Burn barrels are very useful for shrub and tree trimmings. We burn our brush in one. We dump it after each burn though so ours last forever pretty much.
Yeah, if I was just burning brush in mine I probably would dump them too. We burn all kinds of trash in them so I usually just load them up once they fill up and get rid of them.
I've been using 50 gallon drums for burn barrels for more than 60 years. What is the nonsense in attempting to make the process appear to be technical. Cut, drill, chisel holes into the side and a few on the bottom. Add a grill toward the bottom if so inclined. Toss in some firewood, some kindling, kerosene/gas/lighter fluid--strike a match. Done.
Well, yes. But some have never done that. Some people are grown and don't know what a lug nut is. I was asked about it, so why not? Anytime those that do know can help those that don't, ...
If you have been doing it for 60 years, at minimum you are 75 years old. That means you started using burn barrels when you were 15. But anyways, what was so technical about this ? I guess for someone your age this is very technical. I'm honestly surprised you could figure out how to post a comment on the world wide web. You probably still use those free AOL CDs to get on the interwebs with your phone line dial up connection. Unfortunately, you probably have no idea how to see comment replies, so I will never hear from you.
Yep. I use either a .45 cal 'hole punch' or I bet a 12 ga. slug would make some nice, and quick, vent holes. The 45 is how I put drain holes in my trash cans. Probably a good thing I live in the country!
In the center of the lid, take a hammer and give it a good even blow for a low spot dead center. Take a half inch drill bit or other or other size, and you have an instant drain hole. It will drain through the top into the bottom and out them drain holes. You should have lid vent holes.
Awesome video. I know the options are endless but what if you hammered those tabs inward on the lid instead of outward? Would that work about the same and have less sharp edges on the outside?
I would say $10 was normal for these type of barrels, but lately everything has went way up in price. Thanks Joe. If you find some for $10 now that's probably a great price.
I would think you would be ok, but do it at your own risk. Oil takes a lot to burn and it's not explosive. Gas or something explosive though would be very bad.
Before you do this, make damn sure the old contents of the drum were not flammable. Vapors can be just as explosive as the former contents, and guys have gotten killed cutting into "empty" drums that exploded. I was just reading about a guy in Pennsylvania who got killed by a burn barrel last week. And I know of another incident in Iowa that killed a man who was welding on top of a barrel, using it as a workbench. Filling the drum with water before cutting into it can displace explosive vapors, if done correctly.
We have just always filled them with water if we think they are flammable or explosive. Some also shoot holes in them before cutting them. Maybe do both just to be sure.
Yes definitely be sure and clean up the rough edges... You don't want any kids to get cut while they're playing around the..... Burn barrel 🤔😆... Sorry I couldn't help myself lol
You can usually find these type of 55 gallon barrels on Craigslist or Marketplace. You can never have too many cutting blades: amzn.to/33QizBX
Thank you so much! I had no idea how to make a lid.

Where you dump it?
Thank you ❤ this helped me and my grandma a lot
Glad it helped! Thanks.
Really good step by step video. You make it look pretty easy. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! That was the plan.

Why is a guy in the comments youtubing how to work a burn barrel if he’s been doing it correctly for 60 years?

I use a 9mm to put the holes in. Much more fun.

12 00 buck is the best imho
Great instructional video!! Was very helpful! Thank you!

You could but it would not sit as well over the top.
The earth gave you a rock? How generous!
It sure did! Lots of them. But these were not free sadly. I hear you have a few it gave you too.
Great video. I want to make one now. I found a lot for sale on Craigslist, but not any for free. Is $10 normal for one of these?

Good job
Thank you. We make these a lot for trash/brush burning. Glad you liked it.
Always take the caps off!
Any special reason?
Engine oil barrels should be ok right won’t light up lol? Just got one laying around

@@SeidelRanch thanks buddy much appreciated

@@SeidelRanch 👍🏻👍🏻
Can i lock it?
Lock it? What part would you lock? Like lock the lid down?
wouldn't small holes drilled into the top help airflow?
It can. It's all based on what you want it to do.

Well, you know these days. There is a reason they have to put the label that says don't drink the battery acid.
He said bunghole huh huh huh
Don't put your fingers in it.
First thing that came to my mind 😂
Duh, bungholes existed before there was a nasty meaning attached.
I want. Scrop Drum cutting. Machine
A machine to do this would be cool.
First time you fire that barrel it will warp and the lid won't fit.
I have done many like this and have not had an issue. I wonder why yours warp so bad. Maybe thinner gauge barrels?
Why can't you put it on its side with opening on top fill it full of water till water comes out. That would cut down the sound.
You could do that. It would probably make it a little safer at the same time.
If you angle the lid water will drip off
That is a good point. Thanks.
@@SeidelRanch I'm about to make my new burn Barrel in few hours, will punch holes with 10mm Glock it's little bit faster that way 🤣
@@littlebitofeverything652 That's the best way to make them. Be safe and enjoy.
