Well, Helena explains it, but Johnny "walked into the role." because Tim usually asks him as a friend and Johnny says yes. However, Helena does not want people to get the idea of "Oh, shes dateinf Tim, so of course she gets the part." plus the writer of the music was actually someone Helena respected, she always wanted to play Lovett, but knew she had to get approved by the songwriter to get the part along with approval from Tim.
The agreement between Burton and Sondheim was: Tim stipulated at the outset that he wanted Johnny, but Johnny did do audition recordings for Sondheim, and Sondheim was favorably impressed. Helena wanted to make sure she didn't get the part just cuz she was Tim's girlfriend, and she wanted to really LEARN to sing, so she poured her heart and effort into it as she always does, and in the end Sondheim loved her audition recordings. So: it was just personal preferences and the deal they made. Maybe not fair, but part of the negotiations. Also: Ya gotta know that Tim believed in Helena. He probably knew all along that she had what it took to get Sondheim's approval. Cuz she is HELENA, for God's sake!!!
Excuse you @cullmurr. Tim Burton did an absolutely brilliant job with this film. It was never meant to be the same as the live show; cinema and stage are too different to be approached with the same methods and interpretations. Besides, this is Tim Burton we're talking about; he's hardly going to adapt any story, particularly THIS musical, in an ordinary or previously seen way, is he? And as for Helena ... Steven Sondheim himself had casting approval of Helena. She had to work for three months
i absolutely loved this movie, Tim Burton, you crazy maniac, you are Awesome, even if you did direct terrible films such as Alice in Wonderland, and Planet of the Apes (Charlie and the chocolate factory was underrated)
@nathbro123 me 2 Helena is great I am playing Mrs. Lovett in my schools production of this I asked the principle & he said yes but there is no killings in this version & I can't sing very well but I am perfect for the role so we will have Helena Bonham-Carter singing on a tape or something and I will lipsync (the whole thing was my idea)
I love him... He's amazing, and his movies are just unexplainable!!! His ideas are just gorgeous and make me dream about knowing him,and his unbelievable cast in ALL his films!!! Please Tim come to Brazil \o/
i had a vision while watching this of some time in the future, sitting by a fire, my boyfriend hugging me from behind singing "Not While I'm Around", and i got a fuzzy, warm feeling of hope...
You're... lip-syncing a school musical? ...What? I bet you'd have a lot more fun and the show would be a lot better if you tried your best and sang it. Also, how are you going to let the audience know that you're baking people into meat pies without showing the killings? I'm curious to know what you guys have come up with.
Lip Sincing (I don't know how to spell it...) is pretty much singing along to a song, but like acctually singing. So It looks like you are singing the song. That's all it is. It can be pretty dificult acctually.
I love this movie, but I'll never understand why Burton cast non-singers for a musical. There are so many people out there who are great at both acting and singing. Was it so that Johnny Depp's name could sell more tickets?
What happened to his fingers? I remember someone told me but I forgot! Did he trap them in the car door or something? Or does he have carpal tunnel syndrome?
plus sorry if i keep replying but the only reason i may have sounded like an asshole in the first comment people started using the word "genius" with tim burton and it got me mad and i gt carried away. but dont get me wrong he's still an overrated actor
he's just so unusual, but in a good way. he can't be compared to any other director! he's just amazing, it's actually hard to believe that somebody can have that much imagination! every time i see his movies, i'm like WOW that comes from somebody's head!!! bottom line, he's fantastic just like his projects!!! I love him!!!
Batman returns is a good movie. Sometimes I like the first better for being more straightforward, sometimes I like returns better for being more stylish and subversive. It depends on the mood and expectations. Batman (Bruce Wayne) is more in the spotlight in the first movie, in the second one he is simply an already established character that serves as a foil for the villains. Returns one is more dark and more campy at parts than the first one. Burton deserves the respect in my opinion.
He is a genius because only he makes movies on a level where every single scene contains visual symbolism, he has his unique visual style and is artistic. Is that good enough of an answer for you?
