    Well, I apparently didn't get enough water squeezed out of my skein before beginning to stab it with the fork tips of the Wilton Violet solution. The colors broke beautifully but because of the extra wetness they spread out like crazy. The final outcome was still very pretty, so I'm happy with it, but I will try again to get it to work the way that it should have. :-) Thanks for these terrific tutorials. I am having a lot of fun playing with food color!

      Rebecca, I am at this very minute, pre-soaking my Bare Capretta 100g skein in your 16 cups of water and 3 generous tblspns of white vinegar, you didn't say how long, so I will do this overnight just to be safe LOL. I will mix my dye tomorrow. Wish me luck!! I"m so nervous. This is my very first trial of dying yarn.

      My yarn came out AWESOMELY, except one of the ties broke and I have a tangled mess. As soon as I get it untangled, I will take a pic and post. I'm proud of my first attempt! Capretta is very soft and squishy. I was so afraid of it felting but it didn't.

    this was fun! I'm very interested to see what happens if you use a pale gray color base ... I do have a question tho - what if you really want to dye the yarn violet and not have all the breaking? Thanks for sharing these videos.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  7 років тому

      When I've wanted to dye a true purple yarn, I start with a cool dyebath (water, vinegar + dye) and then add presoaked yarn. I slowly start heating the mixture, either on the stovetop or in the microwave. There might still be some tonal variation, but you are likely to end up with a more consistent color.
      Here is my first attempt to dye purple yarn and I got very solid colors: www.chemknits.com/2009/11/color-purple.html I used McCormick's and not wilton's, but the McCormick's purple breaks, too. ua-cam.com/video/hcAzmcJYe5Q/v-deo.html

      Actually I was wrong, I did use some Wilton's violet in one of the samples in the ChemKnits blog post. (Sample #4) I forgot that I made a stock solution of Wilton's paste and then added drops of that to some of my dyeing projects.

    I tried to recreate this exactly, but my violet hardly broke at all. I ended up with mostly dark purple speckles with very subtle blue edges in some areas. What would cause this? Did I wring out too much of the water from the skein? Maybe if the yarn had been a bit more damp the color would have traveled over the fiber more easily? Thanks. Love your videos!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

    Love your videos!! I cannot wait to start trying this. My question is: how do you know how much water to use in a steam bath for the yarn and how long to steam it for?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +1

      I would add a couple of inches of water to the bottom of the steamer pot - enough so it won't go dry while you're steaming but so it isn't touching the bottom of your basket. I tend to steam from 20-40 minutes depending on the project. If there is more yarn in the basket I might steam for longer. If the colors are more intense or if I'm using fibers like silk/alpaca I might steam longer. So 30 min is a safe starting point.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      Violet is one of the most dramatic food coloring colors to break, but this could work with some other colors (maybe with less breaking, though.) The violet won't wash out with more vinegar.

    Great results! If I'm not able to steam the yarn in a pot, can I cure it in a microwave?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  7 років тому +1

      Absolutely. This is what I do most of the time but lately I've been experimenting with different heating techniques. I will put the yarn on a microwave safe plate, cover with plastic wrap and then heat in 2-5 min increments until the yarn is hot to the touch. Sometimes I repeat this a second time after letting the yarn cool down.

  • @fastfaithful8783
    @fastfaithful8783 7 років тому

    Hi! Thank you for all of your wonderful videos! I was wondering, how do you decide between heat setting methods? Microwave vs steam pot vs anything else? Thank you!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  7 років тому +2

      Fast&Faithful This is a great question! For anything hand painted (like these speckled yarns) I normally set the heat in the microwave. steaming on the stove top is a different, but fairly equivalent method. maybe the fibers won't get as hot since the water in the yarn isn't boiling, just steamed.
      immersion dyeing (space dyeing, kettle dyeing etc) can be done on the stove top, in a crock pot or microwave. I personally like the stove top because I have the most control over temperature. it is also easier to access the dye (for dipping etc) on the stove.
      I hope this helps. let me know if you have any other questions!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  7 років тому

      It depends on how I'm applying the dye. If I'm hand-painting then my preferred method is the microwave. steaming the fiber on the stovetop is a comparable method. If I doing some space dyeing I like to use the stove top because I have more control over the temperature. Using a crock pot or a pot of water in the oven are comparable methods. I sometimes experiment with other types of heating techniques to demonstrate that there are other options.
      Using steam is more gentle to the fiber than immersion in boiling water. I am lucky that I've never felted any fiber!

