The mono effect is Annie Clark's (aka. St Vincent) production choice. She does it a lot on many of her songs because she was so inspired by the music she loves and those that her dad listened to in her youth.
Annie Clark is a genius. This song is like a love letter thanking/paying homage to the strong women that came into the entertainment industry before her that were given a hard time by the industry and/or public that ultimately made it easier for women like Annie to succeed without sacrificing her own artistic vision, She mentions Jayne (Mansfield maybe?), Joni (Mitchell) , Marilyn (Monroe), and Tori (Amos). A lot of dark lyrics for sure, but life is often dark.
This is really interesting. I've never heard of St. Vincent so it was a first reaction for me too! not usually my type of music but I can imagine listening to it on a long summer road trip... The melody is kind of positive and the lyrics are bittersweet which is very neat. Also I just looked the song up and it came out this year! So I guess the style is just purposefully like this.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this song! I love St. Vincent and this song, which came from her NEW record "Daddy's Home" which came out this year! Would love to send more requests in the future, I'm curious as to what types of 'difficult music' you'll take in because I have so many genres and artists I'd love for you to explore !! :)
Please! More St. Vincent! Her other songs from this album “Down” and “Pay your way in pain” are really good. And she also has a ton of other stuff that sound completely different. Glad you loved this
If you're looking for suggestions, here's some songs I think it'd be cool to react to! My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow Slowdive - Machine Gun Sweet Trip - Dsco Porter Robinson - Get Your Wish Kero Kero Bonito - Only Acting Beach House - Myth 100 gecs - Money Machine
Very nice reaction! If I could request something, could you please react to "The Ballad of Cleopatra" by The Lumineers. It's a very cool video where they put together the music videos of some of their songs to create/show this story that they made. It would be really cool if you reacted to this. Thank you, and have a nice day!

I'd love more St Vincent Reactions, her song "Birth in Reverse" is great if you haven't already reacted to it, or "Cellophane" by FKA Twigs
I will check those out!
