I've got a dozen brand new frames and forks made by Jack Taylor of Stockton on tees. The last old fasioned hand made bespoke cycle manufacturer. I was a fire fighter and salvaged them when the workshop burned down. We were told to help ourselves as he was retiring. I have never got round to doing anything with them but the workmanship is amazing.
I agree , I've been saying myself that a lot of things we're suffering from now are down to brexit . The bike industry is no different , the problem is no one wants to admit brexit the root cause of virtually all our manufacturing woes .
Around 40 years ago (before I moved to Sweden) I cycled on a Raleigh from Colchester to Gothamburg. The gears disintegrated in Germany and the saddle collapsed in Denmark. I still have the bike 😁 🇸🇪🇪🇺.
Most of those bikes sold during the pandemic are stowed away in the UK. Just a few places where the infrastructure is up to scratch. I would not ride my bike in the UK, non of the three I own. The drivers actually see themselves as guardians of the road. So cycling isn't allowed in their eyes.😢
Actually, when biking picked up in Glendale, CA, I'm ashamed to say I found myself having homicidal thoughts. No more...but driving psychology is weird and dangerous.
We would need to invite qualified staff from Europe to make thes parts, they won't come, we can't afford EU quality parts, so we get rubbish from China and India. Then we can't export it to Europe because the add duty to foriegn junk.
It can be dangerous. I have a friend who is a mountain biker who was trying a 'premium' bike, which turned out was assembled in the EU from imported from Asia parts. A weld on the frame gave out and he went head over heels over the handlebars. Brand and where it was assembled mean nothing if they are just using poor quality materials. So many companies live off of name and reputation these days, while cutting costs by using mass produced, cheap parts which they at one point used to manufacture themselves..@@dantownsend4246
"It's both alarming and disheartening to witness the UK's economic performance compared to some other Western countries. This unfortunate situation is mostly due to Brexit and the incompetence of government officials. Meanwhile, in the US, companies are thriving and constructing new manufacturing facilities, whereas all we hear about the UK is how businesses are shutting down or contemplating relocating to either the EU or North America. And the growth forecast for the UK isn't good at all. Hopefully, after the elections, a new government may come into power with some better ideas on how to govern the UK.
Here in San Bernardino, California, massive new Amazon warehouses and other companies are being constructed. There's HUGE investment here. Don't know what's up with the UK.
@garryferrington811 Same here in the Milwaukee/Chicago metropolitan area. Major corporations are building massive warehouse distribution centers here. One company in my area alone has nearly built 17 million sq,ft. of warehouse space in my town. Amazon has also constructed over 3 million sq,ft. of warehouse space in my town. We also have an explosion of new retail stores building up in my town. Plus, we have a ton of new restaurants moving in. The towns north and west of me are also seeing new growth. Crazy growth here. 🙂
A lot of bike firms are struggling because they increased production during the pandemic when bikes were flying off the shelves, but post-covid, they were left with loads of unsold stock when the boom ended and the bottom fell out of the market. Pretty predictable that the boom wouldn't last, but they all fell for the hype. 🤦
I have no doubt that UK manufacturers face serious obstacles due to Brexit but I must make the point that worldwide there is a shakedown going on in the bike industry. I follow procyling (road, CX, MTB) as a sport and for well over a year there have been predictions of overcapacity. A few years ago due to a high profile of cycling from new online channels and in the Olympics etc a whole lot of new bike manufacturers set up often making highly specialised bikes out of more exotic materials. Quite a lot of these new entrants are British based and traditional manufacturers like Raleigh have faced massive competition.
My red and gold Raleigh Clubman (Frame W602816 Worksop Factory Number 2816), now fully rigged for long-distance touring, was made in 1980. With over 150,000 miles already under it's wheels, why do I need to buy a new bike?
I think that Henry Cole may have bought it recently - too late, as always with Henry, because the market forthese bikes has 'topped out' some time ago. Happy cycling,@@bakedbean37
The Tories and the "green shoots of growth" they've been saying that for nearly 14 years now the thing has just withered away and is dying because they've not looked after it.
Bike industry collapsing?! Micro mobility is the thing that everyone is talking about. E-bikes are huge thing and I just love ❤️ mine. There is huge boom with bikes 🙄
The truth the UK is heading towards failed state status. There isn't an industry, or public service that isn't failing. IMF application may be the least of the UK's worries.
Raleigh Nottingham no more, completely. Saturday Night, Sunday Morning movie intro, Albert Finney saying don't let the bastards grind you down at his turner machine, at Raleigh's Nottingham.
So, $nake wants us to trust in him. Reminds me of the original Disney version of jungle book and the character Kaa’s song “Trust in me, just in me”, sung by Sterling Holloway. Kaa, as you will recall, is also a snake, a python, a constrictor, and not to be trusted.
I believe they have had numerous non UK owners. Raleigh can't live on its brand name from the past when there is good quality cheaper brands on the market.
The UK is suffering time for people to ask why ? We know why . Stay well Marcus always enjoy your work.
Will do my friend xx 🤠

