I got in with a 3.07 cGPA & 2.72 sGPA without a masters or postbac. I HIGHLY recommend applying the first day the app opens. Try to complete everything during the “soft opening” - have your LOR, transcripts and DAT scores in by then. The earlier you submit, the better chances you have.
Just got into 2 schools and my GPA was significantly lower than their average acceptance. My biggest advice would be to take a hard look at the application and come up with MEANINGFUL experiences for everything they will ask about: volunteering, dental experience/shadowing, research, extracurriculars, working. Having quality stories and experiences goes farther than the number of things you did. You need to come across as unique on paper and not just another bio major ESPECIALLY if your GPA/DAT scores are below their average. Good luck everyone!
thats good advice. I do think it's important to note that all of these things are case by case basis, but you need to be a very strong applicant (this includes things like extracurriculars, shadowing etc.) at the end of the day, an average is an average. there are people who are above it, and there are people below it. Averages hardly mean anything, they're just a measure that half of these school don't report accurately anyway. The best way to go about it is the way you said, but there are some people who will need to show that they are capable in the classroom. Once you get to school you'll see how hard it is to handle the classroom, and if you don't have a strong classroom showing from the past, schools will be hesitant about you as a student. Good luck next year!
side note, there are definitely many ways to get in! many more than I mentioned and more than you mentioned as well. These are all just things that may have worked for me, and may have worked for you, but i'm sure somewhere along the lines someone else made it work a different way. your comment is appreciated! all the advice goes a long way!
Thank you , my GPA is a 3.6, sGPA 3.7 but I have like 7 Ws on my transcripts due to medical issues in the past . And 3 of them due to the pandemic . I’ll be applying next cycle so I hope I get in 😩
as long as you can explain the Ws, and there is valid reasoning, you should be fine! You have a strong GPA, and in your personal statement you can address those Ws and explain how those medical issues affected your education and you still fought hard and persevered to get to the point of applying to school! I believe in you.
Thank you for this video! I will be submitting applications this coming cycle and have been self doubting whether I'll get accepted anywhere at all. Most applications I've seen emphasized that they go through a holistic process, so that makes me feel a little better about applying. Everyone is more than just their grades! Everyone has a story to tell. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
I know this is about dental school but this is the motivation i need thank you!!! I am going to apply to a straight to phd program and my gpa is not at all good. I am trying to re take classes on classes i didnt do so good and secure internships! Congratulations!!!
Hey! Thank you and I'm glad I could be a source of inspiration/motivation! That's what I'm doing it for! I wish you the best of luck and I know you can do it! DONT GIVE UP!
This really helped me. I emailed Meharry to see if a math class I took would be accepted and decided to tell them my stats just to see where my standing is and how I can look better and they told me that I’m not competitive right now & that’s not what I need😭😭😭💔 so thank you
thankkk youuu I got my first C as a freshman in bio 2! and I literally cried because I studied sooo much and I am terrible at science. the professor made no sense and gave us 5 exams through the semester and about 4 assignments and I am literally bad at test taking the only reason I do good is homework and he gave us almost nothing.
I have a science gpa of 2.6 and over all gpa 3.1. My cpuncilor tpld me tpday im not competitice and even experiences or extra stuff cant help me. And was shocked im taking DAT from not having a good foundation
lol. good thing advisors don't make the law! i had the same science GPA and a lower overall coming out of undergrad. I took the DAT once! But I did do a post-bacc
Hey, I came across this video. It gave me hope. Did you complete all of your science courses to apply. Would you recommend me talking all the basic required science courses to apply to dental school?
hey! well you must complete all of the pre-requisites before you START dental school, but you can apply before you finish all of them! You just indicate on your application that the courses are "in progress". hope this helps!!
no i didn't! i mention that in my video about paying for dental school as well.. it was the smartest financial decision but, can't get in everywhere 😔. i wanted to leave MD anyway, I've spent my entire life in Maryland just about. UMD wasn't my top choice but it was high on my list because of how smart it would've been financially.
@@KI-wz7pr Sorry about that. I try to avoid repeating information too often that is in other videos. I took my DAT in October 2019 and applied in June 2020, about 1 week after applications were able to be submitted.
Do you recommend on taking physics? since I can take 9 out of 12 requirements physics was one and I had other options but I don't know should I take it?
some schools still require it as a pre-requisite so I would either take it to be safe or make sure every school you want to apply to doesn't require it.
Do you think what major you choose affects your chances of getting in. I know biology is very popular for undergrad. I just don’t want to be another “bio” major ..

we love a testimony!
Thats awesome, congrats!! If you don't mind sharing, what school did you get into?
Congratulations!!! What schools did you apply to?
I’m a D1 at UMSOD

honestly surprised Meharry e-mailed someone back 💀💀 it's always hard to get in touch with them. but don't lose hope!
Thank you for breaking this down for other applicants like myself.

Thanks cuz. I was thinking about getting smiles direct to close my gap but now I’m going to take your advice and get Invisalign.
good choice cuz! how'd you find the video?!
Thank you.
Congratulations brotha! Shout out G2 family
my guy!!
Thanks for your inspiring video brother! Best wish in dental school :)
Thank you so much! You’re awesome! First time on your channel!
thank you!!
Awesome! Great advice!!!!
thank you!
Quality video. I got a 2.9 as well haha
lol I know plenty IZ bros with that exact one😂

Oh i see. I may have to do that to then. How was that? What do you do in post bacc?
People say its a waste of money
Your grades do not define your intelligence, kinda screwed that he said that

@@StudentDoctorEli I feel that, I didnt see how early u applied in the video do you mind sharing that and when you took your DAT

😂😂😂seems many of us low gpa people are looking for a way to get in
and there is a way!

Congrats! Did you apply after completing the post-bacc?
thank you? yes i applied after, but a majority of the dental students applied and were accepted during!! i wish i wouldve applied during instead
thank you!**
My undergrad GPA is 2.66. Do I still have a chance to get in if my DAT score is over 22?
That's not easy to answer. There's plenty more to your application than a GPA & DAT
I went to UMD as well. Gen Chem 2 Lab is noooo joke
not at all! i barely made it out the first time
@@StudentDoctorEli i plan to take it this summer and I think the acid-base equilibria is just hard af hahahahah
it definitely isnt the easiest thing to grasp, but taking it over the summer is so much better when you have nothing else to focus on
@@StudentDoctorEli Agree brother!
What was your science gpa of you don’t mind me asking?
i dont remember, sorry. it was lower than my overall gpa though
Bro Howard scores that low?
i'm just telling ya'll what the official stats are in the ADEA Dental School Explorer
@@StudentDoctorEli at the end of the day as long as the dentist it makes are great that’s all that matters.
and they are. my cousin is a Howard trained dentist. Howard was one of my top choices, the stats don't matter
Do you think what major you choose affects your chances of getting in. I know biology is very popular for undergrad. I just don’t want to be another “bio” major ..
no i don't
America Dental Association Program says it doesn't matter at all as long as you hit all the pre-denral pre-recs. They accept any and all majors.
