  • Henning Baer is now a permanent fixture in Berlin techno, as a founding member of the Grounded Theory collective and here speaks of how his studio facilitates his creativity in the latest 'Tech Talk' on Telekom Electronic Beats TV. Whether it’s using his Elektron Octatrack as a hub to synchronise his gear, or deploying his E-RM Multiclock for linking up his midi elements, Baer shows how a “flexible and tight” producing environment removes the barriers to creativity.

    really nice to see how Henning's workflow looks like on a regular day in the studio. I actually learned more things in this 6min video than in the last 6 years :D i also can relate to his words of learning how your equipment works,and i think this is really important - it is getting you closer to your own definition of sound. yes,it takes sometimes years to find all the interesting stuff your gear is capable of, but this is the most important - and most fun tbh - part of my studio routine too! thx to EB and HB for this nice feature, now i am off to my studio :)

    3:32 interesting to see his mouse technique; it looks quite wrong, but I used to do it the same way, resting on and moving the (angled) wrist...now my arm and wrist is pretty fucked after a long production and I developed some RSI syndrome. Gotta take care of a natural mouse position...

    Nice, I really enjoy the tonality of Henning's sound + processing. Raw and gritty in a refined, "extended" way. I was recently wondering what he used for distortion across his Shatterproof album (e.g. on Magnetic, Critical Distance), surprised he's mostly plugin-based. Also touché on not making more tool clones of Regis (as much as I love the Downwards catalog).

    Very cool I have similar workflow. Would love to know how he deals with effects processing since that is so central to techno. Is he in the box for that as well? Is he multitrack recording or just a stereo from Midas? Is he running busses from Midas to an Audio interface. Also he could just get expert sleepers modules and add to his modular rig and just drive everything in perfect sync with ableton instead of this latency shifting he's talking bout

    • @user2x2x64
      @user2x2x64 6 років тому +2

      I use both. Hardware and software. I like the flexibility of software effect. (automations etc). Hardware effects I either use via send/return on the mixer or hard-patched to the respective instrument.
      I track on the Midas and record via Direct-Out. Not just the stereo. Besides the direct-outs I run the 4 groups and 2 returns into my audio interface.

      Do you also integrate it with the computer in sync? I've been considering this workflow for a long while. Love my OT's but I really wanna start using the box more for processing. I just cant really be creative with the computer alone. Thanks

    • @ChristopherYabsley
      @ChristopherYabsley 6 років тому +1

      If you want integration like he has where the Octatrack plays the VST's in your DAW you really need the multiclock. You can fix latency in Ableton but it's kinda painful and always shifting with higher CPU loads. I have my Octa synced to my DAW but i only use it to play my external synths and record audio only. This helps keep latency down as I don't own a multiclock (for now lol).

    • @rekindle
      @rekindle 6 років тому

      Thanks for replying - so Live is always running, it's clock goes to the multiclock and everything else (octatrack etc) is getting midi from Live but you set delays on the multiclock to get everything in sync? Do you just set them by ear? Is the multiclock receiving a midi connection from Live or an audio signal (I know ERM make a box that receives midi via audio from the DAW, but not sure if that's the one you have?) ...... I can't stand timing issues so am looking for a way to fix them and curious about your solution - thanks again!

    So what benefits does a mostly analogue setup like that provide besides the harmonic distortion(the "warm" sound) and workflow? if nothing then im happy and will not buy any myself besides hardware synths. any help would be appareciated, thankyou.

    • @mb2776
      @mb2776 4 роки тому +4

      Actually, some of his stuff is digital, like the korg ms2000 and the dx7 he uses.
      One of the best argument for having hardware is what he said in the video, the quality of the sound. With most good and proven hardware synths like model d, juno, jupiter, microwave, 808, 909 etc. the output of the device is allready really good soundwise. Sometimes, u can use it right away without much processing or just a little bit of eq and compressor.
      Also,direct hands on control is a big big plus!!

