  • The Step-by-step guide to build the ultimate rain barrel !
I go over all the materials, tools, location, setup and assembly to show you exactly what you need to do to turn a food grade drum into the best DIY rain barrel.
I found this barrel and all my other barrels on facebook market place for $20. You can easily complete this setup for less than $40 and have access to 55gallons worth of rain water.
One thing not mentioned in the video is covering your rain barrel. This will increase its life from sun exposure and keep the algae down for cleaner water. Hope you enjoy this build!

I been doing my rain barrels just like this for around 10 years. Have 3 pairs around the house. Added a hose connection after the valve so the wife can use a garden hose. Doesn't have a lot of pressure but gets the job done.

wow I was skeptical about flipping the barrel upside down, but the threading on the cap seems so clutch.... have to re-think my design now :D thanks! I find hose fittings / splitters easier than rigging up PVC, though!

Interesting solution, but with the faucet pipe in the bottom, sediment will get into the garden hose. I've seen people placing the faucet on the barrel side 2-3" above the bottom.

If you do that then the sediment will gather at the bottom and you won’t be able to get it out. Use filter to reduce the sediment and having the valve at the bottom allows you to flick the sediment out

First off most barrels no longer have 2x 2 inch female iron pipe thread bungs most have one and the other a course thread I'f that's missing you can not get a pvc or abs plug I do like your idea of using the barrel upside-down as for the plug below the 3/4 inch threads don't need to drill in most cases just use something about a 1/2 inch in diameter anything that fits into the hole without touching the threads once in just a blow with a hammer and it pops off as for the inlet get a 3 inch pvc preferably or abs adapter to fip u drill or cut a hole just big enough to thread the 3 inch adapter into put a 3 inch T rain goes in the top and the take off is the overflow barrel fills to the top then anything more runs out the T and can be plumbed away from the building the T can àlso be used to connect to other barrels I'f all barrels are not at the same levels just make sure that the overflow is above the level of the top of the highest barrel the T can be a 3x2x3 the overflow can use 2 inch fittings which are usually cheaper to buy I'f you are àlso tieing the barrels together at the bottom all levels will be the same all my 4 barrels downstairs have to be sealed between each other and vented out above the level of the highest barrel connected to my downspouts this way I have 180 imperial gallons of water for winter use and 450 imperial gallons of water for the the frost free months the barrels that came with the house are open top so if I replace them it'll be with a closed top barrel probably used upside down as well

4:38 I had success with one barrel. Added a 2nd one using a T as you describe, but the water is not flowing into the 2nd. Do I need a vent of some sort on 2nd to release the air as it fills with water?

What I would recommend is putting the inlet on one barrel and the overflowed on the other so they are both vented

That seems like a ton of work! I think I'll just stick to watering my veggies with my good ol hose water lol.

Why didn't you put the barrel the other way?

What size PVC pipe are you using for the overflow?

Click bait!!! I clicked to see how you'd put in the overflow pipe but it's on another video. Thanks for the instruction.
