This sounds nothing like Metallica or the S&M session. This has a lot of post processing for one, so it's been produced in a studio. The distortion in the guitars is far more grainy than anything Metallica have used, and as a lot of people have mentioned there is a keyboard involved in most of the "orchestral" parts which you won't find in any symphony orchestra.
I have this on a cd I burned like 20yrs ago, from downloads I found. Just found the cd and started listening again, brought me here to find out who it was. I wasnt sure if it was Scorpions, or Metallica.
Okay, I've figured this out now. This IS the Trans-Siberian Orchestra WITHOUT Metallica. Metallica has only played with one orchestra and that's the San Francisco Orchestra back in 1999. They have their album called S&M, which I own, and this song is not on there. If Metallica had made a cover of it, it woulda been on one of their albums, recorded live by someone, or a single. The guitarists that played in the TSO are Alex Skolnick from Testament and Chris Caffery from Savatage. This is NOT Metallica OR Megadeth OR Epica. This is, as far as I can tell, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's doing. If you listen to their other songs they've done, like Beethoven's 5th and Carol of the Bells, then you can hear the same style. If you compare it to Epica's version you can definitely tell that it is not Epica's either. I could not find a shred of anything on Megadeth playing with a symphony or orchestra at all but as I am not a massive Megadeth fan I could be wrong. But I do know Megadeth and know that this is not their style either.This could be a different artist, seeing that I couldn't find any hard evidence of confirmation that TSO did this song, but from what I can tell it is them. I know for sure that this is not Metallica or Megadeth or Epica. Please like this comment so others can see and stop fussing about it. It's a great arrangement for the song I think and sounds epic. Alas it is not Metallica, Megadeth, or Epica. If someone has hard evidence proving me right or wrong I would love to see it and would appreciate a link to follow.
Just because its not on the Album doesnt mean they didnt do it at the same time as SnM. Adding it to the album would require licensing if available and its probably costly. However you are correct that this is not Metallica, this song has been going around labelled as Metallica since bloody Napster days, same with 'Kill the Wabbit', 'Carol of the Bells' (really xmas in Sarajevo), 'Sleeping Peace', 'Buried Alive' (Merciful Fate song) 'Hunger' (Eternal Decision) and a whole host of other songs that were commonly found on the old sharing networks.
