fun fact about dark type
despite being released as a Special type, every single Dark-type move released until Gen 3 became physical in the split
A key change to the Dark type was the immunity to Prankster. One thing that it could do is force Sableye to immediately Mega evolve instead of trying to use Prankster for a turn or two.

One of the things I've always loved about the dark typing is the fact that all dark type moves have secondary effects.
Wait… WAIT? Edit: the only move I found without a secondary effect of some kind is brutal swing and that’s just a psychical dark spread move
@@Reliztik82depends on if you wanna consider hitting multiple spots an effect or not. Because plenty of moves just dont do that.
@@TedjiroKamado that’s what I was implying. I apologize if I wasn’t clear. I agree with you
It's funny how Dark and Ghost get cool trends like "secondary effects in all but brutal swing" and "100% accuracy on every move but Poltergeist" while Rock has "horrendous accuracy" and Steel has "every move above 90 basepower needs a major drawback (unless your name is Zacian)"
Basically, dirty/underhanded fighting.
The conversion of Bite into a Dark-type move was also a changer for those who have access to it. This gave early route Normal mons like Rattata a convenient move that not only has a convenient effect, but also a reliable move aganist those who would normally resist their Normal moves (Ghost, Rock, and Steel types from Gen6 onwards)
And, they still have Hyper Fang to look forward to! 😊
By creating Tyranitar. As simple as that.
This is balanced by the fact that dark eventually gave us kingambit lame ass with base 100+ sucker punches
@@stumie1699Kingambit wasn’t sugercoating it with those sucker punch. 😏
Pursuit 😂
Bruh Ttar getting its adv crown taken by skarmary
7:57 The Weavile frozen in time getting obliterated by Bullet Punch is so funny 😂
The removal of pursuit is to this day one of the most controversial decision byy Gamefreak. In gen 8 and 9, ghost types have been broken beyond belief. Give Ttar a pursuit like move that olis super effective against ghost and aee this world burn.
Removing pursuit while keeping scald is really cringey but I’m glad they basically removed it from the game as well
But it hurt psychics a lot, a already weaker typing
Pursuit Is broken. It punishes swithching, More oprresing than steath rock in my opinion
@@rupert0lp887 Not nearly as bad as rocks. Pursuit's meager 40 BP if it didn't trap something meant there was counterplay. You could just stay in and absorb the hit, then predict if they go for some other move and switch on that.
Rocks means you have to run boots if you're rock weak, or stack the deck with hazard removal. Which is incredibly limiting on team composition.
@@trevorwendt6274 the thing Is, stealth rock can damage UP to 50 percent , pursuit can outright kill a Mon just for trying to switch. Plus, to avoid rocks, we habe boots Now, there Is no counterplay to pursuit. Eject button + pursuit can kill a mon
4:36 you forgot the young Shifrty :( also being dark and grass thus being also immuned to celebi leech seed and psychic. ! Great episode nontheless !!
Tbf, when comparing Shiftry to Cactern in Gen 3, Shiftry is the kid you begrudgingly take as the final pick on a group project. I absolutely love Shiftry, it's my favorite Hoenn Pokemon, but I'm not picking it for an RSE OU team with Cactern having a built in Double Team that makes everything hit as often as a hydro pump
@@grantdaily9662I dont even remember Shiftry's ability. Was it early bird?
@@leeeroyjenkins555 chlorophyll, which sucks in Gens 3-4 since there's no reliable Sun Setter since Sunny Day was the only way outside of Groudons' Drought.
@@grantdaily9662 i mean i ve never played gen 3 ou but isnt explosion like the best move there? and shiftry explosion looks nice. 252+ Atk Choice Band Shiftry Explosion vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 345-407 (85.6 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
@@razorshell3049 Explosion is great, on other Pokemon. Shiftry has it for any neutral match up, but even in the Boom Game it's out classes by other mons that don't need to us the Boom.
It’s nice to reminisce about king ttar. Sad to see it slowly get worse and worse in the later gens. Still one of my top 3 Pokémon.
I think one thing so many people miss is that every type has a „gimmick“. Nur usally it’s not universal it’s just mostly like I’ve freezing or fire burning. dark always does something. There is no offensive dark move without secondary effect and that alone makes having stab dark incredible valuable
Dark’s gimmick is not fighting fair/disruption.
