- Henning Baer is now a permanent fixture in Berlin techno, as a founding member of the Grounded Theory collective and here speaks of how his studio facilitates his creativity in the latest 'Tech Talk' on Telekom Electronic Beats TV. Whether it’s using his Elektron Octatrack as a hub to synchronise his gear, or deploying his E-RM Multiclock for linking up his midi elements, Baer shows how a “flexible and tight” producing environment removes the barriers to creativity.

There is something very satisfying about seeing someone else's setup and production approach.
especially when it´s somenone well spoken and knowleged like Henning.
Tremendously satisfying. I can't quite explain why these videos are so fun and useful, but I hang on every one.
Sehr aufgeräumter Typ. Sowohl im Kopf als auch im Studio. Hat auf jeden Fall einen Plan von dem was er macht und dem was er machen möchte. Mit Ihm würde ich gerne mal jammen. Sehr sympathisch.
exactly true story for many producers, same with me at my studio...your studio and your musical passion never ends learning and be better, the pleasure for an artist is "search-learn-creative-practice-inspiration-motivation...and be happy :-) "
it's really impressive to see artists embraced with so many "tools" and doing so well with that! i see my self stick with just Ableton, APC40, a mic. and i´m complete =)
the very first words are so on point
really nice to see how Henning's workflow looks like on a regular day in the studio. I actually learned more things in this 6min video than in the last 6 years :D i also can relate to his words of learning how your equipment works, and i think this is really important - it is getting you closer to your own definition of sound. yes,it takes sometimes years to find all the interesting stuff your gear is capable of, but this is the most important - and most fun tbh - part of my studio routine too! thx to EB and HB for this nice feature, now i am off to my studio :)
Cool production you have dude, keep it up.. and really dope vinyl artworks, loving it :D
I danced to his music live in Berlin last month. :)
great setup and tasteful selection of gear... thanks for sharing!
great tips honestly.... the ergonomics is everything....
not everything but comfy :-)
stoked that the ms2000 is getting some recognition. i think mine sounds really good
so cool seeing his setup and hearing him explain how synth and machine placement is so important to his work flow.
A very refreshing and logical approach! Loving the sound!! 😎👍
Baer is one of my favorite up & coming (well in the U.S. atleast) artists. Reminds me of Blawan.. those dark beats get me 👍🏻
I like the setup, no reaching or stretching. Need to redo my studio and will take some cues here.
I love this guy! Class act all the way.
Great video
What a setup!
3:32 interesting to see his mouse technique; it looks quite wrong, but I used to do it the same way, resting on and moving the (angled) wrist...now my arm and wrist is pretty fucked after a long production and I developed some RSI syndrome. Gotta take care of a natural mouse position...
4:16 and thumbs up for the Roland JD-800 in the background, I love it, the best ambient/pad machine ever.
Mouse technique? Could be an interesting topic for the future :-)
rest the palm on tha mouse
nice sound nice guy nice studio
Dope studio and workflow!
Nice, I really enjoy the tonality of Henning's sound + processing. Raw and gritty in a refined, "extended" way. I was recently wondering what he used for distortion across his Shatterproof album (e.g. on Magnetic, Critical Distance), surprised he's mostly plugin-based. Also touché on not making more tool clones of Regis (as much as I love the Downwards catalog).
Some tricks have to stay secret... ;)
haha for sure. It's all part of the journey / self-discovery.
Crazy setup!
I give this channel a few months before they turn the comments section off like factmag did.
It's not so bad. Just a few trolls over the last weeks ;-)
@@ElectronicBeatsTV Keep the comms open so we can keep ya'll in check! :D It's all love though. The content is still solid.
MS 2000 for life!🎹🎧💫😵👌BrAp oN!!¡!👍✌
Geil!
I sold him my Urei 1178 and it’s still my biggest gear regret.
Very cool I have similar workflow. Would love to know how he deals with effects processing since that is so central to techno. Is he in the box for that as well? Is he multitrack recording or just a stereo from Midas? Is he running busses from Midas to an Audio interface. Also he could just get expert sleepers modules and add to his modular rig and just drive everything in perfect sync with ableton instead of this latency shifting he's talking bout
I use both. Hardware and software. I like the flexibility of software effect. (automations etc). Hardware effects I either use via send/return on the mixer or hard-patched to the respective instrument.
