I just switched to R6MII from years of Fuji. I tried every simulation constantly and leaned towards some for certain things, such as Astia. Classic Chrome simply desaturates an image and i dont understand the appeal for the most part. So far i see the Canon as able to have far more accurate colors, with the ability to tweak everything easily. But i usually worked the raw files anyway. The Fuji reds never look red unless you fine tuned the exposure and white balance. Thats a lot of work. FYI i still like the Fuji cameras, but i needed a camera that can focus on everything, all the time.@drbeardo6960
This was a really interesting video for me since I own both cameras but never bothered to do a side by side comparison. I agree with you that the Fuji gives a bit more character to the image straight out of camera. I think this is mostly to do with contrast and perhaps a touch more clarity which you can add in post. The photos at 8:44 show a big difference with the Fuji being more pleasing. However you skipped on what I consider one of the biggest differences between the cameras which is continuous autofocus. The Canon wins here which is the main reason I bought it. I do street photography and when there is a person in the frame, it just instantly locks onto that person and tracks them. That makes a huge practical difference to my working style.
My full frame DSLR died so I took an original Fujifilm X100 and a Yashica MAT 124G on a trip. That was a nice compact travel pair. My 1D Mark III would have been a bit troublesome to drag around the airports. Now I have a newly acquired EOS R that will fill the travel and main camera role.
I have to say, i like fuji files much more. 8:58 is exactly what im talking about. Yes the fuji is less sharp but has more organic look. Canon looks like a digital mess. Maybe it’s because of the chromatic aberration of the lens, but it seems like you can see every individual pixel on her hair. I own R6 and X-T30 ii btw. You could argue that full frame will always be better, but for 90% of people, the difference is so minor. Most people would probably get better pics with fuji, just because of film simulations. The biggest flaw of fuji, is the fact that it can’t compare tracking performance of any brand. Even on X-H2S.
With the X100v shortage I picked up the R8 and the RF 28mm for my compact carry camera. I also use the R8 as my backup camera for photo gigs that need it and the RF24-105L makes a pretty nice and versitle compact-ish travel camera to cover it all.

Thanks for the comparison. I prefer also how Canon manage color. Also, less limit on the Canon than the Fuji (especially in video). To get better batterie life on Canon, you have to disable Wifi (Airplane mode); that will save 25% of juce !
I had an x100s and a 6D. The x100s images are still much sharper and the lens distortion gave a much more desirable result. I had tons of fun using Fuji and learned a lot more with it. But when it comes to working professionally, in a demanding environment a full-frame interchangeable lens camera is always better IMO. Finally, I just got tired of the 35mm focal length. The R8 seems like a much better investment. But, that retro camera aesthetic is still appealing.
Totally agree! The X100v is kind of hard to justify owning but it’s just a really fun little camera to use. The R8 generally is the better investment, especially at the current prices the Fuji is selling for.
8:50 No offense, but the R8 + 35 is *much* sharper than the X100V. I can easily read "camara municipal" on the right, it's smudged on the left. Detail in the roof tiles and water stain are way better resolved by the Canon.
To be fair after I uploaded the video and watched it back, I might be inclined to agree, but in lightroom I was pretty sure the X100v was sharper at the time. I have included the RAW files to download from that comparison so people can draw their own conclusions. Thank you for watching!
Thanks, James - great comparison, as ususal! Worth mentioning: while not offering texture features like film grain, the Canon picture style editor allows to create custom tailored picture profiles (in regards to sharpness and color science) which can be used straight out of camera.
@@JamesReader Hi James! These days, I shoot RAW almost exclusively (I don't even store additional .jpg on the cards any more). Back in the days, I liked 'Fine Detail' most, and I installed the Technicolor Cinestyle profile on my 80D, which I used on all my videos before I got the R6 with it's Clog3 option. Back then, I also played around with Canon's picture style editor - it's GUI looks a little dated, but it's a quite capable tool to create your own, individual picture styles for a fast .jpg workflow.
I find the Canon picture style editor to be much overlooked. Why Canon doesn’t update and advertise it is beyond me. It has been there for quite a long time and the could have created an ecosystem of people sharing their styles. That plus extending the in-camera jpg features (like adding grain and controls for highlight and shadow handling) and making it overall more easy to use. I know it wouldn't be a focal length match, but I think the RF 28mm would probably be a better choice given the size. Or the 50mm f1.8. If you are trying to make a travel compact anyway. 35mm isn't big, but it isn't "compact" either.

Interesting comparison, as i had both these kits at different times (and wife and i were recently in Portugal. 😊). I find the noticeably larger size of the Canon kit to be a downside when compared to the Fuji…but then there is its lens IS. Hard to choose! I’ve ended up going with a Nikon Z50 (with different dx lenses) for my light travel and everyday carry camera. Biggest draw back at the moment, IMHO, is lack of quality primes that are also light and compact. Hopefully more of the Sigma primes will be released in Z mount.

Thanks! Thought I was losing it there for a minute. lol
Looking forward to checking these out. Thanks again for the comparison.@@JamesReader
As always great video James. Thank you for the comparison. I always used standard profile on canon because the colors are rich, saves me some time when editing my wedding photos. It's almost there, but i might try faithful for fun and see how it works with my workflow.
I’ve mostly always used Standard too, I would say it’s only been the last two years or so I have preferred faithful. Definitely worth a try.
Fujifilm cameras are all about enjoying photography and having fun taking photos shooting videos.
I have fun capturing great images, the brand of camera is irrelevant to me.
What do you think of someone who has a Canon R8 thinking of picking up the new Fujifilm X100VI? Is it worth it? Or should I just get either the RF 35 f1.8 or 28mm f2.8 and call it a day?
That’s a tough one. I think the R8 delivers better image quality in photo and video personally. But the Fuji is just really fun to use. I have preordered the new X100VI so will maybe compare it to my R8.
@@JamesReader thanks for your input! I’m tempted by the fun factor of the X100VI, but I know from my experience the R8 is a beast when it comes to photo and video image quality.
depends on what you shoot - if you shoot street, close ups of people, candids, documentary...go fuji 100 as it is more convinent fot its size
Why rec 709 on the Canon video quality portion?
Beautiful location, is it Lisbon?
It certainly is!
hello. Like it- total perfect editing~godspeed,
Thank you!
That’s the first time i hear someone claim the R8 battery as a plus 🤣
I dont see the point comparing pictures without printing them out. The only difference you see on screen is due to different color modes!
The x100v really does need an update.
Hopefully we see one soon!
I can't tell if this video is good, or juste quite subjectif, it feels like he's saying yeah canon is good but i like fuji so yeah fuji
😆 I'm in Portugal visiting my family as we speak " cursed rain" my two main travel are my old purchased new Sony A7r3 " very compact" with the 35 1.4 GM and the Fuji x100v. I would say that the portability and endless in camera simulation manipulation makes the Fuji the most enjoyable. In this case the Fuji absolutely looks better than the canon. The character is just impeccable through not accurate
Awesome! Glad to hear you’re liking the X100v. Hope you are enjoying Portugal
I have to ask is the model your gf/wife or do you pay her for every video?
Another great video. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!
Canon RP-RF 28mm- bunch of batteries. I’m golden 🎉
My favorite too!
