I have the same laptop, (with a few differences like : i7 8th gen core, 32 gb ram, 1 tb storage, and Nvidia 940MX) and honestly: its still amazing. it has great battery, a very clear display, portable and a perfect student laptop Plus if you are into gaming, it is a really powerful laptop for that. It runs Davinci resolve 4k editing without any lag as well. would totally recommend it.

I’ve been using this as my only computer for 2 years now (since Feb 2018). It is still a very fast machine today. I don’t edit videos but I do use Handbrake occasionally and play a few games. The 4 cores and 8 threads still feel modern, esp. when you consider that the newest 10th gen Intel Ice Lake laptops also come in 4c/8t. I have upgraded to an m.2 NVMe SSD which is not officially supported on the Acer website (supposedly, the m.2 slot is SATA-only). But its NVMe support is Gen 3 x2 speed (not x4). Still three times faster than a SATA SSD in benchmarks. The RAM is DDR3L, not DDR4. I have also thought of attaching an unused Apple sticker to it, but haven’t done so. 😄 How’s your boot time? Mine used to be around 9 seconds from pressing the power button to usable desktop. But after 2 years and several programs/windows updates, it has degraded to 22s. Upgrading to NVMe SSD trimmed that down to 17s, which is still acceptable to me. I’ve never reinstalled Windows 10.
Sorry for the delayed reply! My boot time has stayed at 9 seconds so far. During the middle of last year I completely wiped the SSD and reinstalled windows which really helped to keep it speedy. It could also be that my Laptop hasn’t seen as much use as my desktop (especially recently). Nowadays it’s mostly a media consumption device and I sometimes play Minecraft and Fortnite on it.

I have the model from late 2015 with third-world specs (DVD, 768p screen, 5400rpm drive, 4GB RAM) which I bought brand new for ~$500 and several upgrade with SSD and RAM, thanks to it's easy upgradability, this laptop is still kicking and does all the thing I need really well. the 940M DDR3 (not even GDDR5) that it have start to show it age now if I wanted to play newer game but I mostly played old or lightweight game while on the go, so it's still is serviceable. The battery is probably the worse in here, I think mine loss 30% of the capacity so battery lasted only for hour on balanced setting. webcam is absolute shite on this one but because of that it turned out to be advantage if you need to **cough** cheating **cough** in an online exam. overall, for $500 brand new in 2015, I think it is definitely money well spent for me.
My new Acer laptop I ordered just arrived today. It's nearly identical to this, but with twice the storage, and a much thinner size overall. I don't know if the temperatures are any better or worse though. It was $530 on Newegg.
I'm going to start using this for editing my videos on the go. Are their any certain settings you set your acer at to optimize its performance? (For ex: lowering resolution to decrease frame dropping?)
I always the performance mode to maximum settings but other than that I never touched anything on a system level. I could usually edit in Premiere at full resolution, but I would drop down to 1/2 if I was editing something a bit more hardware intensive.
Acer claims that the battery will last up to 12/13 hours but this is probably under the best possible circumstances. The battery lasts a good long while but definitely not 12 hours. Acer has some new laptops that have fairly impressive battery life so something in that range might be worth looking into.
To be honest, if you can afford it, the brand new M1 MacBook Air models are a very good option. You are still paying the “Apple Premium” but right now there’s really nothing else quite like it.

I've had mine going on about 2 years now... I've hardly taken it off the charger, can play Starcraft 2 for about an hour online, full brightness though. Screen closed, playing music can last several hours. I seriously bought mine intending on a low end gaming laptop. This video is awesome and assures me that this laptop is not for gaming like I wanted lol. I think I may have stressed the little graphics card a bit here and there, but for a laptop, she's a quick one.
