I simply can’t get enough of this Beauty, power + grace ! Great split screen comparison with desperate athletic Albrecht vs Sleeping Beauty stylish elegance. Fabulous as always 👏👏
I did love Nureyev. But Baryshnikov was the better classical dancer, by far. Even Nureyev himself said that. And the glimpse in Baryshnikovs eyes that gave that little extra of himself to his dance is so amazing and extraordinary✨. Thats what creates a star. I both love and adore Baryshnikov 👌👏❤️
It is extraprdinary to invest such work. Skill and intelligence into a dance style thatdestroys the bodybefore the age of forty. I can understand why B. escaped the Russian prison ofclassicalballet in order to enjoy the variety andthrill of modern dance options and freedom of personal expression
Baryshnikov defied gravity. His body was whip toned and should have been muscle heavy but the grace and sharp acuity of his moves belied what should have been muscle bound drag. When he leapt into the air, you could actually see a PAUSE before he descended to earth. It is so unfortunate that a dancer’s career is so short lived. You had to make your mark quite early to ride out a successful career. So wonderful to watch.
Kent, there are no words to express my gratitude for your efforts to show the beauty of Baryshnikov's dance and such a diverse range of his steps! it is also very cool to learn about Marianna Tcherkassky, she is a wonderful dancer and beautiful partner for Misha! special thanks for the subtitles of your comments )) have a nice day!

Погружаешься в музыку , глаз не оторвать от танца Михаила Барышникова, динамично и завлекательно так, что не чувствуется трудность исполнения. Вот так сложность выглядит естественностью , завораживающая картина танца.
Fantastic as usual! I somehow missed this when it was first posted. Your analysis is informative and fun, two words that don't often go together. Thanks so much.
What a treat to discover both these out takes and your perceptive commentary on them! I am deeply indebted to you for your videos. I'm not only learning to identify certain steps, but how to discern superior/unique execution by talented artists like Baryshnikov, Simkin, Corella, etc.
Wonderful! Lucette Aldous who does the quick snippet with Bujones doing Black Swan in the film was one of my teachers and a wonderful person. These were really interesting to see...thank you!
@@KentGBecker Yes...actual she is a New Zealander and coached me when I was in the Australian Ballet. That step Misha does at the beginning of the Florimund solo....kinda like a six in front do you think? Like in 4th with three beats?
@@oliverdownunder9397 six in front sounds reasonable. Grant calls it an Ailes de Pigeon, but a dancer I consulted does not think the term has currency. Take a look at my notes at the end of the video for more detail.
@@KentGBecker No I don’t think it has currency either but I could be wrong.. To me it looks a bit like a six de vole but in 4th. It’s a lovely step. Ok I will check it out.
@@KentGBecker There's a few snippets of the Aldous/Nureyev/Helpman film of Don Q (Australian Ballet1973) on UA-cam. There is also a lovely Aldous/Fleming Flindt La Sylphide on UA-cam - Ballet Rambert production - with Aldous name spelled 'Aldoux' (if you are searching).
Please! Could you make such analytical video about Alexander Godunov and Nikolai Fadeechev as well? At least one video for each of these ballet dancers, that is very characteristic to them and to their art of ballet dance.
I had always thought the jump you describe from 3:21 onwards was a cabriole until you broke it down in slow motion. Now that I know what to look for, I think José Martinez does the same step at 10:28 in Don Q here: ua-cam.com/video/AmVE3ULKmM8/v-deo.html. Thank you so much again for these technical notes; they are fascinating and show here how a dancer with Baryshnikov's level of technique can modify a step to contribute to the characterisation of the part he is dancing.
Thanks for your comment. Check out the glossary at the end where one dancer says that the term Ailes de Pigeon does not have currency among dancers and thinks it is more of a double cabriole. I had never heard of the term until a comment in my video on Baryshnikov from September.
The scenery is distracting in the Sleeping Beauty solo. I would agree to leave that out of the movie. Baryshnikov is the absolute apex dancer IMHO: power, precision, panache.
I can't find The Turning Pointe on any streaming service. If anyone knows of a streaming service that carries the movie, let me know. I have an old fashioned DVD of the movie that I watch on my computer.
I was a high school dance teacher for many years and finding a copy of the turning point after my old one wore out was a real problem. I finally purchased a new VHS copy at the movie for about $80. Interesting I could not find the movie on DVD which was the primary format at the time. So I have a very usable VHS copy of the movie!!
I am going to answer my own question. eBay has a seller that sells a DVD made in China. It is all region, subtitles, reasonably priced and ran perfectly.
While this is wonderful footage, the narrating is just FLAT, hurried and really hard to listen to. Really ruining the entire performance we are supposed to be enjoying. Oh well, can't have it all, I guess!

It’s remarkable how well “The Turning Point” did at the movie box office, considering that ballet is movie house box office poison, especially today.
Wasn't Black Swan successful at the box office? I don't think there's been any major ballet- themed or centric films recently.
