This movie was like a group project and Jonah carried the movie, Kenya just showed up for the presentation. I think you can tell who wrote what in this movie. The Jewish family is well written because Jonah wrote them, the black family wasn’t as well written because they were written by Kenya who only writes interracial couples and that dynamic. It’s like they wrote for two different movies and put it together.
This is a good point! I'm surprised the group didn't come to this conclusion, because that's exactly how it felt! I don't think the issue was so much "no Muslims were involved in writing", I think the issue is that Jonah put effort in his part and wrote what he knows while Kenya slacked...
2 things that would've made the movie more complete: A) Lauren's mutual feelings for Jonah because we got more of that from him. B) More interaction of Lauren's family dynamic and culture like we did Jonah's family at the beginning.
I think that's what Melissa was hinting at but was too polite to say when she said it seemed like Jonah created the movie by himself. The black characters weren't fully developed especially compared to the Jewish family. Angel later made the point but she compared the two religions and I also agree with that point.
The black family didn’t have to be Muslim at all. I feel like they just wanted to disrespect Muslims. When Jonah went with her dad all they did was the traditional black stuff. I.e basketball, barbershop, bloods and crips LA stuff. But the Jewish family did all the Jewish stuff
I was thinking how this type of story needed Issa she is much better at writing funny yet believable awkward dialogue. I also think she would have been better as a leading lady no shade to Lauren but I wasn’t loving her performance here it doesn’t help that her character wasn’t at all developed.
I agree it was a 6. I just needed ONE scene with Lauren London explaining to her girlfriends or mom why she loved Jonah. We got to hear him explain it to Sam Jay but nothing from her. They missed that. I love Sam Jay. Don’t forget she had her own show for 2 seasons inn HBO as well. She’s funny as hell! And she played herself.
I agree 💯 with you. I just didn’t get the chemistry from Lauren. My husband even said, halfway through, we have yet to see them even kiss. I just wish they dove a little more into their relationship and also Lauren’s parents a little more

The distinction wasn’t even delved into. Like are Jews even “white” considering their history in Europe and the US? They certainly weren’t treated as such in Europe, they were always historically seen as outsiders. The nuance of what it means to be Jewish vs just “white” was totally lost in this film. Very true it was hit or miss on that side, and people say it has to do with the fact that Jonah wrote the Jewish family very well while Kenya did not write the black family well - possibly because he’s used to an interracial family, or bc he’s not used to writing for a movie vs TV.
I'm glad to see Angel call out Kenya's obsession with biracial women, interracial relationships, and sneakers/hypebeast fashion. I think that quick line about Nia's white granfather was supposed to justify having a lightskinned/biracial as their daughter, but honestly it didn't need to be said. They could've casted a number of black actresses to play the ingenue. didn't know it was his film until after watching about 30% of the film and shutting it off. Afterwards, it made sense. I think prioritizing representation overshadowed what could've been a funny and intelligent movie.

All Angel was trying to say is that someone else could have delivered straight without compromising comedy.
The main subplot in 22 jump street is Jonah is dating Cube’s daughter so maybe that’s why they didn’t go that route. Pretty much exactly the same, only difference is he’s Jonah’s boss so it’s more about who his character is personally more than the fact that he’s white. Queen Latifah is his wife and they have a light skin daughter who is way too pretty for Jonah, but he makes her laugh.
How has Angel seen DAVE but not NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE? Angel if you see this, please watch Julia in New Adventures of Old Christine. I loved her in the series and she starred in it ! Super funny and entertaining
I'd give the movie about a 5, maybe 6 at best. There was a LOT that I felt could've been added to make the inter-character dynamics really stand out, especially since the base storyline is fairly common. I would agree that some of the casting choices left room to be desired, as well, and may have added to more on screen chemistry. Personally, at times it felt awkward to watch
And some of the jokes lingered or dragged way longer than they should have. It really did feel like a lot of missed potential. Idk if it was money, time, lack of imagination or the latter but the movie could have been so much more.
The best thing about this movie was Julia and the husband. It was NOT funny. It was a poor use of the legend that Eddie Murphy is. We didn’t need another interracial story. Lauren London isn’t a very good actress but she did better than I’ve seen her do before. The love they supposedly had for one another was not believable. They bought a house and then she encourage him to quit his job? Bad casting . Really unbelievable storyline.
The two parts that made me laugh out loud, was David Ducov....you know his name, when he sang Ordinary People and Julia singing that other song in the car
I agree Ice Cube would have been great for that role. Eddie Murphy gave me his brother Charlie Murphy’s energy (rip). He would have been a good fit as well.
Did not like the choices for the type of black family they were supposed to be. The Jewish fam was effortless & funny. The social commentary could have been made in a more sophisticated way. Some parts were incredibly funny. I didn’t like that the Jewish mom didn’t know about wigs when that is a part of Jewish culture as well
I literally yelled that at the tv while watching the movie! How does the Jewish woman not know about wigs when I just read an article a couple months ago about how big their culture is on wigs??!!

