I'm nearly a nerdy as you Alex, so watch out for my shares, I'll keep feeding you all this interesting content for you to research and put in layman terms for the rest of the fish fam.
The first time I heard of this phenomenon (sneaker males) was in ruff (Philomachus pugnax). Found it super fascinating then! And I still do. I remembered something else about our chromosomes and variations thereof. XX male syndrome! It's when someone with XX chromosomes has the SRY gene (which is the gene typically on the Y chromosome that specifically 'determines' that someone is male). This causes someone with XX chromosomes to develop phenotypically male. (Further into the talk, this is reminding me of how the DMTR1 gene works in betta.) Then there is CAIS, where someone with XY chromosomes develops phenotypically female. --- Guppies changing sex due to environmental stressors reminds me of the fact that during times of warfare or severe stress, women give birth to more girls than boys. While not directly related, it strikes me as interesting. The female guppy would need to become male to create more offspring. And in times of trouble for humans, it would be important to have more females than males to create more offspring more rapidly. Like with the betta, where it's easier to cross one male with many females. -- Oh yes. Muh man is discussing epigenetics. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeessss. I love the discussion of epigenetics! Identical twins may have identical genetics, but their epigenetics may be so different that you cannot tell they are related. I believe that _epigenetics_ are more related to being gay than _genetics_ (though genetics still play a part, obviously). The reason for this theory is that in identical twins, they aren't *always* both gay or both straight. Sometimes one is gay, and one is straight. --- The sex determination of the silversides reminds me of crocodilians, since their decided by temperature as well. --- In regards to scarlet badis, I wonder if that's why 'sneaker males' are so common. What if they're not actually sneaker males, but were females that changed to male? Maybe it's a combination of sneaker males, _and_ them changing to male. --- I do love Audible. I've had it for some time now.
@@Fishtory Oh I could go off about chimerism too lol! That stuff is so fascinating to me! The first time I heard about it was a story about a transwoman. She'd been born male (appearing), lived her life male, but had always felt like a woman. Then it was revealed that she was a chimera after they discovered she had ovaries. I had thought about talking bringing up chimerism too, but didn't know how to shove it in there lol. Studies have been showing that chimerism is much more common than previously thought. And it makes me wonder how much that plays into other people who are trans. How many of them could potentially have chimerism, and simple have part of their brain (or other parts) that is literally from the opposite sex? Sorry the response took so long lol. I worked an odd shift today. These are, of course, just pet theories and I have no real science or evidence behind them.
This is what I like Alex. This is very interesting. When I was young we always had chickens. Every spring we got about 100 baby chick's in the mail. Unboxing the little chick's was always a treat because I got to pick one for a pet. We bought hens but some alwasy grew up to be roosters. One Sunday my grandmother decided that a certain rooster was going to be the special. I usually watched her process the chickens but she was doing this one differently. I asked her what she was doing and she said, I'm looking for something, I said what are you looking for, she said, I don't know, so I said if you don't know what you're looking for how you gonna know it if you find it. She said I figure if I find it I'll know it when I see it. One of my uncles was listening to our conversation, he put it on a plaque and it hung in the kitchen. What brought this up is she saw this big rooster lay a couple of eggs and she wanted to know why and how a rooster could lay eggs. We found out that he was definitely a roosters because she showed me both of his gonads. Males have 2 gonads and a female has one. My grandmother never found out why that rooster layed the eggs. And when asked she said, God just made him special.
I absolutely loved this and look forward to searching through your older videos. Nerding out and learning - my fav! Why am I not surprised that humans, in their greed, have convoluted the Betta's male/female determination with such egregiousness. There's a type of fish in the ocean that the male has something like a harem of females and if the male is hurt or dies the largest female in the group turns into a male. That keeps their group together and life goes on. Sorry I can't remember the name of the fish.
Yes! Thank you, and great suggestion.. Same with a nat geo one on bringing back dinosaurs from chickens using the same idea... sharp teeth, tail, scales, and longer necks turned on from paedomorphic and embryonic epigenetic remnant DNA

Alex, have you asked your members if we even care about having 'members only' content? This video would be great (for you) in the wider UA-cam... I think a lot of us subscribers are putting down money to support our favourite content, but not necessarily to get something specific back for payment 'just for us'. Maybe it's just me, but I'd happily be a lurker for literally no benefits whatsoever!
I'm happy to ask Definitely. I want the info free to anyone who is willing to learn...and I usually try to share the bread crumbs so that others can find the same details if they do some leg work... but Ideally, folks would donate what they can, when they can and everyone could access the same level of content (in my ideal world ) The higher levels 4.99/9.99 have some slight perks but I think it's like you're saying- kind folks just want to help spread the passion of learning and and hobby More so than the perks for the level.
