I was listening to the radio in '76, waiting to give my mom a ride home from her work when Ian Hunter's "All American Alien Boy" played. I remember hearing Jaco's solo and saying out loud, "Who the HELL was THAT!!?!?"
The look, tone and all round vibe of that bass is completely iconic, but I gotta say, it was your upbeat nature that made the video for me. I can tell you really love what you do, right on!
You are a true legend Jim. The way you look at the camera when you’ve played something truly incredible, makes you wonder what he had to go through within himself to make those beautiful sounds with something that already has some to it. You provide a wonderful teaching environment with your videos. You were a wonderful teacher, and with every bit of hard work, just know that you will forever be preserved as a prolific teacher in which all of your hard work is preserved and usable for generations to come. You have inspired young and old bass players to take a more methodical and tasteful approach to bass.
They go to enormous pains to copy Jaco's bass down to the tiniest detail of wear and tear - then they put flatwounds on it haha! Lovely sounding bass, so delicious :)
Been really trying to convince myself to buy this as my first bass in years and first "real" 4 string". Been playing on an esp 6 string bass and a 4 string 'cringe' Dean beginner bass. I've been wanting to have a good 4 string and you just convinced me!
Awesome bass , unfortunately I can’t afford one .. however can I ask your opinion on the tokai 1984 fretless jazz bass , I may have the opportunity in getting one . Regards Scott
Great video. I can recommend the super glue treatment for fretless, wear rate is amazing, I've been caning a few for a year or so and a refresh is nowhere in sight.
@@raipramana843 there's a lot of videos on here about the process, my channel has a few bits about it, but this helps the most, it's a vid on a couple of my fretless conversions being played by a pro. ua-cam.com/video/SyRGDhpj_F4/v-deo.html
I have that bass but can’t ever find the perfect strings to get that sound. What strings and Gages are you using please? Sounds gorgeous!!!! Thank youuuuu
Very nice playing. Somehow you sound more like p-bass player. I don't know what it is exactly.. Maybe some sort of tendency to play toward that p-bass punch. Jazz bass sound is more linear and the idea in jazz bass is to let the notes ring clearly for moment you mute them. It's less like upright bass than p-bass.
RIP Jim. Thanks for all the knowledge.
he passed away? :(
@@squidito2534 I think so his last video was 6 months ago
@@squidito2534 yeah... unfortunately...
Huh!
Oh wow. Really?
Man that is such a lively sound, I don't know if I've ever heard a bass that sounded like that

Oh yes! I'm a drummer but picked up bass die to Jaco and The Ox! Great playing...RIP.
Beautiful!!!...
Wonderful. Worth every penny you paid for it. That was a treat, thx.

You can clearly see how much you love playing that! Sounds great

Dude you sound amazing
Thanks. Glad you like it. :)
I don’t even know how to play fretless and I want to after watching this video.
Mean and funky.

You do realize this is the $5000 custom shop Jaco, right?
@@nonohmic766 I realized that much after I watched this. I still bought the normal one. Excellent bass after string swap.
Love that creamy tone👍. What tone settings do you have on your amp? Great videos btw😊
No amp. Going directly into Logic. No EQ. Thanks.
I want one. Lucky.
Oof, hard to miss that lovely growling
Stunning !! What amp are you running it through.
Where could I get one of these?? LORD, the sound is just something else.
Order it online from fender
Many boutique bass shops have them. There are also a number of used ones available.

Does the epoxy affect the tone of the bass?? Love the video
Yes, it does. Yes, it is an exopy coating on the fingerboard.
I would like to hear a lesson yours about compression on bass (pedal, rack, uses etc)..
Hey Jim, what strings to you use on that beautiful piece ?
Curt Mangan.

Love this review and playing, do anyone know that scale he's playing at 2:38?
It’s a jaco bassline
@@omarcapaso7156 do you know what song it is?
@@nedryerson988 Barbary coast
is it using fender custom shop 60s jazz bass pickups?
Is it really straight grain quartersawn one piece.
Miss you terribly, Mr. S., but I must clarify your statement about the epoxy coating. According to the Fender site, it's polyurethane.
the fender site i'm looking at definitely says its specifically epoxy coated ...make sure its the custom shop site you viewed.
What's that the Irish say ?
"Jesus, Mary and Joseph.."

when you are not at home, do you have a dog and the exact adress please ??!

Even though it's fretless. Still p-bass is more like upright.
Who is "Jocko?" Oh Jaco Pastorious, right.I thought it was pronounced Jacko.Silly me.....
Why would you want to feel a baby’s bottom?
I'm pretty sure jaco used flat wounds
very good bass...but....very bad tester please....
