  • The MP 40 (Maschinenpistole 40) was a submachine gun chambered for the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge. It was developed in Nazi Germany and used extensively by the Axis powers during the Second World War.
    Designed in 1938 by Heinrich Vollmer with inspiration from its predecessor the MP 38, it was heavily used by infantrymen (particularly platoon and squad leaders), and by paratroopers, on the Eastern and Western Fronts. Its advanced and modern features made it a favorite among soldiers and popular in countries from various parts of the world after the war. It was often erroneously called "Schmeisser" by the Allies, despite Hugo Schmeisser's non-involvement in the weapon's design and production. From 1940 to 1945, an estimated 1.1 million were produced by Erma Werke.

    Cheap to manufacture, relatively simple & therefor reliable easy to maintain (in the field) most users felt comfortable with it. Therefor one of the best 'all rounders' surely, which can still hold it's own against many moderns !

      The low rate of fire of 500-550 rounds per minute allows firing in single mode with a short and quick pull of the trigger.

      The bolt is attached to a three piece telescopic recoil spring assembly that made the gun a bit longer than most linear designed mp's like the Sten or Carl Gustav for instance, but also worked as a shock absorber as some air pressure developed during recoil. Interestingly the bolt doesn't travel so far back as to hit the rear of the tube making this a very soft recoiling, controllable and relatively accurate gun. Reportedly, an experienced operator could hit man sized targets out to 250 meters with an MP40.

      DarkLightGamer
      Open bolt weapons can be much shorter like an Israeli Uzi or an italian Beretta PM12S, modern open bolts have what's called a telescoping bolt, meaning that excess mass meant to make the fire rate controllable as intended by design is shaped to warp around the barrel rather than being all behind the chamber.
      WWII and 50' SMGs just are very simple and not explored to their potential, Hugo Schmeisser just made his MP-38/40 so long for that in built buffer system of the bolt.

    I dont really understand how works the firing pin. It works on inertia? I gess that is the bolt that is pushed by the recoil spring and the firing pin group is pulled bi it....that IF is an inertial one.
    Can somebody explain how it works? i dont think fixed firing pins are safe enought.

    • @bluecaptainIT
      @bluecaptainIT 6 років тому +1

      Tanktastic08 it was actually designed by the Germans, back then it was called 9mm Luger
      It still has the same specification and measurements of the Parabellum, but I'm not sure about the grains and stopping power.
      Basically, they kept the 9x19 and changed the name

      Thanks

    • @chapiit08
      @chapiit08 6 років тому +1

      Because it was effective and simple, low cost submachine guns could be made to fire it. To this day the 9mm is the most widely fielded caliber particularly in sidearms but also some subguns like the H&K MP5 are still in use by military forces around the world in limited numbers. The subgun lost ground as a mass fielded weapon when armies started to issue body armor to their personnel and rifles chambered for intermediate calibers like the 7.62x39 and the 5.56x45 became widespread.

    • @bluecaptainIT
      @bluecaptainIT 6 років тому

      chapiit08 Exactly.
      Some new design like the new cartridge of the MP7 and the 5,7x28mm for both P90 and Five-seveN might re-enlight the SMGs in modern combat, having both a powerful stopping power that surpasses the Parabellum

      Don't even mention that piece of junk of the Sten Gun.
      But the US Thompson, although high quality and very reliable, was freaking heavy (about 4 kilos, more than a modern assault rifle), and had an overkill fire rate (800RPM) which coupled with a very potent round (.45ACP/Auto) made it completely uncontrollable for someone not very experienced with it.
      On the other side, the MP-40 required minimal effort to shoot it accurately and had enough stopping power to do what it was meant to do, while also being lighter.
