Great personal first look Taetro thanks. It’s maybe worth noting that AKAI Professional is not a company but a brand that AKAI Electronics sold to InMusicBrands, Inc. of Cumberland, RI in 2005. InMusicBrands owns 20 brands including ones that would appear to be MIDI controller manufacturers competing with AKAI like M-Audio and Alesis. Those 20 brands are all owned by the same privately held company, InMusicBrands, Inc.
It is so good to see you getting the recognition you deserve from the industry and that you are doing it with integrity and hard work. I hope your career is long an prosperous.
This video really helped me decide whether to get this for my friend for finishing his grad program. I was trying to get him something versatile and that can be used as both a controller and standalone instrument, as he is someone who's main instrument is guitar but is now getting into music production. This seems perfect for it. Thanks so much!
Good review for a non-keyboard player like me. I've wanted a standalone mini keyboard, I once had (showing my age here) the Casio VL-tone and I loved it - even though it was monophonic, I loved the simplicity of it - I could play around with it anywhere, no external hardware (or computer, but this did predate the launch of the PC!) required. There has been some confusion on the Mini play, some sites indicate you can't play it without it being attached to a computer.
I purchased it today after watching your video. I love it, and its amazing for an on the go piece but... without that record feature sometimes you lose that spontaneous idea. SO PLEASE AKAI ADD A RECORD FEATURE ON THE NEXT ONE...
Everybody has a phone these days ,with a basic recording app you can use it to jot down your ideas ,then work on them later on. It’s a sketch pad that fits in your backpack
@taetro - have you noticed that you have to take the four knobs down to minimum before they pick up the values? Other issues included losing any changes you make eg slow Attack when you press the Drums button and then the Keys button. I reported these and a few other odd things to AKAI support. They tried them on their test model and said they were normal, but would add them to suggestions for new features.....
I've just bought one to augment my bass guitar in a band setup. running it into my Line 6 Helix setup so I can use the effect and routing options on that and then send the output to front of house. I wish it had a midi input so I could switch patches from the helix.
seeing this with the sp404 would be interesting. the collab i didn't know i needed this is probably the ideal keyboard for someone who doesn't always have access to a daw to put their ideas down, or just wants to practice some keys. i think the mpk mini play should be a bigger keyboard to better compliment having it's own sound bank. having a 49 key option to practice chords on these sounds would benefit akai imo
I use mine for basic Demos. Im not the keyboard player. Perfect for writing keyboard lines on my hard drive digital recorder. Wonderful for my mini studio.
Love your videos! It fair to say mini usb keyboards align with vendor’s DAW. For MPC Beats, Akai is great. For Ableton or Logic, you can’t top the out-of-box integration of the Novation LaunchKey MK3. If you’re bought into the Arturia Analog Lab or V Collection, Arturia controllers are great and M-Audio is trying to do everything but has some strength with Logic. Beginners should consider which vendor is going to provide support them with bundled software, training and tech support when they need help 😎

I think there are more differences, I researched it a few weeks back (this keyboard has been out for a few months in Japan) and I think the pads in the mpk mini play don’t send CC messages, when the standard model does, and I remember there is at least one thing more with the function buttons. I ended up getting the standard controller, which comes with very rough settings for the pad sensitivity (almost unusable for me) you can change the settings but there is no easy and clear instructions on how to do it or recommended alternative settings you could refer to, so unless you know what you’re doing you’ll be in the hands of a very few unknown youtubers who have approached the subject so far.

TAETRO - Great video and very informative. Just discovered your channel about a week ago after starting researching the Akai MPK mini mk3.. Was just down in the Keys and watched a guitarist who incorporated an Akai Mini (not sure which model) into his live performance (Shout out to Rob Benton!!! Awesome performance). This leads me to a question - Which model is best suited to be integrated into a live performance? The Mini Play MK3 or the Mini MK3? Looking at the specs of the Mini MK3, it does not look like it has a headphone jack to allow it to be connected to a PA/Amp... Am I right or wrong? Any thoughts or input would be appreciated..
Great review, thank you! Just one thing I still don't know so let me ask you ... Is it possible to use pads for drums and keys for sounds (e.g. for bass line) simultaneously?
Hi! I think to purchase this keyboard this week for me and my son. Just 1 question, is it possible to import new instruments inside the keyboard or just possible with the computer MPC Beats or Ableton or both ? - Thanks

Yea so much they could do to make this the go to controller. A step sequence. Actually make good use of the screen. A micro and card slot with something like 40 seconds sample time like the pocket operator KO and the ability to sample directly into it. Like idk what sales were like for the last version of the play but idk why they decided to revamp this one and do so little. The mpk mark 3 made sense though.

Could you make a review on the new Nektar Impact LX mini vs the Akai Mpk mini? It would be really helpful, there's no much info out there. Have a nice day!!
I've already mentioned this on the campaign video, but I feel like if this was meant to be the budget bridge to MPC One/Live - Akai should have started by subtracting features from those devices to reduce the price, instead of adding features onto a 2 octave controller and ending up with what is really just a Casiotone with modern sounds and usb midi. Can't add sounds, can't record or sequence, can't connect through bluetooth - a device that's neither here nor there. All Akai had to do was take One and reduce the number of pads down to 9, decrease screen size, and lower the internal storage. Keep BT, SD slot, audio-in, and all the internal software.
Add a $50 MIFI dongle and you have what you're looking for. As for stripping features off the MPC One, ok then... where's the product for people looking for what that product does? NOTHING the MPC One does would be possible to run on 4 AA batteries btw.
@@Taetro no lol just heard DjAve saying it on his live. I also saw that you can adjust the BPMs aswell. I love me mini play MKII. I really don’t see much of a difference SOFAR Except for the change of the buttons they click like the older MPCs or the MPC ONe also you Don’t have to hold down note repeat for the drum pads And the last key instead of it being swing64% they added Sync? We shall see. Amazing video and congrats dude.
You could pair it with a $99 Arturio Beatstep to add sequencing. Alternatively you could buy the competing product that runs on AA batteries, has built in sounds, and a sequencer. Let us know when that product comes out cuz currently I don't think there is one.

Can u hook this up to a guitar amp?
Yes
Oh yay the update.
Man this thing would be a fun little machine If only this had a sequencer for those built in sounds. That’s a pass for me
I agree......a sequencer would be great even if it increased cost a bit
I heard it does have a sequencer built in it.
@@nap41123 im sure what you heard is much more reliable than me, a person with the device working directly with the brand, is telling you
@@Taetro no lol just heard DjAve saying it on his live.
Can you hook up a microphone to this and sing as you play?
Can you record beats on this thing, and then put them on your computer?
No
Dang wish this had 3/4 octaves, a bigger speaker and a looper. Would be perfect.
And MIDI OUT
What would be really cool is if Akai would allow you to use a SD card and bring in One Shots and use them?
Pads are sensitive than normal mk3? Cuz normal mk3 pads are pretty shitty i feel latency than other pads
the pads on both this and mk3 are good. latency has nothing to do with the pads
Nick Taetro 💥🔥👏🤝🤝
Akai probably needs more competition
What happened to MK2?!
your on the ableton website
Needs a basic drum sequencer!