@@Fishtory So am I right in thinking that this video is also like a 'lurker exclusive'? If so then it's too good sir! I would say 'early access' for a month or two would be more than enough reward for membership (we get the good-times community chats), then release it into the wild after membership activity dies off on that vid. I can't imagine anyone would complain (and more importantly, the better your channel does the more content we get, which is ultimately what we are paying for in the first place!). Like this video is high-science made relatively explicable, I learned a lot about genetics in general from it! On a side note, there's definitely a podcast somewhere in this kind of multi-specialty, aquarium-focused content, I think you could get it up and running without too much work considering all you are doing already!
👍💯🙌 that's exactly how I feel about memberships!! What we learn from amazing channels like Alex's and many others is priceless in my opinion!! I hope you're having a wonderful day!!🙏🌿🐟🌿💚
@@marypaigeflynn4512 you too! I think alex should have some videos as member exclusives for a few weeks, then send them out to "Greater UA-cam" for everyone to see. I really cant think many of us would begrudge him doing that -- in my books more views = more future content, so it's win-win for us anyway!
I have a tank half full of masculine female. I put about 60 young female fighting fish after selling the brothers in it. Half of them have developed masculine trates. They have brilliant colors and long flowing fines with a much larger size than there sister's . They are also fighting a lot. They do have huge bellys like females though . There was no stressful situation . There is one or two sleper male's as there are a couple of slender normal male's.
Good stuff Alex. Can't remember which series, but David Attenborough talked/showed the sneaker male phenomenon in cuttlefish, and the little male's disguise & performance were amazing...
Do you think this may be why betta sororities may start off peaceful but end very badly? If lack of males causes females to become male, with maturity, that could explain a lot of failures.
Um it should just let you download the 2 free books to any device you put the ap on but honestly it's different on everything thing (android, pc, Mac vs tablet or smart TV etc etc ) so unfortunately, I don't know the answer, but perhaps tech support with Amazon or an FAQ page can help you sort that...I hope!. Also, thank you so very much for the support. Best wishes -Alex

I enjoyed this since I've been studying this for different reasons. I do wonder if the situation I came up with could be a wild card in the mix. I came up with a theory of solar, magnetic, or other radiation, however mild, may also determine biological sex in some plants/creatures. It could explain why during different solar cycles or those living near radiation hot spots could reproduce and create totally different offspring with DNA randomizing to the point neither parent is genetically linked. I'm guessing this would still fall into the mutations catagory. These are only theories of mine.
Yeah well in the sense that heat is a form of radiation ...yes it's already proven...I dont see why other wave lengths and frequencies wouldn't also play a role
Speaking of starting female then growing gonads to become male. Isn't there a family in Africa that has a hereditary trade where for all intents are purposes they appear female then at puberty drop gonads and penis appear.
Yes, as well as a group on Papua New Guinea a remote mountain region...oh and in Turkey in the mountains with one tribe. I had this note saved from my gender bending fish episode month: the result of a genotypic male (with XY chromosomes) born with a deficiency in the enzyme 5α-reductase. 5α-Reductase is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone via reduction of testosterone. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the hormone responsible for the majority of embryonic development of primary male sexual characteristics such as genital size. However, the oxidized form of the hormone, testosterone, promotes secondary sex characteristics. Thus, an XY child without functioning 5α-reductase cannot convert testosterone into the form that develops primary sex characteristics and will have the appearance of female genitalia. At puberty, when large amounts of testosterone are produced, secondary sex characteristics (e.g., deepening voice, hair pattern changes, muscle anabolism, etc.) develop, thus producing a phenotypic male.
lol, hook this kind of content to my veins! Next can we have the influence of colonialism on WW1 and the unexpected ways it affected the genetics of the harlequin rasbora? edit: for the record, don't do that!
Hahah well harlequins would be a stretch but I do have a video on how WWII & the could war caused the Czechs to be the 4th largest fish breeders in the world. Also how imperialism and WWII led to soldiers being stationed in exotic tropical locations and or being simply bored and posted to remote outposts, which then caused them to bring home stories of colorful fish, native practices of husbandry and so forth. The years after WWII really mark the start of the hobby as a middle class, retail option. Along with airlines and flight innovations

I just got way too excited about fish genetics... man I wish I could afford to go back to school.
Meee too. On both comments lol. Thanks for tuning in and have a awesome weekend
@@Fishtory you too!
There's a type of fish in the ocean that the male has something like a harem of females and if the male is hurt or dies the largest female in the group turns into a male. That keeps their group together and life goes on. Sorry I can't remember the name of the fish.
It's the fish in the thumbnail! Heh
9 months that made you (4 or 5 part document) I a good one to watch about the genes switching on and off.
