An Electric Guitar that's older than Rock-n-Roll! A reminder that Leo Fender's original target market was Jazz, Hillbilly (and I use the term with the greatest respect), and Western Swing players.
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar Actually, there's a great book by Forrest White, the original Fender Plant Manager, called "Fender, The Inside Story" that documents that Leo Fender copied a number of design ideas from a one off guitar built by Paul Bigsby. There's a photo of Bigsby's guitar in the book too. It's a great book that debunks a lot of stories dreamed up by others who never worked for or with Leo Fender.
I just enjoy watching people play these guitars because I know I'll never get a chance to own one. Crazy to think, this guitar is over 4 times older than me and still looks and sounds that good.
My favorite part of any Norm video is the greeting. "Hey everybody, it's Norm OVER HERE." It's the "over here" that I love. I don't know why, but I just love that. The great content ain't bad either. Thanks, Norm!
I feel privileged to have played the heck out of my uncles broadcaster. It was giving to him by the family friend who lived in a house at the end of our driveway. Their kids and us kids all played together. Me and my uncle Jim where called Jimmy and Johnny. The gifter r.i.p. Gloria told us to come over she has something for Jimmy. She handed it to him from out of her closet. It was all painted black. Including the headstock. Had a white pearl like pickguard( probably hand made). Bridge cover was already off. Excitedly we took it down to the garage. And lightly sanded off the black paint on the headstock. First we saw Fender appear. Yay we thought. Then Broadcaster, we looked at each other,,,huh. Never heard of it. He still has that guitar. We took turns playing it for a long time. True story .
The little solder blob in the ashtray was used to fix a piece of wire for the galvanization process, dipping it into the copper/ nickel / chrome plating bath.
OH MY SAINTED AUNT!! What a treat to be able to play such a rare instrument, Michael! You are truly the lucky one! I feel so sorry for Norm having to part with this absolute treasure, so commiserations, Norm! But as you so rightly said, you at least have the assurance that it is going to the right person, none other than our favourite Blues/Rock guitarist, Joe Bonamassa! You know that he will look after it and I hope we'll see him wail away on it at some stage in the future. Thanks for filming this historical gem for us, Jen! We can get to drool over it as much as we like to. 😅
Michael Lemmo…representin’ my beloved city of Philadelphia (well, actually, I grew up in South Jersey, but it’s all the same). And I’m a diehard, lifelong Flyers fan! Knew there’s something extraordinarily special about you Michael, aside from your masterful playing. 😉 Honestly, you have a very special gift, and that is your ability to instinctively draw out the specialness and unique quality of every guitar you play. Hang on to this guy, Norm!
This guitar is gorgeous almost mint condition if not par excellent quality...it will be in good hands again so it can sing like it was meant to be !!!! Thanks to Norm for sharing and Lemmo for sharing your talents to this beauty.
Leo Fender would be proud...That amazing workhorse could totally do metal too 🙂🙂 I often use my Teles and Esquires in my metal band because they cut through the mix like no other guitar would... The fact that it's a "senior" guitar and it still sounds like that speaks volumes about its design...
That was a fantastic demo Lemmo...what a stellar example of Broadcaster !!! Thank you Norm for being the custodian all these years and passing it on to another great custodian in Joey B ... thanks Jen !!!
The solder on the ash tray is how they attached the wire to hang the part in the tank for nickel plating. Most parts have a convenient place to attach wire such as holes, etc. When a part is shaped such that it isn't easy to hang with wire often times soldering a wire to the part in an inconspicuous spot is the best way to maintain the electrical connection which is necessary when electroplating any part. Simply breaking off the wire after the plating is finished leaves a small spot of solder.
It's such a privilege to see one of these extremely rare axes in a video but to see it also played with the greatest respect is majestic. To go to JB is the best new home I can think of. John5 would be 2nd. Happy birthday, JB. Thank you, Norm, for sharing. Nice job, Jen & Lemmo. You should never do a vid without some snippet of EVH.
Michael Benson\Van Halen\Clapton sure is a lucky 🍀 guy! While Norm’s adopted Nephew Joe just happens to be lucky too, and also to afford that treasure. I’ve liked watching all the episodes of GOTD for years now. How about a AOTD electric and acoustic or EOTD, like an Ibanez tube screamer?
This little blonde lady has been sat there waiting to be played for 74 years. Listen to her sing, so smooth sounding (great demo Lemmo), I can hear why she means so much to Norm. What a guitar!
Unreal tone. It’s “it”. “The sound.” Tasty playing, Lemmo has those little touches down that really make the songs. Next time wedge the in-between sound! Love to hear it on the real ones!
Sad to see all of Norm's guitar being sold off. I know his health is poor, and he's setting his family up financially, but it's hard to watch. We should all appreciate Norm, not only for his contributions to the music world, but also for his enormous efforts in helping the community, especially the homeless. You're a great Man Norm!! The world needs more people like you!
I just picked up an American Vintage 2 51 Telecaster. It is the best guitar I ever played. A close second is my 2014ish MIM 72 Thinline Telecaster reissue and it is a total sleeper gem.
Love Michael's playing! He's got such a great feel. I would not be surprised if some great artist will come by and snatch him up for recordings and touring. He is Spectacular. Love all of Michael's demos.
Same age as me, but has aged a lot better! Great that it is going to Joe, he'll be an excellent custodian. And Norm, you are looking good, keep up the great work!
I did some research about the history and evolution of the electric guitar years ago and therefore just seeing this thing through a screen makes my so happy… this is a piece of history here
OMG is right. Mr Lemmo, that was really, really good. You always bring out the best in those older Fender masterpieces. Gotta listen to that ZZTop riff again!
I love to hear those really old electrics being played hard, to hear what they are capable of, even though at the time they were made, as Marty McFly said, "you guys aren't ready for that yet, but your kids are gonna love it!"
Awesome. I just read "The Birth of Loud" all about Leo Fender and Les Paul and the invention of solid body guitars and the author goes over the whole Broadcaster/Telecaster naming issue.
That Broadcaster is one of the best-sounding guitars I’ve ever heard. It helps that Lemmo’s playing it! And it’s as old as I am, or I’m as old as it is…It’s just as well that I don’t have Joe Bonamassa’s budget, because I’d have to change the wiring to the post-‘67 modern setup, and I couldn’t justify modding a piece of history like that. I’d do it to a reissue in a heartbeat, as I don’t want the preset dark circuit, but not on an original!
This is the greatest solid body electric guitar in the world for all time. It's as important as the first Paul A. Bigsby, Lester's Log as well as the bursts, The Beauchamp Electros... frying pan... but it's also the best sounding solidbody guitar in the universe regardless of style or type of amplifier. This video is special due to the great musical choices ... beautifully performed by Dizzy Lemmo
Man, that dark neck pickup is amazing. I want to do a parts caster, but I love these broadcasters, so I'd love to set it up like this because of how nice they sound. My wife even likes the sound because it reminds her of hozier when he uses hallow or semi hallow body guitars.
My favourite iteration of a broad/No/telecaster. The butterscotch with black guard. Can't afford treasures like this, so I'll make do with my original CV Tele
My what a beautiful guitar. Amazing how much that looks like a Tele just coming off the line in Corona. I'll guarantee you won't find another one that nice. Michael: tell Norm the solder pin drop on the bridge cover is IMO, for making sure the cover is grounded to the controls and pickups
Thank you Mike Lemmo for not playing standard rehash blues licks- it's a breath of fresh air for guitar demos! Sounds great!
Leo Fender got it so right in 1950 and then again in 1954. Timeless designs of utmost utility and musicality.
Only thing that he should've done different was put the truss rod at the headstock. Everything else is fine.
The pickup selector modes were useless in this version
Literally nailed it on the first try. Amazing instrument.
@@MrJohnr47 not sure you know what “literally” means. What nails are there in this guitar?
Agreed, it is crazy how versatile a 73 year old guitar is across eras of music that didn't even exist at that time.

