I don't understand the down votes for this film. It's a superior war film. Jimmy Stewart was a war veteran who flew nearly 20 dangerous bombing raids over Germany. It affected him deeply and for that reason he chose to never appear in WW2 themed movies ... He made the sole exception for this one. It was a good choice too.
Jimmy Stewart was the actor that I would loved to have met, but never did. We often imagine that one very special actor, personality, 'star' that would be so fascinating to meet - he was the one - Jimmy Stewart. Such a talented man. (Bev P)

Oh we have many. Unfortunately they never get a whiff of a chance to serve in politics. I am life long Republican. It matters not who my POTUS is,as long as he wins. We are the only party who does not use people to get votes. Dems use you then drop you and go on to another fake I am here to help you. Don't believe it? Every state run by a Democrat is in shambles. Always has been. We want YOU to help our country, not what can YOU do to help me get into power. I truly pray GOP can hold on and win this next election. Trump with all his critics has done more for the American people than Obama in EIGHT YEARS. Everything that is offered free is not free. Nothing is free. We ask you to work for your country. That's all we ask. I am kind of amazed you put the word rare in your comment. The American people as a hold have given more blood sweat and tears to the world than any country or people on the planet. We don't want anything more than peace and calm and a day to go to work and lead a good life. Think thats what China, or the middle east wants ? If we could control our immigration closely in the next 20 years we could get this country humming again. God willing, the Wuhan virus leaves us all alone. Please remember something. A POTUS represents your party for 4 or 8 years. If a POTUS does good things for both parties,he is a pretty good POTUS. One thing never changes, your beliefs. The POTUS changes, but not your beliefs. It must be agonizing for good Democrat people to see their party swing so far to the Left. Biden actually declared if he will get ekected,it will be the farthest he has taken our country in its entire lifetime. We the people will not let that happen. The good people you speak of as rare will not let that happen. Remember this...a POTUS is not what makes this country. The good people make this country. Regardless of who is in office. THAT IS WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT. No other country on earth operates like that. Democracy is getting hard to hold on to. Nothing is more precious to the American people. You better understand that. If you don't,,it will be gone. And it's too late. Don't concentrate who is in office, but what does he do for our country? Trump with all his issues, has done just what he told us he would do. THAT is unusual and rare.
Great movie. The major took on this job, as he was an engineer, and had a very naive mindset about it. Very cut and dry- which it turned out not to be- as war always is. Doing what was ordered, but having internal conflicts, only to be told "good job". And to not win the woman in the end, as she is educated and has her own set of standards. Both Americans and Chinese fighting the Japanese( who never appear)- allies with so many cultural conflicts.Great cast! Beautifully and thoughtfully written- great acting. All around incredible movie. I have never come across this one before. Many thanks.
@@richardbowers3647 That is interesting. Taking that in consideration, and then looking at the American viewpoint through the characters' actions, it makes sense. I really liked this movie, because so much of the movie was played beneath the action- the behaviours, words/ or not things being said...I told my daughter that one could wrote an extensive paper about this movie- I am glad to see that you saw that, too.
James Stewart. A great Scot, a proud piece of Scotia and he was proud of it. Every bit of his blood was a true Scot of and, a true blooded All patriot Loyal American. God rest his Soul.

