  • Hello!
In this week's video I show you what a day in the life looks like as a post-doc / research scientist in environmental and analytical chemistry!
Video features: a very busy day in the lab, method validation chats and chats about analytical chemistry method development
    I hope you enjoy :)

My name is Jessica and I’m a research scientist researching emerging contaminants in environmental samples. I previously carried out a PhD at the University of Aberdeen in the field of marine natural products chemistry. I started my UA-cam channel to document my journey in research and to offer my advice to other students. Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Jessica, how are you? So great to see you at your new role! Seems like you are getting the hang of Environmental Analytical Chem work! Hehe! Do you use MeOH to extract your salmon samples in PFTE (teflon) tubes? Are your cleanup columns also PFTE? We usually use glass columns for PCB work that we load with silica from scratch!

Hey!! I’m good thanks, how are you? Long time no speak! The tubes aren’t PTFE, they’re PP and I do an extensive alkaline wash of all glassware and plastic before use. I do find I have some small contamination for some of the smaller PFAS I’m working on but only for around 2 out of 30 (and not the most important ones!). Thanks for sharing your methods 😋🫶🏻

The cleanup columns are also specifically for PFAS work!

@@drjessicagomezb Gotcha! I might have to talk to you one to one in a couple of months. I am trying to wrap up my PhD. So busy times! Haha!

Also, I completely get the part when it is hard to film when too many people are working in the lab or you have just too much to do to actually stop and record and explain!