Yes! Thank you, and great suggestion.. Same with a nat geo one on bringing back dinosaurs from chickens using the same idea... sharp teeth, tail, scales, and longer necks turned on from paedomorphic and embryonic epigenetic remnant DNA
@@Fishtory oooooh. I will have to watch it!
I spy with my little eye👀...a turkey baster 🦃 behind our favorite fish guy!
Sorry... that was my squirrel 🐿 moment amongst all the science talk lol. 🤣 I'm an artist🎨 so it takes me a bit longer to grasp the scientific side of things... which means I will be watching this video waaaaay more than just once (with countless squirrel moments) before I completely understand.
You are a smart man and a very good speaker. Very easy to listen to. I have already learned so much from you, my fishy friend! Thank you for that!
🌱🐟🌱🐟🌱🐟🌱🐟🌱
P.S.- If this video hits 10 million views... it was probably mostly me re watching until I FINALLY "got it"😉
🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿
Hahah right on! I'm the same way if a concept is new to me. I'm also an artist first and foremost www.somainkdesigns.com but your praise is far too kind.
Thanks for being a part of the community though! Welcome welcome as always!
I want the info free to anyone who is willing to learn...and I usually try to share the bread crumbs so that others can find the same details if they do some leg work... but Ideally, folks would donate what they can, when they can and everyone could access the same level of content (in my ideal world )
The higher levels 4.99/9.99 have some slight perks but I think it's like you're saying- kind folks just want to help spread the passion of learning and and hobby More so than the perks for the level.
Thanks for the info on what you're experiencing!
That was very interesting, thanks for the video!
Thanks for tuning in my friend!
Good stuff Alex. Can't remember which series, but David Attenborough talked/showed the sneaker male phenomenon in cuttlefish, and the little male's disguise & performance were amazing...
Oh yes! I watch anything with Sir Arrenborough hehe. So I know what you're talking about. I think it's the flamboyant Cuttlefish
Dang i hate i missed this live, well i am definatley have it saved to watch after my stream . See ya later Buddy
Right on. Thanks Jess.
Looking forward to it!
You rock. As always!
@@Fishtory I ended up missing the stream...! Thanks shitty sleep schedule lol. But still watching it now.
Do you think this may be why betta sororities may start off peaceful but end very badly? If lack of males causes females to become male, with maturity, that could explain a lot of failures.
It could very well be
Hopefully be there
I signed up for the audible trial to support you but didn’t receive the two free books. Did I do something wrong? I used your link
@@Fishtory so the basic plan is the free trial to actually get the credits you need to upgrade to the prime plan. Might be because I didn’t have Amazon prime.
I missed the stream. Cant wait to watch it!
This was good stuff!
So glad we have some true nerdy birdies in the crowd
@@Fishtory Glad we have someone who is bringing some of the latest news on species and the hobby. Something that is off the beaten path which leads to nuggets of gold.
We are Gods! We just need to realize how to activate our DNA
The first commenter to lose their mind and take it too far haha 😄 some serious Ironman ..maybe Xmen stuff could unfold soon though for sure lol
@@Fishtory 😂 no the X-Men stuff and the avengers and all that is put out there to make you think that THAT is what I mean when it's not close. Like look at what monks can do in meditation and think that is barely the beginning of what we could do.
@@Fishtory more like the movie Lucy. But I'm one of those nuts that thinks that we are consciousness having a human experience.
730am?
430 lol
@@Fishtory so you're just rolling the whole country out of bed,,,, well aside from ohahu, Valdez and Saipan
Great talk Alex, I feel a lot more cleverer now 😂👍
Lol well I don't know about that...I watched it and was a bit bored lol...but the info is so cool when you think about it
I enjoyed this since I've been studying this for different reasons.
Sounds interesting🤔
Speaking of starting female then growing gonads to become male. Isn't there a family in Africa that has a hereditary trade where for all intents are purposes they appear female then at puberty drop gonads and penis appear.
Yes, as well as a group on Papua New Guinea a remote mountain region...oh and in Turkey in the mountains with one tribe.
I had this note saved from my gender bending fish episode month:
the result of a genotypic male (with XY chromosomes) born with a deficiency in the enzyme 5α-reductase.
Did you forget that the SRY gene exists? This is painful to watch.
SRY is only in mamals
lol, hook this kind of content to my veins!
@@Fishtory hahaha, I literally picked the most obscure and nutty hypothetical example of anthropology and fish that I could think of, and you basically already have a video on it.... that's a LOL
This was super interesting in a very nerdy way I had to split up a sorority of seven females the smaller one was being picked on she/he/it is now a very beautifully looking male??? I think lol
Whoa! Sounds like you have the same exact thing going on hehe. Thanks for sharing Holly 👍