@Darrell McCall dear Darrell, I respect and bow myself in front of all the brave soldiers irrespective of any country , the comment posted by me is in response to the movie
Burly, coarse, raspy-voiced Mike Kellin (who plays "Prince") was often cast as a tough cop, gangster, or soldier, usually a corporal or sergeant, so it may be surprising to some that during his stint in the US Navy during World War II he was a Lieutenant Commander. He died real good in 1962's Hell Is For Heroes! Thanks for uploading!
Saw this film when I was six years old. My father served during the Korean War. I think the directions this great film scared the crap out of me back then. Tganks
This is an amazing metaphor for the American Experience in so many conflicts (especially Vietnam). What astonishes me is the film was made in the early 1960's predating much of the American involvement in Vietnam. Steward is at his best here as a reluctant Army Engineering Officer leading a demolition team. The journey is reminiscent on Conrad "Heart of Darkness"! Its interesting to see Harry Morgan in this supporting role as the First Sergeant. This appears to be something of a breakout role for a young Glenn Corbett as the sympathetic enlisted man trying to help refugees only to be done in by his good deeds.
Were you sitting on his shoulder? Most of them who served in that war, or ANY other, would have definitely felt fear...Their fear wouldn't petrify them, however, and their courage allowed them to do what needed to be done...A true hero, for sure, but without fear? You maybe have no fear but we mortals know both fear AND courage and we are NOT ashamed...
Wow. I never thought I'd so dislike any character played by Jimmy Stewart. He did figure it out in the last seconds, but too late. Lisa Lu was magnificent! Glenn Corbett is one of the most BEAUTIFUL men, my oh my! I loved the character he played here. All the other guys + the icon Harry Morgan...stellar cast and acting!!
In the immortal words of Big Jim McBob and Billy Sol Hurok, "That ammunition dump blowed up good!" "Yeah, it blowed up real good!!" RIP all you great actors we've enjoyed through our lifetimes.
This film was shot in Arizona near the mystery mountains. There is a museum that films history videos. One of the hosts was there during the filming of this and jogged my memory about this movie. It has been a long time since I have seen it.
Any Jimmy Stewart movie is a good movie, but this falls into the category of great movie, such a versatile and talented actor, and a great supporting cast in this one, good old “Col Sherman Potter” another great actor. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
I went to The Generals Show in London where his partner was HARVEY THE GIANT RABBIT and I sat in the second row with no one in front of me ! Great show and act from the General.RIP.💐
If you are ever near Indiana, Pennsylvania, northeast of Pittsburgh visit the Jimmy Stewart museum. Well worth any diversion. Indiana was Jimmy's hometown. A propeller from the plane in the Fight of the Phoenix movie is there too.
Moviemaking is a far shallower art these days. Today's films satisfy on only a surface level. Big explosions, ridiculous sex scenes and as much lurid as they can pack into a 20 minute script to turn it into a feature film. Old films gave us characters, plots and the true ART of cinema. They told stories that moved us, that shaped our thoughts and morals. They gave us heroes with prison stripes and generals with heavy consciences under bluff and bluster. They gave us fine actors and gifted directors. And no CGI.
I am quite familiar with the area in Arizona where the movie was filmed, some of the scenes down some dirt roads I happen to know. Until I saw this movie, I didn't know that Jimmy Stewart and Henry Morgan made a movie there--or any movie was made there for that matter. It is such a weird juxtaposition of realities in my world!
ONLY War Movie Jimmy Stewart EVER approved of, and Played a Real Combat Soldier in. SMALL Movie with BIG moral lessons about the use of Power. Tragic and Sad moments! First movie I've ever seen Jimmy Stewart Weeps! Watch and find out WHY!
I laughed , but admired Glenn Corbett’s ability when he spoke Chinese to the Chinese woman in the jeep (Lucy Lu). He actually did a decent job speaking Chinese ❤. He kept it simple but to the point. Great movie!
The Chinese were not communists during ww2. The allies never trusted the russians or communists during ww2. Anybody that knew General Patton will tell you that.
General Jimmy Stewart, USAF (Retired), was a great Patriot and a true American legend. You can have all the wimpy, liberal actors of today who care very little for the USA. I'll take Stewart, John Wayne, James Cagney and their generation over them any day!
My dad was a B-24 ball turret gunner in his group in England. Exhausted from a mission he neglected to salute a new Lt who assigned him to dog work. Jimmy came around with a football wanting to get a quick game going. Found out what my dad was up to and why. That Lt got to police the field for the entire game in the old man's place.
I saw the first few Missing Few Opening Minutes (before) that were cut due to Copyright Infringement on Music; and First Opening Scene says, '1944, an Airfield in China.'
Ah, maybe not the jeep, lol. Looks like an M38, not an MB or GPW. Have never seen this movie, so another first and already 64 y.o. :-) Take it back. After thinking about it, I caught it part way through several years ago. Great story! Great movie! Jimmy and Harry were in a couple war movies together.
Yes,these military vehicles were Korean War vehicles not WW2,these vehicles didnt even exist until around 1951,must have been a tight budget and thats all they could find, good movie except for that, but 95% of viewers wouldnt know the difference anyway!
My Dad was a demolition expert in WWII -- -- Although he would never speak about any of it. Told us no stories. I wish I could have known the stories but I think he felt that was part of his duty to his country -- to never speak of it.
my stepfather was a demolition expert also. 82nd Airborne WWII including Normandy. he told me a couple stories before he passed away in 2001. a real tough man considering what he went through. we were sitting at the kitchen table and my mother once asked him (while Michigan was going through a bad recession depression) if things could get any worse. he told her and me that, yes, things could get much much worse. I think he was thinking back to his wartime days.
My father was a young US Navy officer stationed at Pearl Harbor before and during the Japanese attack.. He had no war stories either.. He never spoke of it.
The m1 Grand a great weapon....I fired my 2 rifles until my shoulder was sore....the marines made great use of it in the pacific campaigns....I wish I hadn't sold them... 😣
Jimmy hated the war and never worked on another WW2 film. Sure as hell he knew how to fly that 25. He was an honest-to-God war hero. He'd disagree. Buck Compton told me, and I've read about other Vets, who said that the only heroes were the ones who didn't come home. God Bless them All.
I have never seen this film before and was NOT expecting to see James Stewart in the lead . As Noriko Otsuki has just said he is a quite remarkable human being . Also seeing Colonel Potter ( M.A.S.H) .
I've never seen this movie but I'll have to say one thing it has to be the most factual and realistic thing to come out of Hollywood not to mention it was made the year I was born
i watched these movies when i was a kid growing up in the 70's and I thought if they only knew how great everything's turned out they'd be happy. Then i realized they got promised a very different life when they got home, a better job, an education and 'a slice of the American dream.' They got stuck selling insurance, working for some factory, some corporation and they wound up in yet another chain of command. It's a wheel and you can't get off it without really understanding the dynamic of life itself.
yeah well black bird, they got the g.i. bill, which enabled tens of thousands of those vets to get a college degree. Or working for some factory for wages their dad's couldn't even imagine. Sure they just ended up in the great rat race, but thats what mattered back then. Provide, procreate, protect, then die. None of them even realized it was a rat race until they got their first heart attack at 45, and their teen aged kids despised them for slaving for "the man". America provided far more for it's ww2 vets than any other country in history. And the dynamic is flawed, and inescapable, so what was the alternative?
@@kingofbeers5673 you're pushing on an open door friend. I'm saying since the Revolutionary War vets have had to argue for their rights after the battle's long over in this country. In Rome 2k years ago centurions had to argue to get their land from a government that didn't care either. It's an uphill fight and it's a sucker's game to think it's all gravy when they get home.
@@blackbird5634 But that's my point bro. For the first and only time in history, (that I'm aware of) the ww2 vets did indeed come home to a grateful government. They were literally showered with money, education, and other incentives to reintegrate them back into society. Perhaps there were those in the federal government who remembered the shameful treatment of our ww1 vets. Or more likely, they realized that a huge number of well compensated vets equaled a huge block of sympathetic voters.
@@kingofbeers5673 we're in total agreement and this is a conversation i'd have enjoyed in person without this goddamn covid sh** with Prof. Chomsky, and yourself. be safe, and well, and strong, keep on keepin on.