I track on the Midas and record via Direct-Out. Not just the stereo. Besides the direct-outs I run the 4 groups and 2 returns into my audio interface.
I would have same studio i would just change octatrack for mpc 2000xl or in his case 3000
I would have liked more detail on his use of the multi-clock. He's slaving Abelton to the Octatrack? Then switching to having Abelton as master?
Very cool studio and interesting discussion though!
No, Live is the master and the Multiclock gets its clock out of Live (via the plugin from E-RM)
Thanks for replying - so Live is always running, it's clock goes to the multiclock and everything else (octatrack etc) is getting midi from Live but you set delays on the multiclock to get everything in sync? Do you just set them by ear? Is the multiclock receiving a midi connection from Live or an audio signal (I know ERM make a box that receives midi via audio from the DAW, but not sure if that's the one you have?) ...... I can't stand timing issues so am looking for a way to fix them and curious about your solution - thanks again!
Yes same with my studio the master is Octatrack, samples and midi 🎶🎶🎶
Do you also integrate it with the computer in sync? I've been considering this workflow for a long while. Love my OT's but I really wanna start using the box more for processing. I just cant really be creative with the computer alone. Thanks
If you want integration like he has where the Octatrack plays the VST's in your DAW you really need the multiclock. You can fix latency in Ableton but it's kinda painful and always shifting with higher CPU loads. I have my Octa synced to my DAW but i only use it to play my external synths and record audio only. This helps keep latency down as I don't own a multiclock (for now lol).
drooling @ that Nvelope 500
wonderful tool!
damn crazy that he can make sounds outta that ms2000, i have one and i dunno what the fuck to do with it lolz
word!
It is such a versatile synth! U can do basically anything with it. Yet, like I said in the video, a very distinct sound...
thanks man thats great inspiration to use it.... I always thought its some outdated plasticy poor sounding synth... I have to get into it a lil deeper
I have one and love it. Just download the manual and give it a good read. It's well written and you'll be making sick patches in no time.
I recommend the version with the vocoder... :)
Wonderful setup - completely agree with ergonomics. The gear should move out of the way and let the music appear. Any idea how he runs the Midas into his computer? What interface/s?
Well, he mentioned UAD, so likely 32 channels of Apollo.
He said via analog direct outs of the Midas in to the interface.
You have an idea what model Midas mixer he's using?
Nice one!
Fire
Ah man...I thought the video was for Henning BEER...oh well. Still good info.
great, but too short :(
really like the ergonomics of your studio, what brand and model are those stands that you have your TR-808 and TR-909? do you find them sturdy enough or do they wiggle a bit? Thanks
thanks.
Nice! Please get Moomin do a Tech Talk!
hello I'm curious about your routing between the Octatrack , the erm multi clock , Ableton and your hardware; I would like to work with this type of set-up with an mpc live; thanks
Master 👌🏻!!!
Great video. Ableton 4 LIfE. Random but if some one can tell me what shirt he’s wearing that would be dope!
It's Komakino shirt... ;))
Very good ! Can you help me : what kind of a furniture is it ? racks?
Custom made
hello thanks for your video; very instructive and inspiring; i have a question ; how the cpu of Ableton is affected by the plug-in of the erm multiclock ; thanks;
it's not the erm that's loading the CPU but all the fx vsts
How is your DAW connected to the mixer? Do you use one channel for the DAW?
Void_official yes i would have the same question????
I think he is using Direct Outs in Midas Venice 24 (mixer), going to the soundcard(s) which are was not shown in the video. So: Analog Instrument -> MIXER IN -> MIXER DIRECT OUT -> SOUNDCARD IN -> ABLETON
Isnt that what interfaces are for 🤔
Loving the setup. But has anyone wondered: how could he afford it all? I love hearing how the guy "knows" what his vision of a perfect studio is. A lot of us do. However ... :)
probably just being in the game for a long time...buying and selling gear until you arrive at the studio that works for you. :)
You can have some nice stuff by your 30s/40s if you dont have kids or buy a car
These days when only 909 and 808 will cost you 20.000€ no
@@jovantrendmaker4722 more like 10.000 but yeah it's expensive. Just buy a clone.