LOL, 3.24 I think hes about to say that sasha baron cohan has no feelings:P but he didnt mean in that way, I think he meant like, He doesnt care if he write sick things:P
He went out to make a dark brooding movie and he made a dark brooding movie that reinvented Batman. How about you keep your biased uneducated opinion about Burton to yourself?
i wont deny that batman 89 changed the face of batman and was a great movie but what im saying is that quadrilogy went downhill after that he even saisd that when creating batman returns he didnt have the heart for it and thats why he dropped the franchise. im sorry i didnt put my comment detailed enough i have no quarrel with 89 batman i like it. for a start they shouldnt have let Schumacher take over. anyway i was badmouthing batman returns. that shit was terrible in my opinion.
I totally agree :), but he've also made Charlie and the chocolate factory, which ofcourse isn't horror. And I actually don't think of splattering blood and heads on spikes whe I hear the word horror, I think it's more like dark room ghost thing, chock, light blue dead people, and that kind of stuff. It might be kind of horror, but I don't really find that the most accurate description...
Their not horror. Morbid, in a way, maybe. But not horror movie's. I don't even think I would like watching a horror movie, tho I love all of Mr. Burton's movie's. It's a very rare kind of theme his movies are based on, very delicate, perfect, and it's just not horror. :D (That didn't sound offendig, did it?)
me personally think he is a joke at his own expense and his attempt at writing seriously is laughable look at batman he went out to create a dark brooding movie and ended up with so many faults, bad puns and inuendo's
@agprincess013 it's the only feeling of hope i got from this movie. the rest just soiled by pure view of the world that my easy lifestyle and go with the flow attitude brought into existence. so let me have my hope...
Psychologically the more u r scared of something, the better the writing comes, when coming to write a scary story, because u r emotionally involved and u actually face the fear.
she was pregnant when she filmed Harry Potter 5, in the early stages, and her pregnancy progressed through sweeney todd, she was close to five months when it was finished.
For people in England, Tim is doing an interview with Jonathan Ross on Friday 26th :) Check out my video of my Top 50 movies with a lot of Burton movies :)
i seen his movies and i enjoy them but i know they are bad movies...and even if they are good...hes not a genius people need to stop using that word for everything they enjoy and you didnt answer my question dude....or girl actually if you are a girl it would explain alot and make much more sense
"Just thinking about it kinda makes my hair stand up."
Tim, your hair already stands up. :)
Well, Helena explains it, but Johnny "walked into the role." because Tim usually asks him as a friend and Johnny says yes. This is one of my favourite films ever! XD
Just one thing I dont get..... why did Helena have to audition and Johnny walked straight into his role???
The agreement between Burton and Sondheim was: Tim stipulated at the outset that he wanted Johnny, but Johnny did do audition recordings for Sondheim, and Sondheim was favorably impressed. Helena wanted to make sure she didn't get the part just cuz she was Tim's girlfriend, and she wanted to really LEARN to sing, so she poured her heart and effort into it as she always does, and in the end Sondheim loved her audition recordings. It's because him and Johnny have a connection and they enjoy working together.
I love all of Tim Burton's movies! You must enjoy your job!! Did you interview Johnny Depp??
luv him and helena. she got pregnant while filming. i thought that was so cool. the kids r cute, too. :) luv 'em both.

i can't belive that most of them weren't singers. they were amazing!
I know, he always has this "crazy scientist" look that I like xD
@nathbro123 me 2 Helena is great I am playing Mrs. Lovett in my schools production of this I asked the principle & he said yes but there is no killings in this version & I can't sing very well but I am perfect for the role so we will have Helena Bonham-Carter singing on a tape or something and I will lipsync (the whole thing was my idea)

He's COMPLETELY insane, but that what makes him SO genius and so amazing! :DD
@WeasleyIsOurKing5 they also have 2 children together Nell Burton (their daughter) Billy Ray Burton (their son) & they are bf & gf
He needs to invest in a brush.
