London director/animator/illustrator/maker Doug Hindson created his low-key (and appropriately) handmade grad film while studying illustration and animation at Kingston University, London to tackle the theme of "our increasing reliance on technology and the disconnect that often results." Doug Hindson: "This was to be the final film made as part of the degree course, so we all had pretty free reign over what happened. It felt like a chance to take some risks and try out some new techniques. "In terms of creative challenges, there is something very difficult about writing honestly about aspects of your own life. It's not so much the actual writing per se, but the realization this script will reflect back on you, that people will judge you based on the general thrust of the film. "I initially found it daunting when I had to read drafts of the script to people. Although the film is not strictly autobiographical, I was worried people would start to read into the film as following specific events in my own life. I'd like to think that it's more of an amalgamation of this generation's general malaise. "The main technical challenge on this project involved operating a camera and puppets at the same time. I was working on my own for most of the project, save for a few key people who helped out with a lot of particularly fiddly bits, mainly my very patient girlfriend Thea Glad. "This was a story I wanted to get off my chest, and now I feel ready to move on! That being said, I learnt a lot in the actual making of the film and would love to work with the same materials and techniques again. "Everything in the film was hand made from card and wood and captured in-camera. Hundreds of prop, background and character pieces had to be designed, cut, sanded and painted." Schedule: 12 weeks. Director/writer/designer: Doug Hindson Voiceover: Tom Hillenbrand Sound design: James Green Additional model making: Pedro Foppa Additional puppetry: Thea Glad, Matt King, Gus Scott, Sam Stobart, Imogen Woolley Thanks to: Martina Bramkamp, Geoff Grandfield, Chris Shepherd, family & friends
The short films, music videos and motion design you see on STASH, took a long time to produce. Show your appreciation to these incredible artists by "liking" them and sharing with your friends. Thanks!
