    A good ride through these two great places. I live overseas now but lived in both Petoskey and Harbor Springs and went to school in both places. I'm homesick and nostalgic, so thanks. I must say, though, you need to be more careful driving. You went through a pedestrian crosswalk in downtown Charlevoix, with people in it, without stopping, and you were 10 mph over the limit coming down Mitchell St hill into Petoskey. Traffic's bad enough, as you showed, without tourists breaking the rules. That said, I love your videos and have spent many hours watching them.

    Very enjoyable! 48 years ago I took a solo (no one else would go with me) bicycle trip around most of Lake Michigan, starting at Milwaukee and going north, through the UP, Mackinac Island, then south along the shore to Ludington. Took the Badger (run by C&O Railroad back then) across to Milwaukee to close the loop. I had hoped to bike across the Mighty Mac, but the hwy dept prohibited that. I had to rendezvous with a hwy worker and have him drive me across with my bike in the back of his truck. We had a great conversation despite my disappointment. He was fascinated by my ride. He explained that wind hazard can make cycling across the bridge too dangerous. This video retraces part of my adventure. Glad that little has changed, however I am noticing more traffic than in 1973, but that is to be expected. I'd like to reenact that ride before I get too old. Thanks so much for producing this. Your narratives prove that you have "done your homework".

    • @ChrisHarden
      @ChrisHarden  3 роки тому +1

      That's fascinating. I would love to do a bike trip like that as well. Must've taken you a couple days. I think that traffic was up during my trip in particular because it was one of the last decent weather days of the year before the winter (on a weekend) and everyone wanted to get out of the house due to being cooped up from the COVID lockdowns.

      @@ChrisHarden 10 days for the entire trip, including 1 whole day on the island, and 1 whole day hanging out in Ludington waiting for SS Badger. If I decide to re-do the trip I'll look you up. You can mount the GoPro on your helmet!

    Awesome video! Took a circle tour roadtrip in 2018 that went through Charlevoix and Petoskey. It was a lot of fun to explore the downtowns and the waterfronts and parks. Great job! One thing I noticed though, at 4:50 you indicated that the first bridge was built in the 1940s. The current bridge was built in the 1940s...there have actually been 5 bridges throughout history there, with the first one being built in the 1800s. By the bridge, there's a nice informational sign showing the history. And yes, all that traffic was definitely because of the bridge going up...got to experience it myself :) Loved exploring the park in Petoskey at the waterfront and along the river...I was very surprised to find such a gem right in the heart of the town! And I remember those beautiful homes in Bay View -- they stand out distinctly in my memory. Cheers

      Four generations of my family worked on building either the bridges or the channel works. My great-grandfather in the 1870's-80's, my grandfather when they built the swing bridge, my father on the current bridge, and my late brother when they put in the sheep piling lining the channel in the 1970's.

    Great video. Lake Charlevoix, Walloon Lake, and Torch Lake are just so beautiful. I spent time on all three growing up in Michigan. The limestone bottoms and crystal clear turquoise waters are just breathtaking. My only suggestion on this video that drove me nuts over and over was your pronunciation of “Charlevoix”. The name may very well be pronounced the way you pronounce it somewhere else in the world, but Michiganders never pronounce it with an up inflection on the end. If anything, they pronounce it with a slight up inflection toward the beginning. More like CHARlevoix.

    • @mikezylstra7514

      Hooked on phonics, I pronounce it shar-lih-voy-icks. Nobody from Michigan pronounces it shar-lih- vwah.

    I would guess the economies of this area, though designed around tourism, are primarily supported by the part time residents property taxes of their thousands of lakeside ‘cottages’, which are mostly valued way over a million dollars and not subject to the homestead tax exemption

    Just a few observations. How many of these residents are actually all year rounders? How many were retirees and/or ancestors of the auto workers? You can always tell the health of a town by the high number of new vehicles you see, the lack of for sale signs, school ratings, the lack of trash or junked cars out front and the yards all mowed. How about age groups and general demographics? Notice all the vote for Biden signs? I didn't think so.

    • @ChrisHarden
      @ChrisHarden  3 роки тому +1

      I think the year round populations are 2,500-ish for Charlevoix, and 5,500-ish for Petoskey. They both seemed like those size of towns respectively, but with traffic for the size of a city with 50,000. I was up on a weekend when people thought that there was going to be peak fall colors.
      With the prices up this way and considering that there’s not many jobs up here it’s safe to guess that a large percentage of them are retirees.
      Official US census data shows 23 percent of people in Emmet County are 65 or older, compared to 16 percent nationally.