Great studio. How are the 808 & 909 wired? Through a patchbay or straight into the mixer?
The first 6 chancels on the mixer are dedicated for the 808/909 and from there via direct-out into my soundcard (via a patchbay).
Thx :) If you don't mind I will copy the arrangement by having them left and right hand side from the screen using the stands (from Thomann I guess)
I am the same in my studio i have also octatrack but i buy the smaller midi clock and for me do not work properly and now i can not us it Octatrack with my gear because do not sync well :(
What means u cannot sync up the Octatrack well? I use the Multiclock to get my midi instruments in sync with the internal click of my DAW. U can shift all four channels of the Multiclock + and - and also apply shuffle.
I have E-RM MIDIclock+ and i can not sync my analog rhythm, analog four, octatrack and my DAW it is not stable and do not work for me !
I don't know the MIDIclock as I am using the Multiclock. U should write the guys from E-rm an email. They are very helpful!
Hows this working for you? Would you need a very powerful computer? And do you experience the clock change over time?
What about the monitor speakers? Also the sub...is this a good idea for monitoring?
The speakers are Neumann KH310. I do not see any problem with a subwoofer. It makes me actually control my lowend better and my speakers work less intense as the sub is taking big part of the work.
@@user2x2x64 Those speakers are the best ! Klein Hummel - I have small ones. I want to get 310's - do you suggest to have them?
mono out on the octatrack seems legit xD man I see so many artists covered in equipment and yet their output is crap (and yes I've listened through his own releases). They become knob fiddlers, ableton problem solvers, button pushers and gear heads so much that they lose focus on giving their music a soul. Having and building "a studio" seems as if it has become more important than the purpose of the "studio". I would highly recommend he stops swimming with the hype of being a self acclaimed "techno producer", sells 80% of his studio starting with the 808&909 and starts producing something truly unique instead of this generic "boomchicklookihavea909too" techno.
Waldo Wolf Wow you seem to know all the in’s & out’s so well!!? why don’t you try producing yourself instead of just disagreeing with others interpretations of techno...
totally agree. So much gear and so much techtalk and it's just deep booming 808 crap. I bet these synths never had been played a real melodie...
Waldo Wolf you are so right!!
Siodhachan hehe totally agree with you on what you say
All Heil to waldo wolf the techno prophet!
4:02 what is this song that comes in?!
It's likely a sample beat he setup on the xOx during the interview... but if it's not, I'd really like to know too!
Henning Baer - Never Ending [MANHIGH005]
Gundam!
Track Id 1:51 anyone ?
i understand all this talk about generic sound and people complaining. will check his stuff but I do believe the guy knows his stuff. at the end of the day our imagination and ideas bring us to an end result we rarely foresee at the beginning of a session. but for the drums, it looks like he has a vermona drm hidden and collecting dust under the ms2000 which is an amazing machine. not so straightforward to use as 9 or 8 but a damn beast of a sound variation and creativity... maybe switch to that from time to time. the roland drums have been overused by now if you ask me..
DRM MKIII is an endless Soundpool, great machine in my opinion
Anyone know the name of the closing track?
:-)..it's Never Ending (MANHIGH005) manhighrecordingsbln.bandcamp.com/album/henning-baer-shatterproof-manhigh005
@@soyobeat a scholar and a gentleman!
With al that recording... 44100 or 48000 sample rate?
44.1 would be surprising
i think 44.1 is doing the job just fine if the recording is doing properly.
44.1 is fine.
I record in 48000 but 44100 is enough tho...
44100 is fine generally, but if you want a bit higher, go 88200 (better conversion down to 44.1 than from 48). The most ideal would be 60000. 48000 is used mostly for home DVD releases.
How do these guys afford that kind of studio?