Ice Cube and Jonah Hill were in “22 Jump Street” together. Jonah was dating his daughter. It was hilarious. 😂 He could’ve definitely been the father in this as well. I thought Eddie was good though.
One thing I’m gonna do is laugh when watching TBTB 😂😂….Kevin and the Tities 😂😂😂😂… next thing Angel, ice cube would have been PERFECT, I’m seeing omgeeee that would have been GREAT!
I think the volume is low. My volume is all the way up on the laptop and UA-cam but it's still low until the commercials that are way too loud (no I don't have the premium so I sit through the commercials & that's my business lol)
Ok sooo, I hated the movie. I thought it was way too jam packed with cringy topical commetary. It all felt like a forced effort to combat Jewish vs Black's narratives since Mr. West's recent comments. Jonah Hill is always funny and was in his element. He obviously wrote everything for the Jewish family. The first half of the movie was made for him and he was definitely the main character of the movie. Lauren London's character and the black family did not receive the same care. But, I never really like Kenya Barris' portrayals of black families. Still always feels like a non-black person's idea of us. There was a missed opportunity to develop the black family. I didn't feel connected to them, at all. I didn't like how the black Muslim family was only shown as hateful, antisemitic, and with conspiracy theorist/hotep beliefs. It would have been nice to see them in their element without always being pitted against the Jewish family. Obviously no Muslims were in the writing room. Eddie's character was obviously the big close-minded bad guy and the Jewish mom was just well meaning, but misguided. I just couldn't get past a lot of this (and more) and it completely took me out of the movie. Plus we've seen this Meet the Parents/Guess Who's Coming to Dinner film too many times and this was lack luster addition.
there are a lot of hotep and conspiracy theorist beliefs in the black american muslim community. if “muslims” in the writing room means painting an untrue picture then i’m glad there weren’t any. muslims in america (non black) are very different than BA muslims. the BA muslims i’ve met have always been hotep, and very anti semetic. hell many BA christians are anti semetic. it’s not an untrue portrayal it’s just a negative one, which makes us uncomfortable. i know people are gonna cry racism and islamophobia at this movie. but honestly until many ppl have different experiences with BA, esp black male, muslims, then that’s going to be the general narrative shown. just my opinion though
Melissa looks miserable like she is forcing herself to be a part of the show. I'm mean it could be that she is tired...I know she has mentioned before that if she didn't have to do vlogs and such that she wouldn't... All in all it was a decent watch.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is solid, she is a comedy legend in her own right. Seinfeld is an acquired taste but she does shine on there.
are y'all going to do MAFS this season
They don't do those reviews anymore
Ice Cube and Jonah Hill were in “22 Jump Street” together. Jonah was dating his daughter. It was hilarious. 😂 He could’ve definitely been the father in this as well. I thought Eddie was good though.
I'm glad Lauren is gettin this traction after what she's been thru....but this was a stereotypical story we've seen b4 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
One thing I’m gonna do is laugh when watching TBTB 😂😂….Kevin and the Tities 😂😂😂😂… next thing Angel, ice cube would have been PERFECT, I’m seeing omgeeee that would have been GREAT!
I was crying!!!! 😂😂😂😂
I think the volume is low. My volume is all the way up on the laptop and UA-cam but it's still low until the commercials that are way too loud (no I don't have the premium so I sit through the commercials & that's my business lol)
Julia is hilarious. Never watched Seinfeld but her in New adventures of old Christine and Veep is top tier.
Yes!!
You explained this so well. Almost exactly my thoughts too
Melissa looks miserable like she is forcing herself to be a part of the show. I'm mean it could be that she is tired...I know she has mentioned before that if she didn't have to do vlogs and such that she wouldn't... However when I watch her on Gin n Juice...I get a completely different vibe from, one that says she's enjoying the moment. I could be completely wrong but, when I look at her face and demeanor compared to everyone else, she looks miserable.
I went to the naacp awards site and I didn't see Kevin's name
If you go to his bio and click the link it will take you directly to vote
I agree with this being a good movie for a plane. I actually watched it while on a flight and I think that helped a lot. I'm not sure I would have liked it as much if not on a plane
Melissa does not look interested in this show anymore, it is showing all over her face and body language each show. Maybe it is just too many personalities.
Everything TBTB said.... anddd the soundtrack was 🔥!
I'm half way done with the movie, I can't, I keep cringing. And stopping. Sad
I wish I had Melissa's appetite and food control. Three bites and she's good 😁😁
I loved the movie. I didn't find the purpose for the Sam Jay character. She wasn't funny to me.