Spelling
@@torterra1826 you understand it anyways right?
Never thought of that but it's very true
Nothing more satisfying than using dark pulse for the flinch chance and getting it, or using crunch and getting the defense drop
@@inkognito3145 yes
This is Darkrai erasure, the most feared Dark type in Generations 4-6
Dark and steel had multiple goals: nerf psychics, buff fighting, nerf normal and buff fire
It’s gotten to a point where in team building I have a ground slot and a dark slot, regardless of what type of team I’m making. The amount of times I put a Gambit in that slot ‘just because’ is getting alarming.
I feel like than more than the type itself, what make the dark type and dark types so important is not as much the sheer advantages of the type, but the utility of the dark type moveset and in the most recent years, the incredible strengh of the new dark mons (and of cours t-tar before that).
Would love to see you break down each Type and their Impact/History on the different metagames
Dark types have my favorite aesthetic and seeing them be so good in gen 9 is very based.
Dark types have been a favorite since release!
Dark & Fairy should be super effective against each other
I second this. I don't mind Dark having another weakness but I do mind Fairy having the most rare types as its weakness. No one uses Steel or Poison type moves except for Stab or lack of movepool variety, and because of that they're thrusted up to being Top 5 typing (imo)
@@Whodjathink top 5? It's tied for #1 most OP best alongside Steel.
Bug and Fire should be super effective against Fairy, they both need some love, Bug could be much better on offense and defense, and it would give the most OP type combo (Steel/Fairy) a 4x weakness to a common offensive typing in Fire.
Bug and Fire both need buffs anyway, that or a massive nerf / total erasure of Stealth Rock.
@@alyssarichardson2544 That'd still be in top 5 but you agree lol. If anything Fairy should be either not very effective or outright unable to damage Grass and Bug because Fairies caring for nature and all that. It'd help give one of the two weakest types a nice pivot niche from the fairies
The only thing that I dont hate about Kingambit is the fact that because it matters when you play yours, it makes Pokemon feel even more like a game of chess, which that evolutionary line namesake was already based on 😂
Pokemon is king-send with how they made the game. All the same mechanics played in a million different ways
Great video! Never realized how much Dark changed things tbh
I hated psychic types in gen 1 so much.
That feeling of impotence in front of stupidly looking frail mons who actually had no weaknesses, hit hard and, most of all, were unreasonably fast.
Even the gym leader of this type, Sabrina, was powerful and arrogant in a serious way (not overconfident like many others).. to the point of enragement.
My favourite pokemon back then was Nidoking.
When Tyranitar came out:
REVENGE!
This is how they changed everything.
Darkness, not light, brought hope to fight back!
sounds like you fucking hate alakazam lol
Great analysis (:
Great video my guy
Such a great video
Wish we had psychic types that have the ability to be immune to dark type moves, like a dark version of stormdrain
I've said similar about bug immunity before. Carnivine is a Venus fly trap so it's ability should nullify u-turn and other bug type moves. A grass type with levitate is redundant
Dark types have always had my favorite designs and ttar's my fav mon of all time. Shame they've been screwing him over in recent gens, but I'm glad to see so many dark types thriving. I think the buff vs Prankster was a bit much, tho.
I like that prankster immunity, giving types individual immunities is really interesting
@@connorbosley4431 I think I'm just salty that they did Mega Banette dirty one more time before taking away megas. I've always liked Grimm tho since it's a prankster mon that can beat dark types anyway.
If possible do a discussion for bug types as well
Like their history
pokeaimMD video essay on competitive pokemon. Nais!
Ttar and bisharp are always dubs
Thanks for showing some clips from False Swipe Gaming(5:33)(6:00). He does some excellent work.
I was a Dark type specialist in Sword! Contrary Malamar was my ace and it was supported by Prankster Liepard. I loved them and miss them dearly moving into gen IX. 😭💖
I haven’t played many Pokémon games but dark type is my favourite
Content has been great lately Joey. The effort isn’t going unnoticed!
4:30 It probably wasnt OU at the time(?), but Shiftry had the same typing as Cacturne so Cac wasnt the only pokemon in the entire game to be immune to both psychic and leech seed :]
Shiftry sucks.
Like a lot.
