From the latter part of the eighties till the late night, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit made up a couple as popular as the pair of Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Dharmendra-Hema Malini or Uttam Kumar-Suchitra Sen - Tezaab, Parinda, Beta, Ram Lakhan, and Jamai Raja being just a few of their hits. Their last screen outing together was in Rajkumar Santoshi's Pukar in 2000. No wonder then that Indra Kumar's Total Dhamaal, which brings Madhuri and Anil together after almost 20 years, is so special for their fans. "I think this is my 18th film with Anilji if I am not mistaken. It is wonderful coming back together. The synergy is the same. For me also it is a 'let your hair down' kind of comedy and I have not done that in a while. It is all just total dhamaal," gushed the 51 year Madhuri. Does the hype scare her? "Luckily our past record has been very good. So, us coming together has only made people happy!" she said. Unlike their earlier films though, Total Dhamaal does not quite feature Anil and Madhuri as two people in love. "People have seen us pining for each other, romantic. But in this film, we are at loggerheads with each other and we hate each other. We are married and unhappy. So that is the whole relationship throughout the movie. There are a lot of moments which are funny because of what we are going through," the actor told The Woods. But things were not always funny. Anil and Madhuri's first film together did not even see the light of day. "The first film I shot with Anilji was called Bajrangi. It was being directed by Mr Bapu, who had directed Prem Pratigya. And I remember something went wrong and the film did not get made. We did shoot for a song. That was the first time I shot with him and then I did Hifazat with him....," Madhuri recalled. The two became pretty thick as friends over the years. "There wasn't any instant connect. We were costars and as we worked, did the song, we got to know each other a little bit. We found we are the same kind of people. We are hard working and very conscientious, on time, and disciplined. And we gelled over these things. In time, we bonded...." she said. Have things changed since they first started working together? "We laugh now talking about the stuff back then. We talk about how we used to jump around onscreen and today we all are so careful. At that time there was little bit of recklessness and we used to give it all in the songs and action scenes. Times have changed... He still has the same energy. It is funny because that's how we know him and I know that is never going to change. "He is going to be the same person.