4:02 the solder on the ashtray was to solder a wire to the ashtray for the chrome plating process.
Interesting. I would’ve never thought of that
Thanks! That is what I thought of, but didn't know for sure.
Yep, we used to do the same when we used to powder coat certain items years ago.
That bridge pick up is so vocal I swear it knows the lyrics to "Sharp Dressed Man". Amazing playing, Michael.
That is where it all started, right there, THAT guitar! amazing! 73 years ago, it was perfect right out of the gate! Leo Fender was a genius!
Well that’s it. The original electric guitar. Still holds up to this day, sounds great.
Definitely not the original electric guitar. Not even the first solid body electric
@@roycedot First one anybody knows about.

What an amazing sound from an historic guitar. Mike is a player worthy of such a guitar.

I just enjoy watching people play these guitars because I know I'll never get a chance to own one. Crazy to think, this guitar is over 4 times older than me and still looks and sounds that good.
It’s as old as I am, but it’s in much better shape!
Yeah, but you can buy a Broadcaster pickup and use videos like this to see how close you can get. Probably spot on with acceptable variation
My favorite part of any Norm video is the greeting. "Hey everybody, it's Norm OVER HERE." It's the "over here" that I love. I don't know why, but I just love that. The great content ain't bad either. Thanks, Norm!
Always struck me as a little odd, but it's definitely his signature intro. Quirky and uniquely his!
What a beautiful guitar, such a historical piece but I’m glad it’ll be going to someone who will play it so it doesn’t just gather dust.

I wonder what song it was? Tried Google music, couldn't match it. Excellent tune for certain.
@@drewdietz2115 I believe its "Take Five" by Paul Desmond and commonly known from Dave Brubeck

Broadcaster had a blend control so you could blend neck and bridge pickup together, as desired, BRILLIANT idea that was discontinued in 1952.
