You learn very early that he was never actually that strong with magic because his mana pool is extremely small. But he knows all the spells and how to use them, even if he can't use them himself. However where he is the strongest is his knowledge and his ability to compleyely nullify all magic from being cast. Which catches all mages off guard and leaves them wide open for him to kill them with normal non magic means.