    • @Sk8erMorris
      @Sk8erMorris 4 роки тому +2

      I think it's all just preference, bc both digital or analog both have great sounds, what you as a creator likes when it comes workflow too

    • @TomKaosOfficial
      @TomKaosOfficial 4 роки тому +1

      Its a lot easier Creating on hardware in front of you rather than dealing and clicking through plugins and every single knob... which is what I find annoying. Then yes, the actual sound quality aspect is definately there.

    • @Labyrinth1010
      @Labyrinth1010 4 роки тому +3

      I will say this: I've owned hardware for years (analogue and digital synths, drum machines, and sequencers). In the fall I sold some of it off and invested in updating and purchasing new software instruments (U-He, Arturia, Softtube, NI, Serum and a bunch of others). I wanted to see if I could write tracks in the box that I was happy with. I did and they sound great. But after a few months I went back to hardware and must say, software synth do not, in my opinion, match the sound of actual Voltage Controlled Oscillators. They just don't. There is a depth, width, and roundness that my synths give me that's beyond software. And it's not even that subtle. It's quite noticeable. Does it matter? Probably not. A good track that's well mixed is the bottom line and how you get there is irrelevant. But one other advantage to hardware is the fast it's way, way more fun to play with. Sculpting sounds on an actual piece of gear versus a midi controller or mouse/trackball is a completely different experience that invites a certain type of experimentation that's unique. So on top of it sounding better, it inspires different (in my opinion, better) sounds and ideas.

    • @dorsia6938
      @dorsia6938 3 роки тому

      @@Labyrinth1010 you can definitely make software synths sound very close to analogue, to the point where once everything is in the mix you can't really tell. Give it another few years and there will be soft synths that sound indistinguishable, the gap is closing and fast. Main advantage of hardware is workflow.

      The going guess among the naysayers is "trust fund". But it doesn't serve one to be so judgmental. Dude set up a nice space & didn't wear shades during the interview. So I reckon he is a nice guy.

    mono out on the octatrack seems legit xD man I see so many artists covered in equipment and yet their output is crap (and yes I've listened through his own releases). They become knob fiddlers, ableton problem solvers, button pushers and gear heads so much that they lose focus on giving their music a soul. Having and building "a studio" seems as if it has become more important than the purpose of the "studio". I would highly recommend he stops swimming with the hype of being a self acclaimed "techno producer", sells 80% of his studio starting with the 808&909 and starts producing something truly unique instead of this generic "boomchicklookihavea909too" techno.

      It will, but it does not have to be. I listen to allot of techno outside the clubs, which really gives me an insight into the experimental world of production. Sure, techno is and will always be a tool for the dance clubs. But I think there is more to it, like in any other genre.

      The only people that ever say this wish they could afford some real gear. While you're technically not wrong, even a few modest hardware pieces can really make the production process a lot more engaging and just more fun overall. And don't get it twisted, hardware does sound miles better than plugins in most cases, especially fully analog outboard gear and synths.

    • @user2x2x64

    • @stjepan_8902
      @stjepan_8902 6 років тому

      You can make a great track with "laptop and creativity", but you won't get anything as unique sounding. Music has a way of conveying effort put into crafting the sound (just like any other form of art)..There is a discipline in getting to a desired outcome. Having loads of fx in daw waiting to be dragged and dropped can make your work flow too easy, and too banal. Aphex Twin's ironically titled Pretend Analog Extmix 2b track, although being made *almost completely in DAW, was mixed externally using a hardware chorus type effect. That's like admitting, "yeah, you can make a great track with laptop, but it will sound like ***t if you don't run it through some hardware".

    • @timmbrockmann959
      @timmbrockmann959 6 років тому

      Music is not just which notes are played, but also how these notes are sounding. A MIDI piano library sounds different than a Steinway Grand piano, obviously, just like a plugin sounds different than a Juno-60.