Dark types are the coolest. The do solid damage and they have great utility too. If i made a personal top 50 mon list, a third would be dark probably
What I always liked about Dark is that many of the moves depend on the enemy. Thief steals an item, Knock Off gets rid of it, Sucker Punch depends if they attack, Pursuit depends on whether they switch, Payback damage depends on if they attack first, etc
The last couple days I reignited my love for mon. I always play a couple rounds randbats everyday on downtime but since GF killed the timer i lost more and more interest since i prefer wifi. It's so good to come back and know that the bois are always making content
You can have a good timer now just have to prep it at least a day b4 :(

Murkrow in early gen 9 VGC: it’s been 3,000 years
These types of videos are the school presentations that I would love to learn more about
Still wish we could use pursuit in gen 9
Kingambit shouldn't have it then
No thank you
Can you please make a video about ghost and dark types and if they should be combined together?
I’m a Gen 1 kid, was 5 when RBY came out, played the hell out of GSC - favorite gen. I’m 30 now and had no idea and/or never noticed how typing affected moves in Gens 1-3. Great vid👍🏽
Sneasle couldn't use dark type moves properly pre-gen 4. Instead it would have to stick with Shadow Ball.
One thing I’ve wondered is how big type are super effective against both psychic and dark type Pokémon, aside from GameFreak made them that way. Since it isn’t really obvious much like how the common element type Pokémon perfectly counter one another ie fire beats grass, grass beats water, water beats ground and so on. Plus tyranitar and hydreigon are two of my favorite dark type Pokémon and perfectly embody the title of pseudo legendary Pokémon, despite the flaws both Pokémon have respectively.
I think it's cuz of how humans respond to bugs. We are much bigger than them but lots of people still fear them. It's a psychological infliction, and I guess dark minds fall for it too. This is just a guess I've had myself before
Dark became what Psychic used to be. And Fairy has now become what Dark was.
Dark was never that dominant my guy. Before gen 6 it was mid (not bad mid).
@@copperface3574 by Gen 4 Dark was no longer resisted by steel. Dark was an Excellent STAB.
No fam, gen 6 is when that change happened
Fairy became what Psychic used to be. Dark just got better on its own merits.
Bring back this series pls
This is my favorite form of content that you provide for us, thank you doctor.
I think you switched up isle of armor and crown tundra during the Gen 8 part
May we take this time to appreciate the designer behind 2nd generation Tyranitar and Houndoom, those 2 were absolutely some of my favorites also is it just me, or did the Elite Four Karen's Houndoom Crunch always do more damage than it should, or did feel like it.
I think Dark/Poison may be my favourite type combination. Espacially on Alolan-Muk, because it covers both weaknesses perfectly (except ground). Alolan-Muk was a Psychic and Fairy destroyer in VGC and doubles (my preferred formats of Gen 7) aka Tapus who?
How good were dark types actually? =)
Dark Types used to be terrifying. Now they're Terra Flying.
My favorite type baby shoutout darkrai
LMAO I forgot you used to dynamax your facecam
Removing pursuit was such an uncompetitive decision
Make pursuit ttars signature move (no bias!!!)
You forgot to mention eject button pex into pursuit ttar aganst hoopa u, which kade it fall to ou after having one of the most powerful moves in the game
Shoutout to VGC players with Dark gaining an immunity to prankster in the later gens
what about gen 7 change to dark immunity to priority moves?
you mixed up the dlc order, urshifu is isle of armor and spectrier is tundra
My favorite type. Not even because of viability, it’s just a cool type with tons of cool Pokémon, including my absolute favorite. Also, it’s Tera type is easily my favorite, the only one that comes even close is Steel
What game is shown when he's discussing gen 4?
i love mandibuzz
Add pursuit back but make it fail if the opponent was not switching out an give it base 60 power without double damage on switching out
I always feel like they should've made Dark a physical type and changed Ghost to a special type. Although Gen 3 meta may have been not so great if that had been the case.