Morgan and Stewart. Never a doubt a worthwhile view. A lot of great actors in this. Vets and newcomers. 4 those of U 80s kids, guess who? Hint, he was also in some old western series. The acting, action and production on this is better than most 2day. No doubt when respect, pride, dignity was important. Not so much 2day. Nice job building a Chinese temple in the Mojave Desert.
My aunt peggys husband fought in ww2 in an outfit called Saco's raiders in china, teaching the chinese how to fight and blowing the hell out of the Japanese advance. Aunt peg said after the war he was home 6 months in Seattle before someone spotted him in a Ballard bar living it up and tipped her off! She went and got him, found out he was not the man who she married before he left to fight. A real wild man when he returned. She already had 7 kids by him so she dragged him home. They had 2 more together, trying to work it out. They lived out in Bellvue before they built the floating bridges. The kids said when peggy was working nights as a waitress in Seattle, he would sometimes get drunk, line the 9 kids up by a bonfire, walking back and fourth, screaming at them in Japanese, firing his .45 as he paced. Eventually he would pass out and they all ran into the woods to hide. Wow! Eventually this drove her to take the kids and leave him. They found him several years later in the burned out shell of this house in the deep woods. They told her he fells asleep drunk while smoking in bed! My aunt peg was quite the wonderful person. She has passed away and they just do not make them like her any more! I feel blessed to have gotten to know her!
That's a sad story. I expect all the men who saw action were changed forever but some couldn't hold it together at all and there were just expected to carry on as though nothing had happened. . My father was in Italy WW2 and became a workaholic /alcoholic. He had to keep his mind either fully occupied or dulled, because not a day went by he didn't think of it (the war).
My Grandfather served in the Army Air and helped fight World War Two , I've even got a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the Commander General , and a letter signed by President Harry Truman.
Scott George That’s something to treasure. Your granddad was a special man. My dad went to Canada in 1939 and joined the Canadian army to fight the Nazis. The US didn’t enter the war until two years later so many American patriots went to Canada because they were at war against the Axis nations. When I was in basic and a sergeant asked me about my dad he told me he was a hero.