The going guess among the naysayers is "trust fund". But it doesn't serve one to be so judgmental. Dude set up a nice space & didn't wear shades during the interview. So I reckon he is a nice guy.
you save your money! no dinners out. no fancy shoes. no hockey games. no credit card. no kids. no motorcycle. no girlfriend(or a geeky one). pabst blue ribbon.
starting from scratch with one thing, have some success, then keep on truckin all the way down. and maybe not giving a fuck about cheap stuff too?
I would have a studio like this, if I wasnt into cars 🤦🏻♂️ I try to balance both.
Save.
What's the brand name of 500 series lunchbox?
API
No, looks like WesAudio
What ADDA converter do you use?
I have 2 SSL Alpha-Link MX cascaded.
Anyone can drop an ID on that t shirt?
I like techno, and I like minimal, but his music is so flat, and uninteresting. Every track might as well just be a looping sequence. But i like this channel, as there is good content.
who do you prefer out of interest? a friend of mine likes baer a lot but have never sat down and taken time to check him out
Well this type of techno is all about a good looping sequence and subtle/progressive changes, that's the whole point.
listen to fierce hundred, yes it's looping it's fucking techno but the way he chews apart the audio progressively is sublime
Track id? 4:02-end
himself - never ending
Badman.
OMFG, did any one noticed the sub at 1:49 :D
I think the guy gets a free soft balls massage from it :DDD
Yep. Very gentle massage...
it's called humor ....don't you get it ?
I really respect Henning and love what it does ......with free ball's massage :D
@@Pl4sm0 that's henning's account you responded to...
5:45 - 6:10 still his tracks sound like every other boring modern minimal techno. Not a fan. and also 4:21 - 4:29 come oooon
Real Techno will always be a tool for the dance club. Good luck trying to change that.
It will, but it does not have to be. I listen to allot of techno outside the clubs, which really gives me an insight into the experimental world of production. Sure, techno is and will always be a tool for the dance clubs. But I think there is more to it, like in any other genre.
@@stacybigfoot4801 dude I was having a heated conversation about what "real techno" means just the other day. Who the fuck is "real techno"??? This shit is perplexing me for reals.
Wtf is Real techno 🧐 😂
Luckily you don’t know what techno is.
What mixer is it?
the desk is an old midas 24, you wont find it new anymore so need to look 2nd hand or at their other range which are also very nice - he also has a small boss km6o which are very cool if you like saturation
4 on the floor, wash rinse repeat.
All that amazing gear for one fruity loops bass drum and bass loop. Musical Genius.
you have no clue dude ; )
well, he's the one getting videos made about him and you're the one leaving snide comments on UA-cam ... you must be a lot better!
Yea your Playlists looks like a bunch of Trash... you definately know what your talking about 😂
ich kann das gelaber nicht mehr hören !
seit dekaden immer der gleiche tenor.
was mich aber richtig ärgert, dass im hintergrund 2 belanglose „loops“ laufen - als representation was machbar ist ?
SNORE
You just need a laptop and creativity
🤔
The only people that ever say this wish they could afford some real gear. While you're technically not wrong, even a few modest hardware pieces can really make the production process a lot more engaging and just more fun overall. And don't get it twisted, hardware does sound miles better than plugins in most cases, especially fully analog outboard gear and synths.
I wouldn't say u "just" need a laptop and creativity but I can certainly be enough...
You can make a great track with "laptop and creativity", but you won't get anything as unique sounding. Music has a way of conveying effort put into crafting the sound (just like any other form of art)..There is a discipline in getting to a desired outcome. Having loads of fx in daw waiting to be dragged and dropped can make your work flow too easy, and too banal. Aphex Twin's ironically titled Pretend Analog Extmix 2b track, although being made *almost completely in DAW, was mixed externally using a hardware chorus type effect. That's like admitting, "yeah, you can make a great track with laptop, but it will sound like ***t if you don't run it through some hardware".
Music is not just which notes are played, but also how these notes are sounding. A MIDI piano library sounds different than a Steinway Grand piano, obviously, just like a plugin sounds different than a Juno-60.
nothing special
xCrysTaL RaiN yup. Seriously boring music. Just a lot of money.
So many machines to do horrible shit.
