn't until Elizabeth pointed it out that I saw the shadow to the left!

That's the one that introduced me to Puddles. And the only version of the song I've ever listened to. I still play it once in a while when I need a Puddles fix.

I had never seen a literal jaw drop before that moment he started singing, but from then on, the only clown my wife doesn't fear is Puddles.
I saw Puddles a couple of years back and they actually told the crowd to record video. I was front row and he came off the stage while singing "Unchained Melody", took my phone, and recorded himself singing while walking around then gave me phone to a random person and did the same with her phone. At the end of the song about a dozen of us had to meet by the stage to get our phones back. :-P It was the most FUN concert I've been to.
I really liked how the two interacted: the dance moves, holding and swinging hands, and the hug at the end for examples. I think it added to the emotions of the story.
Puddles, Chandelier on America's got Talent 2017. He starts out as a silent mime and every jaw dropped in the whole audience, judges included, when he started to sing. Most people don't know his name, he is just Puddles Pity Party.
there was a comment on the song that took the vid to a new level for me, They look like a girl and her invisible “imaginary” friend that protects her from bullies and anyone that would harm her, but is also a big softie and is scared of mice
Funny. I had thought about this the other way -- she's the imaginary friend, socially adroit where he's awkward, protecting him from the Mad World. It's why she pops out of nowhere!
I like the idea they're two parts of the same soul, Puddles is the true feelings and emotions hidden deep down and Haley is the 'face' that he puts on to show other people, 'coping' and being cheerful, with the dark humor and jokes, talking about how they want to die like its the best thing that could happen for them.
I like the way that the two singers interacting altered the emotional context of the original song. It didn’t feel flippant to me, rather it felt like what it feels like when friends with different emotional problems use their relationship to balance each other. The world is mad, he is depressed, and she is nervously manic. Together however he can support her by anchoring her in the moment when she looses herself and she can pull him into motion when he is stuck in the mire. The world is mad, but each time they sing it together it is sweeter and more light hearted than the last. I don’t know, maybe I’m reading to much into it.
Haley feels like Puddles emotional support in this performance. Like an extra layer they put in, the extrovert helping the introvert be comfortable. Literally everything about these two contrasts in this video.
been a Puddles Pity Party watcher (and listener with Post Modern Jukebox , Puddles does a brilliant version of Lorde's "Royals") so looking forward to this.
I didn't have the same impression. They both sounded great separately but I felt they had trouble blending. I also didn't find that there were enough through-lines to give the song a sense of cohesion. It was interesting but not one I'd come back to. Adam Lambert did a mad world cover a while ago that I like far better.
JFYI - when referencing "original", keep in mind that Donnie Darko version of Mad World by Gary Jules is a cover as well. Original version was performed by Tears For Fears and sounds quite different
I’ve found that while I dislike the original Tears for Fears songs, I usually really love the covers of their songs. So thanks to TfF for writing songs that are covered so well.
Puddles has a very rich baritone. He used to perform at Teatro Zinzani in Seattle, WA. His Puddles character is interesting because he never talks, just sings.

They cut him because the show is totally fake. They know who the finalists and probably even winner will be before the first episode is shot. The early rounds usually debut one or two acts each episode that will make it to the finale, several that would have no hope of advancing, one or two that are good but just not good enough, one or two that have emotionally compelling backstories (sometimes the actual finalists do), and one or two that are established and talented but not well known. They're basically ringers to keep the show interesting. If there's a really highly talented act that gets cut in the first one or two rounds, they were probably already professionally performing and scouted for paid appearances on the show and are just there to spice things up for the audience.
When Simon cut him, he did so to create drama for the show, and was almost pleading for Howie to defend him in order to keep Puddles in the running, but Howie didn't follow Simon's lead.
Puddles concerts are so much fun! I haven't seen Haley live yet but I hope I will someday. This arrangement is so great -- the way Haley comes in and jazzes things up is epic.
Someone 5'2" can easily hide behind someone 6'8". Mike Geier stays solidly to his Puddles persona when he is in costume and Geier treats him as a separate person. That takes work. Haley's voice is reminiscent of the club singers of the era she portrays.
You have perfect mastery over your facial expressions to convey what you want the audience to feel. I'm guessing it happened along side your vocal training. Killer job.
That was a performance of PMJ, I have not seen before and I am very thankful I did. Furthermore, that is the first time I got to listen to Puddles and that was quite the experience. His voice is amazing. It has depth, clarity and can relate emotion very very well. His body language and facial expressions were also on point. Definitely need to hear more from him on the channel. As for the performance overall, it was unsurprisingly great and very creative, especially the moment in which Haley appeared. I believe there is no need to say it, but Haley is ridiculously good and for me is one of the best in the world. Coming from a person who is extremely TERRIFIED of CLOWNS, Puddles is a different story. His makeup & costume does not terrify enough like most clowns do. But a couple years ago my boyfriend and I watched his AGT audition that was on my recommended and we REALLY liked his voice. It is so smooth! So we ended up on a Puddles binge for an hour or so listening to many of his covers. You have been missing out. His covers on his channel are really good too. MAD WORLD is one of my favorite songs by the original artist "Tears for Fears". I grew up in the 90's listening to 80's music a lot. And Tears for Fears is one of my favs from that era. It hurts my music soul when most ppl only reference the darker version, which don't get me wrong is beautiful & Adam Lambert did a great cover, but the original is a bit faster with great music parts that truly make you feel a little "Mad". lol just putting that out there since it is my fav song of "Tears for Fears". ua-cam.com/video/u1ZvPSpLxCg/v-deo.html
Wow. Thanks for that experience. I came here for your charming reactions and nerdy commentary (passion goes a long way, and you makes me listening to music in a completely different way now). But today I had to pause the video and go watch the original clip a couple of times without distraction, I fell in love along the way apparently, and I came back here for the closest thing to the special feeling of listening to new music with friends, something I haven't done since... the early 90's? Thanks for that Elizabeth!
I know absolutely nothing about voice control and singing however I love watching your videos because your love for music is so obviously apparent in your expressions, smiles, and giggles.
Of all the reviews I watch, not only of this song but of many others, yours I enjoy the most! Some reviewers just waffle on, your comments come across as more knowledge based and technical. I love watching your facial expressions, you can tall what you are thinking before you pause the video and comment. Your excitement and passion for music is infectious! There are so many of your reviews I could mention, but not on this fantastic songs page!!
I feel like Haley's voice overwhelmed Puddles. She has such a strong voice and timbre that it can drown out others. He was definitely toning it down and I don't think things were as balanced as they could have been.
I actually enjoyed the contrast of their voices. I sort of know what you mean but I also liked the difference and found similarities in a disassociated sense.
"I feel it's kind of funny, I feel it's kind of sad" This perfectly encapsulates the archetype of the clown. They put so much thought into the arrangement, the vocal performances, and the physical performances -- and somehow managed to blend them all into something where each supported the other and built upon it... ! So much artistic effort.

