I am for all such innovations! We are so good at it. Personally I even repurpose toothbrushes for cleaning! I think this is similar to the Chaparral missile system that was fielded in 1969 by US and was also used by Israel.
I believe that these two systems based R-73 IR Missile and R-27 Is not that effective because we need that big a thermal signature for the missile to hit successfully.. also missile with passive seeker is a fox 1 type missile which needs constant guidance from radar and it will loose track if radar lock is broken .. These missiles will be very effective if we have a UCAV with a fire control Radar which can fire or guide missiles .. And we can also install them in our old aircrafts and make them fly in un manned mode i.e HJT Kiran with these missiles can be very deadly
Bro want ur opinion on this- Commonality & functionality of aircrafts between both the navy & airforce would be profitable in long term. We'll be getting certain TOT of GE F414-INS6 engines which will be powering Tejas mk2, TEDBF & AMCA MK1. The same engine is also used in FA-18 SH. If both the Navy & IAF select FA-18 SH with certain enhancements then it would be a wise decision. IAF may not require the arrestor hook & ask to replace the foldable wing with fixed wing which may also reduce the cost of per unit aircraft, thus we can have more aircrafts with the alloted budget. This synergy of platforms between airforce & navy will also create economies of scale since a lot of our indigenous programs will be using the same GE engines. Royal Australian Airforce also use FA-18SH
Good points ji. The deletion of arrestor hook and the foldable wing may be quite expensive as per one Boeing engineer I met. It may even need re-certification though I am not sure about that.
That's an very clever move.....
Hope we will see same system based on ASTRA MK2 AND MK3, surely it'll surpass the American NASAMS.
So,a good weapon against UAVs & Drones
Heard some countries are using old Air-to-Air short range missiles also as Air to Ground missiles.
This kinda jugaad wins wars
If 4 missiles can be mounted,it will be great

Isn't NASAMS and SPYDER is also based on same concept?
I've a slingshot, I'm thinking of converting it into air defence system
_i think instead of this jugad, old soviet 9K33 OSA air defense which is improved updated by Poland, will be much better._
Good jugaad agaisnst drones
Jay hand.

They are upgraded.. Don't compare old ones with upgraded ones.
