    I bought a Hartwood Novella jazz box a year ago (250 quid) and it is surprisingly good, I tend to use it everyday in accoustic mode but I enjoy using the humbuckers through my Peavey Audition 110 amp.

    Thanks for the demo while you have this. I too am skeptical about ceramic humbuckers, but your Hartwood sounds pretty good. Sadly, no Hartwoods in Canada and shipping from EU/UK these days is a pita. Awesome for John, Michael and other supporters to donate these to Zoey's! Note that Harley Benton has an access plate on their Aeolus.

    Hi John, I had one of these a few years ago, as you say, quite a nice instrument for the money. I only sold because my wife got me an Ibanez AS93 for Christmas last year; over twice the price but really in another league, in tone and construction. You should try one if you get the chance, it gives the real thing a good run for the money.
    As an aside the Scottish luthier you mentioned is probably Mike Vanden , exquisite guitars ( at exquisite prices) . I stayed somewhere near his workshop whilst on holiday about 30 odd years ago but didn’t have the nerve to ask if I could have a look round.
    Love the channel keep up the good work!

    Ordered my lefty HB35plus in cherry a month ago. I added their least expensive double humbucker Tele as the shipping was the same. (I intend this guitar to teach me about modding and fret filing, etc.) You and Jonny at the Budget Guitar Show keep giving me GAS!

    I have a HB 335 in cherry red, its a bit heavier than i anticipated , but a change of my prefered strings and its spot on, the pick ups pack a punch through my Vox VT 20, always loved the shape and versatility of the 335 style guitars

    I have still have a soft spot for my 88 marlin sidewinder - out the back in the compost patch...
    To be fair g4m seems to have upped their game recently with the hartwood stuff - trying to compete with HB I think- they have a lovely resonator that I like the look of, and a clone of the blues junior amp in British racing green that looks great fir less than 300 quid - how it sounds is the only question. Great vid, John, I enjoyed that.

    My wonderful kids are buying me a Gear 4 Music strat copy with dual humbuckers, I'm pretty excited. They also do a tele copy in purple, I believe it's called 'space burst' but it has a humbucker in the bridge and a P90 in the neck for less than £200

    Grabbed a Oscar Schmidt Delta King off ebay for $57. Missing everything but the Grover tuners. I believe that someone decided to change out everything and well it comes out easier than it goes back.

    I’ve got a Hartwood Revival Semi Acoustic Vibrato in burnt orange.
    It’s basically the same as Johns but with a Bigsby £249.00 new from Gear4Music.
    It’s a excellent guitar 😎👌👍

    Hi John. After watching a few of your great videos, I decided to become a patreon. However, the cookies window comes up and when I select 'REJECT ALL' it does not accept it and the window just remains on screen blocking everything else. Perhaps I am doing something wrong? For now I have withdrawn from the site. Regards Chris Grant

    Lovely instrument!
    Although I like the sound of hollow body‘s, as a short guy the wider body keeps me from getting one. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I would rather like to see a access plate on the lower outer edge (like on flying V‘s), than on the back. A clean back has a very pleasant appeal.
    Cheers, Rudy

    Not tried a Hartwood or any of the more expensive Gear4music brands but have tried some of the Gear4music branded acoustics and they were excellent for the price (particularly the 12 string). My HB 35+ plus might not be AAAA but it’s not that far off (but I think I may just have got lucky)..

    Gibson ES 320 in the 1970s had a thing like a telecaster control plate for the electrics. Presumably didn't sell.

    Sam Deeks has done a rewrite and setup of one of these guitars recently.
    Worth a watch if you want to see what a nightmare working on electro acoustic 335 style guitars can be 🤣😂

    I'd plump for an Artist at this ballpark. Their Bullbucker pickups are really good and the build quality isn't half bad. Roller bridge, ebony board and locking tuners to boot.

    I would never be able to cut an access point in the back of a Gibson ( or buy one in the first place ) , however, It would be an easy thing to do on a sub $300 Guitar. I would either do it or even pay someone to do it.. meaning paying someone to install new pick ups without a new access point... eh. It's not like you ruin the resale value by making an access point on the back OF THIS GUITAR.

    I’ve got a few, Gibson 355, Ibanez as53 and 73, Harley Benton 35+. All great guitars, but for the money my Greg Bennett Royal is stunning, even against he Custom Shop 355.
    Not kidding about that. The Ibanez are always great, and the HB 35+ is unbeatable for the money, especially if you enjoy tinkering and upgrading

    There is a truth that at some point having a crap guitar will hold you back on your learning,back in the day we reached that point far quicker than todays learners,not l hasten to add because we were avid scholars, we just had s__t guitars.

    The Epiphone " Inspired by Gibson " ES335 is an exceptional guitar and, at around £450, it is an absolute steal. I recently bought one as the lead guitar player in my band advised me to grab one if I was looking for a great 335... and he really knows his guitars. I also saw a blind test with Lee Anderton playing the Inspired By Gibson Epiphone ES335 as well as his own Gibson ES335 and he couldn't tell the difference between the two in, either feel or sound. I guess that says an awful lot about the guitar ( or maybe Lee Anderton lol ) ... oh, and I had the Bigsby version of this Hartwood guitar a while back and it is a very good guitar for the money.

      How does it compare with the Epiphone Dot of the past? I had one of those back in the day and still regret letting it go.

    • @PeteAxeShields
      @PeteAxeShields 2 роки тому +1

      @@fretworkband3204 In my opinion, it is a lot better. The pickups are an improvement, the bound fingerboard, more authentic pick guard ( and its attachment - and no Epiphone " E " logo ) and the Kalamazoo headstock all make for a great replica of the " real thing " I can speak for my own and my pal, Ryan's , in saying it is the best representation, and closest to the Gibson ES335 I have ever played. It's a belter of a guitar. Mine and Ryan's are both in the Vintage Sunburst finish. - this one : ua-cam.com/video/kD3KsDNb8jE/v-deo.html

    I'd really recommend an Ibanez AS73 for an affordable semi hollow like that, they're $500 bran' new w the fancy veneers. They can really handle pretty high gain shit, especially if ya got a gate! Killer axes, mines been thoroughly gigged and has held up for almost 3yrs very well.

    • @jimmyjames2022
      @jimmyjames2022 2 роки тому +1

      Yah I've been pondering one of these AS73 ($730CAD) or AS93 ($950CAD) as more a 339 size rather than a 335 size. In Canada can't buy the Hartwood and Harley Benton is a pain to ship here. Epi 339 maybe but I think Ibanez is better QC and I can try before buy in a local store.

    • @leightnite3056
      @leightnite3056 2 роки тому +1

      @@jimmyjames2022 I think they're definitely better than the epi's fo sho. The pup's are great as well, I've done 14 hours stagetime a week w it and it holds it down! Bar gig or church gig, it does both nicely! Plus the green gradation finish I got is an eyeball catcher and showstopper!

    It doesn't get much more annoying than having to fish wires and pots through an F hole. I always thought it would be easier to access and not so obvious if there were a panel on the side of the guitar below the knob positions. I'm convinced that part of the next surgery I perform on that guitar will include such an access point cut by myself.

    You are very dramatic when it comes to switching from electronics to hollowbody guitars. It's not that complicated, you just have to have a little patience and determination. It's nothing to write home about.