You should react to his cover of "Chandelier" by Sia, from America's Got Talent, next
One of the most interesting and creative covers I have ever heard.
They balance and compliment each other so well.
I found Puddles a few years ago and I wish he would do more.. HE IS KING! !
That was exquisite! I love Puddles and this combo of these two singers and how they worked together on this amazing arrangement was magic.
Hes 6'8" and shes 5'2", No wonder she can hide behind him. I never realized how tall he was when watching the talent shows hes in.
Haley was on American Idol ten years ago. I never thought about her being short because she performed big.
Post modern jukebox has SO many talented musicians that they collaborate with. I only discovered them fairly recently and I just love their stuff.
Doesn't get much better than Haley and Puddles together. Love how they did this song.
I know absolutely nothing about voice control and singing however I love watching your videos because your love for music is so obviously apparent in your expressions, smiles, and giggles.
PMJ never use pitch correction. Everything is done live and raw.
Yeah, what in the world is she talking about.
Damn right. What an outrageous comment.
because most places she hears music from do use pitch correction and perhaps she doesn't realize that PMJ has the integrity to never do that.
This song is so sooo dark and so cheery at the same time. Fascinating.
Love Puddles. Check out his version of Disturbs version of Sound of Silence.
That and Crazy Train was crazy good.
Yes is version of Sound of Silence is a must to be seen
So Puddles does a version of Disturbed's version of the Simon & Garfunkle song Sound of Silence then?
@@tattoou1222 LOL!
You mean his version of the Simon & Garfunkle song Sound of Silence. Disturbs is a cover, the original is better imo.
You are the most authentic "voice coach" reviewer on UA-cam. I love and appreciate your perspective. Thanks.
Puddles is 6'8" tall. It's perfectly possible for a shorter woman to hide behind him when he's in costume and not moving. He's enormous.
There are so many of your reviews I could mention, but not on this fantastic songs page!!
live recording in the room is Scott's thing since he started this project. Same audio is also used for the CD releases.
Haley and puddles are so good together... I love this version.. They both have so so much cool talent..
I feel like Haley's voice overwhelmed Puddles. She has such a strong voice and timbre that it can drown out others. He was definitely toning it down and I don't think things were as balanced as they could have been.
I've always felt this too
Totally agree.
I actually enjoyed the contrast of their voices. I sort of know what you mean but I also liked the difference and found similarities in a disassociated sense.
@@stephenseay3878 Your point is good, but at the same time, the vocal mixing is off. She's great, but I want to hear him, too, and I can't.
"I feel it's kind of funny, I feel it's kind of sad"
This perfectly encapsulates the archetype of the clown. They put so much thought into the arrangement, the vocal performances, and the physical performances -- and somehow managed to blend them all into something where each supported the other and built upon it... ! So much artistic effort.
Hayley's singing overall but in particular during the 3/4 sections is one of the most beautiful sounds I think I have ever heard.
I am a PMJ fan. I sort of stumbeld on to Charismatic Voice 3 days ago. Now I have watched many previews and love every one of them. You make music fun to watch because you are fun to watch. Love the expresions and the pure joy you show in reviewing the music video's. I am now a big fan of Charismatic Voice. Thank you.
Haley has an amazing voice. All her stuff is awesome 👌
I would have never seen this performance if you hadn’t featured it. The only words I can think of to describe it are amazing and a virtuoso performance. If I hadn’t heard your commentary I would have missed a lot. Thank you for opening my eyes and ears!
You should watch Puddles on AGT where he sings "Chandelier." It's magnificent.
Your "music ear" is phenomenal. I have been playing music for decades on stages all over, not sure how you hit my feed but I am not upset. You keep being you, you are awesome at it.
Some other Post Modern Jukebox home runs are, Miche Braden doing the best rendition of Sweet Child 'O Mine EVER & Nicole Atkins' version of Heros by Bowie.
Sorry, but no. Heimatdamisch owns Sweet Child O' Mine and they're never giving it back.