You get an immunity for psychic but also you’re weak to fighting and uturn
I miss him... my ttar
When you realize Gamefreak didn’t make a type combo with those two new types until 3 generations later
14:23 Wasn't Darkrai Ubers? Poor Darkrai... RIP
I think people underestimate how ridiculously powerful and present Dark type is right now. The Knock Off buff, key resistances and Prankster immunity pushed them over the edge and it became super apparent with the Treasures of Ruin. Both Dark and Ghost need a nerf next gen, and they need to work on buffing Psychic back to not being (mostly) garbage now
Honestly I think making steel resist both again and making a couple more fighting pokemon with scrappy would be good. I don't think is busted as much as the treasures of ruin and Supreme overlord gambit (in singles) are. Roaring moon too but I think booster energy is more the issue. Idk tho, I'm not super deep in comp mons but still play a decent amount.
Steel is already like the best type in the game it really doesn't need another buff
@@jazzercise300steel should never have resisted ghost or dark imo. Best way to buff psychics would be to make it super effective against steel since in the anime psychics were able to bend spoons.
>dark needs a nerf when Fairy exists
lol
"dark needs a nerf next gen"
Don't give them ideas, I've already suffered enough with protean/battle bond's nerf and the elimination of knock off from krookodile, bisharp and weavile's move pools
18:42 “easily”
7:57 *When you take a dump, but your toilet catches on fire*
Shoutout to XENON, the OG gen2 battler
Yama is sometimes seen in gen 3 ou because it switches into bliss really Ez not just cuz knock off. Offensive Yama doesn’t even always run knock
darkrai got skipped over, damn
this video was made so joey could flex his gen 8 face cam prowess
Really surprised nobody and i mean nobody brushes up on the Super underrated moves IE punishment and Embargo....

I miss seeing Joey dynamax on face cam
I really want pursuit back.
Psychics were so overbearing in Gen 1 that if you didn’t have a friend to trade with Kadabra could solo the entire game.
Abra has stats on par with fully evolved Gen 1 Pokémon. Abra has base 105 special attack and 90 speed.
One time for shits and giggles I traded Abra to crystal. I taught it Psychic and all 3 elemental punches then traded it back.
Kadabra was a powerhouse.
Enough time has passed: focus energy scope lens meteor regidraco terrorizes UU and OU
I wonder how different Gen 9 OU would be if Pursuit returned. If done properly (I.e don’t be dumb and give Kingambit or Roaring Moon Pursuit), I don’t think Pursuit will have a significant impact considering the best mons in OU. Curious to see what everyone thinks.
That and if pursuit didn’t double in power of you switch out, instead becoming 60 bp (if I’m remembering how pursuit works)
@@shirshobanerjee7751 🤔 You know, that doesn't sound all to bad actually. Double Damage from 40 to 80 isn't all that bad in a vacuum but when you consider why the opponent is switching, it's usually enough to punish them for not just staying in. It having a flat 60 but still hitting opponents that switch could be the balance it needs honestly
No thank you
It would be like making shadow tag and arena trap ou legal no thank you
Tytar got badly nerfed in Gen IX, so sad
what about darkrai 14:22
I miss ttra this gen.
Me waiting until excradrill comes back in gen 9💀💀💀
10:05 nor are gen 8-9 fine with fucking Dragapult going around risking no pursuit
you forgot about mandibuzz in gen 8
while editing was thinking Krookodile will be mentioned but there is just so many dark pokemon if he covered them all, Mandi was great and still is and they also deserve their own video in the future I would think
19:24 me: (Brain click)

Joey: Cornucopia
What about Incineroar?
God in double battles
Mediocre in single battles(what this vid is about)
Day 2 until Joey uses a Shell Bell team!
lmao weavile was on the map and still is the map
Wooper?
They need to nerf ghosts and buff bugs. Give another resist to ghost and let bugs either resist or beat fairy.
They shouldnt need to create a mon like Garg. They buffed ghost and dark in gen 6, but dark had another check in fairy. They didnt add any compensation for ghost or bugs. Just make another ghost resist
Bug should resist Water honestly.
Ice should have resisted fairy, not fire
Getting rid of pursuit and stripping krookodile, weavile, and bisharp of knock off is really irritating me.
Anyone watching now that Ryranitar dropped to RU?
So back in Gen 3 did sableye not serve any purpose as it had no weaknesses and what about Sharpedo, mightyene obviously wasn’t much cuz it’s attack stat is eh and it’s speed is bad and Shiftry could do the exact same thing that Cacturne could do against Celebi but eh?
Mightyena was just Absol but worse in everyway(bar Intimidate but there were so much better mons with that ability)
