On this video I'm with my step Dad Garret and we are running "cans" for catfish. This is an old method used by locals where I'm from. Although this method can be done using just about anything, the term comes from the tactics origins, using metal paint cans. I hope y'all enjoy!

I'm 52 years old from East Alabama and was raised catfishing my whole life with my dad on the Chattahoochee River and surrounding lakes & Occasionally the Tallapoosa river & we always used trot lines. And my dad always had a commercial license and I have never even seen or heard of this. This is a cool and innovative way to fish.

The best part of this method is that you don't have to go out to check your buckets if you don't want to, and it don't matter either way 'cause they can get away if they want to.

My father and his buddies way back in the 1930's , 40's and 50's used 55 gallon drums. They knocked holes in them with railroad spikes and put them in the streams flowing out of the near by lakes.
In the morning they stand the drums up and let the water run out the holes.
Dad said that they would get 200 to three hundred catfish in one barrel.

Those fish are ideal size for eating. I used to go down and fish on the backwater of the Pearl River in southern Mississippi. We would fill two coolers with fish ready to cook in two days. We would bring it home in Illinois and have a giant fish fry in a small town. We would have the yard full of neighbors for Catfish dinner. They brought the fixings to go along with the fish.

Thank you for making and posting this video. I'm 54 an never seen fishing like this. I've fished my whole life, thinking we need bait to catch fish but now I learned we don't. You provide a place for the catfish to lay eggs and then you take the fish from the cans an let eggs hatch out an making more fish to replace the ones you take. This is in my opinion the absolute Best way to fish. Like dad said, if for any reason he is not able to run his lines the fish inside can leave after depositing the eggs and the babies hatch out an swim away ready for next two fish to get inside the cans. You provide a safe place for them to lay their eggs to keep other fish away from eating the babies also. It is a win win in cat fishing and I truly thank you for showing us all a better way of doing it. We don't hurt nor kill fish if we are not able to check our lines, that's awesome. Best video I seen this year. I am sharing this with all my friends and family. Even to ones who don't fish. Because I know they know people who do and this is by far the absolute best way of doing it. Thank you again and God bless you and us all.

Amazing, but I guess it only works when they are spawning. I've never fished much, but this looks like a ton of fun! I wonder if there are other ways to preserve catfish that would taste good. I wonder if they can be smoked or salted or both. I think I'll look into it. (Edited findings) I looked into it, and there are tons of ways to preserve the catch at home. Search smoking (NOT cold smoking) catfish. It looked really good! There must be precautions against parasites, because it seems like most catfish have them from what I found. After what I've seen I really don't believe I'll be trying catfish sashimi anytime soon. 🤢

An old-timer once told me when he was a kid they used those large metal milk cans to catch big flat heads, they would lay them alongside Bridge piers during the spawn.

Spent many days running trot lines with him. Probably my best quality time and memories with Dad. God bless! Never seen anyone bucket fishing before. New sub. God bless!

@@joybickerstaff194 in my opinion ...yes. They are better. It's like eating a crispy catfish like you would eat an ear of corn. Finger food. Once you eat a few you learn how to eat it down to a skeleton without getting a bone in your mouth.
They are very popular in fla especially around Lake Okeechobee.
Been eating them for 55 years

Trot-lines or any unattended lines are not allowed here, but I wonder what they would Game department would say to a hookless line. lol Great video. Thanks for sharing FT TV.

We had a catfish hatchery in North Florida. We used to put the metal milk jugs that folks used to put out the fresh milk for the trucks to pick up the milk from small producers. Put them in about three feet of water all around the 7 acre pond. The male catfish go find a female that is ready to lay eggs and chases her into the jug. She lays her eggs and then he stays in the jug to fertilize the eggs and then protect the eggs until they hatch. However, we would come along every day to check for eggs. You bend over and run your fist into the jug to feel for eggs. The male would bite you if he could. You put a black bucket down under the water and transfer the eggs to the black bucket and put them back into the boat keeping them out of the sun. The UV from the sunshine would kill the eggs. Then we took the eggs up to our hatchery where we put them into our hatching tanks which were open halves of fiberglass tanks split lengthways. We had home made paddles that we rigged up to an electric motor with gears and a spindle to move the paddles back and forth slowly to keep the eggs oxgenated until they hatched, usually about 3 days. The baby catfish live off of the shell of the eggs for a couple days and then you start feeding them 50% protein food after you have moved them to another none hatching tank. After they get to about 3 inches we haul them to our fingerling ponds and after equalizing the water temperature from the hauling water to the pond water we put them into the ponds where we continued to feed them regularly until they were about 5 inches or so or bigger and we would get orders for stocking ponds for people and seine up the fingerlings and sell them by the hundred. Of course we always gave good measure and put 110 instead of a hundred. I stocked many a pond around North Florida. It was cold in the water getting the eggs, too, mostly they layed in late February to about May when the temperatures rose. It was interesting. Women always thought the catfish had a good system, the female laid the eggs, then her work was done. The male stayed and protected the eggs and the babies until they were ready to survive on their own.