Bicycle retailer here. Definite divide at the Liz Truss period. So much worse now.

It is too dangerous to ride a bicycle where I live in Britain too many pot holes and too many mad/bad drivers who need a guide dog.

I watch a 24 hours in the A&E tv program. The car or bus vs. bike injuries in London are horrific...
Unfortunately true
Totally different attitude to bicycles here in France.
Looking chilly there Marcus.Had a few flakes of snow here in Saintes but now gone.
Keep warm 👍
@@jonross545 yes presumed liability helps!
Actually, when biking picked up in Glendale, CA, I'm ashamed to say I found myself having homicidal thoughts. No more...but driving psychology is weird and dangerous.
If you are going to charge a premium, don't just assemble bikes from cheap, generic made in China parts. Make the parts yourself...
We would need to invite qualified staff from Europe to make thes parts, they won't come, we can't afford EU quality parts, so we get rubbish from China and India. Then we can't export it to Europe because the add duty to foriegn junk.
Complete with the best. Don’t try to see who can get the best deal on Chinese parts

Very few Chinese made bicycles sold in Europe by major brands, there's a little bit of shimano in China, but elsewise this is largely untrue

Hi Marcus, Hattons model railway shop in Liverpool is also on its way out , been established since the 1940's .

Bike prices these days ..smh.. no wonder they can't get them sold, no wonder criminals are out in droves.....
The Tories and the "green shoots of growth" they've been saying that for nearly 14 years now the thing has just withered away and is dying because they've not looked after it.
Is this a Brexit bonus, remember a Tory saying you should get on your bike, this was during the thatcher regime, think his name was tebbit,
The only recent showing with Rushi Sunak was his body language, with the audience flapping his arms around!
The prices they want for new road bikes is also ridiculous. All the kids want e-bikes (the better to go way too fast without a helmet), too.
Bike industry collapsing?! Micro mobility is the thing that everyone is talking about. E-bikes are huge thing and I just love ❤️ mine. There is huge boom with bikes 🙄
Demographics are destiny and I think we are in a fourth turning event.
The truth the UK is heading towards failed state status.
There isn't an industry, or public service that isn't failing.
IMF application may be the least of the UK's worries.
There's also a story about British Corner Shop going bust which needs telling.
I'll have a look xx
Going out for a Chinese meal in France? You’ll cause a riot!
Don't worry. Sunak said the UK will be "the new Silicon Valley." Not sure when he's going to get moving on that, but that's what he said.
I forgot about that 🤦♂️

Enjoy the new year
i shall keep my holdsworth then i thought Raleigh had moved a lot of production to china years ago
Did Raleigh Bikes get taken over by a China-based company a number of years ago?
I believe they have had numerous non UK owners. Raleigh can't live on its brand name from the past when there is good quality cheaper brands on the market.
