  • A selection of mystical poems rendered by Daniel Ladinsky in the style of Hafiz from Daniel Ladinsky's book - "The Gift" .
*** Please be aware of the issue around Daniel Ladinsky's renderings of "Hafiz." According to Omid Safi, (Islamic Studies Professor at Duke University), Ladinsky's poems "have no earthly connection to what the historical Hafiz of Shiraz, the Persian sage, ever said. He is making it up. He admitted that they are not "translations", or "accurate", or has any knowledge of Persian in his 1996 book "I heard God laughing." Ladinsky actually states that Hafez appeared to him in a dream and handed him the ENGLISH “translations” he’s publishing."
Please also see the Wikipedia entry on the translation issue here:

I sat in meditation under an oak tree over looking a lake. I heard a tall brown grass rustle in my right ear. I opened my eyes slowly and there was a young dear about two yards away bent over and looking at my face. I was sitting so quiet and so still it didn't seem to know what I was. it slowly walked around the back of the oak tree I was sitting next too and looked at the left side of my face maybe only a yard away. When it figured me out to be a human being it leaped with leaps and bounds in a backwards jump. It came back a few more times to have a look and then simply waged it's black tail and disappeared into the woods. It made for a wonderful morning-

Thank you for introducing me to hafiz. sublime poetry, reminds me of presence of God I feel inside me also.i feel blessed,as he guides me though the hard times we all have to endure.alas it not always easy to feel it when you're ill or in pain,I struggle when I'm ill,Vivekananda once said, religion is not for hungry mouths, same is true of illness.
But I bear in mind Saint Teresa little flower how she lost her faith when on her death bed only to get it back again as she lay dieing it came back stronger than ever ,never underestimate the power of the divine, IT is always in us but sometimes it's hard to bear.
Thank you again for your selfless service.💖❤️😀

Wild yams then perhaps? 😆 Yes, I suspect that this is Ladinsky's liberal and modern translation at play here. I'm sure Hafez would forgive him.

I have been listening to the teachings for maybe 2 years now and only just am I beginning to realise this consciousness. For me when I negate my self from thoughts perceptions feelings identity I feel a sudden wave of fear as I sense my I Ness disappearing. Only once have I managed to achieve being free from mind 2 months ago on the other side of my fear and letting go. I'm now practicing reaching this state of consciousness without fear by dissolving myself. Just a question to see if I'm on the right path really, is it normal to be scared in that moment when I feel my I is fading? Thankyou

Of course, the ego is a coward! But the thing is to recognise that this sense of 'self' or ego is merely an illusion - a substanceless, mind created delusion. So when those fear thoughts or emotions arise, look into them carefully with wisdom. Look to see if they have any lasting solidity - can you hold this ego or sense of self? No - it merely appears and passes away. It only seems real and solid when we feed it with out thoughts or attempt to push things away out of aversion or fear, or grasp things with attachment. Once you recognise your true, unborn, uncreated State you can flow with life and allow all things in the phenomenal world to arise and cease as is their nature to do. Hope this helps to alleviate the phantom 'fearer'. With all good wishes

Who am I? Indeed, the only worthwhile question to ask oneself. Ultimately, 'I' am the same as 'you'. This one provides a nice, neat answer to that question:
