  • William Boyce (baptised 11 September 1711 - 7 February 1779) was an English composer and organist. Like Beethoven later on, he became deaf but continued to compose. He knew Handel, Arne, Gluck, Bach, Abel, and a very young Mozart, all of whom respected his work.
As Master of the King's Musick Boyce had the responsibility of writing music for royal occasions including funerals, weddings and coronations. He, however, refused to make a new setting of Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George III and Charlotte in 1761 on the grounds that Handel's setting of the anthem was unsurpassable - as a consequence of which Handel's setting has been played at every subsequent British coronation.
Boyce was largely forgotten after his death and he remains a little-performed composer today, although a number of his pieces were rediscovered in the 1930s and Constant Lambert edited and sometimes conducted his works. Lambert had already launched the early stages of the modern Boyce revival in 1928, when he published the first modern edition of the Eight Symphonies (Bartlett and Bruce 2001).

oh this is LOVELY! I have been sharing Zevnikov's music uploads with friends all over the world, and not just because I'm half Croatian on my late WW2 Army dad's side (100%). Puno ti hvala! Živjeli! I praise Lord Jesus Christ for this gorgeous music! (Resphigi's PINES OF ROME is my favorite! as well as Dvorak's 9th of course as I'm a military mom)

A lovely and bright piece of music and a lovely and bright performance by Slovenska filharmonija. It is a shame that Billy Boyce was almost forgotten and his music left to gather dust on dusty shelves. He was, perhaps, born at the wrong time living under the shadow of Georgi Handel, the shadow of Georgi making Billy almost invisible. Georgi composed the coronation anthem, "Zadok the Priest" for the coronation of George II in 1727 and Billy was asked to do a new "Zadok the Priest" for the coronation of George III in 1761 (two years after Georgi's death) but Billy said he would not as Georgi's piece was "unsurpassable". He did, however write a new coronation anthem, as Georgi had done, called, "The King Shall Rejoice", the text taken from Psalm 21. Both Georgi's "Zadok The Priest" and Billy's "The King Shall Rejoice" were played at George IIIs coronation. Here it is at Charlie's coronation earlier this year (2023) ua-cam.com/video/PFAuT9A57P4/v-deo.html I think that he did it because it was required of him. He had been appointed "Master of the King's Musick" in 1757 and he had to come up with something but I don't think his heart was in it and it is not as good as Georgi's one .... Billy's other works are much better as we hear with this rendition of his 2nd Symphony.
Billy died aged 67 from "an attack of gout". Far too much Port wine and far too much red meat.