James Best also played in this movie, just another great actor with no recognition.
Jimmy did ok.
Unless you count Malaya (1949).
Can you tell us more about that one Peter? Is it worth trying to find?
Look in his wikipedia entry.
"I don't understand the down votes for this film."
Did you not notice the beginning is missing?
Andrew Francis just because he was a veteran doesn't mean that this is a good movie
James Best was a great actor too! 👏🏼😎
Jimmy Stewart was the actor that I would loved to have met, but never did. We often imagine that one very special actor, personality, 'star' that would be so fascinating to meet - he was the one - Jimmy Stewart. Such a talented man. (Bev P)
Arguably the best James Stewart movie ever made. He wasn’t acting.

Quite an unusual- and rare- American. Intelligent, a gifted leader, and humble. We need more like him. In fact, we need people like him today.
And he has doubts and moral Qualms - Carefully Listen to what he says to Collins just before the First Bridge is blown
😂😂😂😂😂 like the rest of the world has good leaders. Wtf?

James Stewart was a fine man, airmen, General and also a terrific actor who more a bit of human behavior.
Always thought that the Chinese girl represented china in this story. Just commenting.

Very good film. Great Stewart: a real hero and fantastic actor. Greetings from Brazil.
He's more than an actor.
He was a actual war hero in WW2!
Saw this film when I was six years old. My father served during the Korean War. I think the directions this great film scared the crap out of me back then. Tganks
James Stewart . . . always . . a hero, all generations !
Col.Potter, WW2 days, before Korea .
Harry Morgan, way before M.A.S.H.

IF you research and see her publicity color shots in a bathing suit, you may agree.
This appears to be something of a breakout role for a young Glenn Corbett as the sympathetic enlisted man trying to help refugees only to be done in by his good deeds.
stupid is dangerous and he paid the price.

MFR. Outstanding performance in James Stewart, Harry Morgan and Crew -- The A Team! Thank You!
Mr Stewart faced the enemy in the dangerous skies of ww2.. he faced the dangers without fear like a true hero.. .✌️

Strange how we fought the Germans and the Japnese in WWII And the Russians and the Chinese were our Allies, and now, the opposite is true.
No!!!! Our enemy is a monster born right here in the USA!! 1946..

Not to mention James Best. One of those character actors that was in so many movies yet hardly noticed.

Jimmys the real deal as regards world war two .
I expect all the men who saw action were changed forever but some couldn't hold it together at all and there were just expected to carry on as though nothing had happened. .