Always loved Puddles, since he was on America's Got Talent. He's really subdued in this duet. He usually comes through with a more operatic style.
One of my FAV Puddles songs is “Palms” written by Sxip Shirey, it’s here on YT, so heartfelt and a great video ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Your joyful reactions to this video are beautiful and sincere. Far and away the best reactionary video I've had the pleasure to watch. Thumbs up 👍
I love Puddles. Been a fan since 2013. First song I heard was his cover of Royals. I can't hear it any other way after that.
I couldn't tell you how many times I've listened to this song, but I've never noticed a lot of the bits under the music.
Thanks you for showing them to me. : )
Yesss i suggested puddles a few times, he is an incredible singer. His channel is full of gems.
I saw Puddles in a small theatre in London back n 2015. He never speaks a single word, a real cabaret show, then stands outside on the street for us to take selfies (still not speaking of course). Brilliant. ;-)
Haley's voice is so big, i nearly forgot there was a 6'8" clown standing center stage. Amazing rendition of this song, so well done
I love watching when serious vocal talent is presented to you. Your joy, elation, delight, just plain happy is wonderful to see.
THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO PUDDLES! Puddles is a Pacific Northwest Institution. You HAVE to react to his version of "When I'm Down". It's epic and heart-wrenching.
I love music but I know nothing about the how. I find myself looking closer at the screen and listening to you explaining things and going so much deeper than I ever had. And giving me insight as to why I feel the way I do listening to it. Thank you..
Puddles rocks. His version of bridge over troubled water is amazing.
Excellent cover, definitely a good video to watch if you need a cry
Daaaaaang! Thanks to Elizabeth I've spent hours down the puddles rabbit hole. dude is legit ! I'm now a fan of another style of music. 😊😎
Welcome to the Party.
It's a great performance, both musically and visually. Lots of fun.
I love Puddles so much. After this one, be sure to check out his performance of "I (Who Have Nothing)" at Paste Studios. So much character, he's too good. ua-cam.com/video/qawfJ_JtZ_o/v-deo.html
I love that one. Also if you've never seen it, you must see the Houston Public Media performance of "I Started A Joke".
This is a great performance
It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a formal vocal class/around other trained vocalist, and I currently work as a singer for a band. I’m now binge watching your videos because it’s therapeutic to hear the terminology and see someone relate to singing in a way I haven’t seen or heard in years. It’s like talking with an old friend who gets it. So thank you for the content! 💕
I almost feel like when puddles starts to dance in sink with her, the personna of "Puddles" hates the whole concept, but then he perfectly uses tonality to convey his feelings, as if to say, "I'll do this, but everything still sucks."
PMJ and Puddles _ All the Small Things, simply sublime
That feeling of rich chocolate melting in my mouth, but instead it’s in my ears
Best reaction in any reaction video I've seen on youtube. Her joy is awesome
Been waiting for this for almost a year. I wish it was hallelujah tho. Or Chris Cornell when I'm down
His version of Hallelujah is one of the best I've ever heard! ❤️
When I'm Down is amazing!
This was just beautiful! Thanks for introducing it to me, and thanks again for your analysis 🙂
I can't believe I'm going to miss the stream on this one! I absolutely love Puddles Pity Party and what he does with his covers. Enjoy this one!
We missed you! I hope you're there for the next one then.
I saw a mini doc on "Big Mike", can't remember where but it was awesome to get to know the guy behind the makeup. Thank you Elizabeth for featuring him.
they're version of All the Small Things shows off puddles range much more and the depth he can pull in his voice. i'd recommend that one for a watch.
Love the technical breakdown of technique you do. Very interesting. More Puddles please! He's awesome.
Puddles Royals is an amazing example of his talents.
“This is totally not what I was expecting!” Yes! Exactly!
Puddles does 90% covers, but he has a few originals. There's one called "All The World is Asleep Tonight".
Could ya? 😄
Thanks for reacting to this performance! I love it when vocal experts analyze Puddles' singing
The handholding reminds me of Moonraker somehow with jaws and his gf:-)
lol
This is the best "vocal coach reacts" kind of channel I have ever seen! I LOVE your content! 👏👏 You talk about such interesting things and very clearly have a lot of experience and ear training. I LOVE your insights in this, and other videos! I look forward to watching more! 🥰
Anything Puddles does w/PMJ is money, but you should find the video of him walking into a cafe and singing to a live, unsuspecting crowd