Update: read others' comments and I was using 100% cotton yarn. Not sure why it would be so different though. The blue started bleeding all over when I steamed the yarn. Maybe the mistake happened there?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Joetta, Unfortunately food coloring doesn't really work on cotton yarn. You need a protein based fiber (wool, alpaca, silk, etc) for this to work properly. To dye plant based fibers I recommend tie dye kits or Rit dye for natural fibers.

    Thank you so much for sharing this technique!! I just ordered some acid dyes from Dharma. Do you think this technique could be done with those if I mixed the powder with water first? Also, when you steam your yarn in the microwave, do you add water to the plate or just put the wet yarn on the plate and cover it? I wasn’t sure if I should add some water to the plate with a little bit of citric acid to make it set? Thank you! 🖤

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  5 років тому

      Hi Laura, This type of technique would work with acid dyes, although you will only see breaking if you're using a color that happens to break. (If that makes sense at all.) There are Dharma dyes that break (purple pop, avocado, and sage are supposed to but I hvaen't tried them yet.)
      I don't add any additional water. My personal preference is to only microwave food save dyes - but this is because I have a built in microwave that is hard to clean to my liking if there's splatter. I like to use a dedicated dye pot that has a steamer basket for 30 min or so instead. Happy Dyeing!

    What do you think the pink and sky blue would do with this method?
    I got 100% wool yarn from knitpicks and will be dyeing with my granddaughters this summer and they love pink so wondering if you think it would be successful?
    I don’t have time to experiment before they come so I would love to have a knowledgeable opinion.
    Also how do you dry this yarn? Would it be okay to dry it in the dryer? I got the super wash.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  6 років тому +1

      CJ - pink and sky blue would look great, but I think that the specks might be a single color. I believe sky blue is just is just Blue #1. Pink has Red #3 - but I"m not sure if it has any other food coloring ingredients. (I dont have one in my stash yet to check.) The color breaking happens as a result of the mixture of food coloring colors. You might see some saturation changes - darker to paler colors in these specks, but not breaking.
      Using these colors would absolutely be successful with 100% wool yarn!
      Don't put a skein of yarn in the dryer. You'll likely end up with a super tangled mess. I hang dry all of my skeins. (Before I had a clothes drying rack just for yarn I would use a towel bar. Some other people will use hangers on a shower bar to make some more space.)

      Jenny B. if you use superwash wool or another machine washable variety then yes! I might prewashed them if donating them in case there is any bleeding but I've seen no fading when I've washed a swatch.

      ChemKnits Tutorials Do you use paste to dye or even the liquid colors?

      Jenny B. I use a combination. I like Wilton's (like in this video), liquid drops and even koolaid and Easter egg dyeing kits.

    When you steam the yarn, where do you get the metal grate ?

      I was using a canning opt, so the grate came with the pot. You can use a steamer basket from a cooking pot, too. (that's what I use more now)

    Is there another way to heat set this dye such as microwaving?

      microwaving would 100% works for this! I would cover the yarn, microwave on high for a total of 4 min (in 2 min intervals) or until the yarn is hot to touch. I used the steamer basket here since prior to this I set most of my yarn in the microwave and I was trying to mix things up a bit.

      ChemKnits Tutorials I tried my first yarn dye today yay!
      I used the microwave to set the dye.
      There was a very slight tint to the water. Does that mean the dye didn’t set properly?

    Hi
    Did you wet the skein before dyeing it?

      Yes. It was presoaked with water and vinegar so the colors would strike

    How do I send you a picture so I can ask a question about it?

    Was wondering what would happen if you used a spray bottle instead of a fork

      Spray bottles have so many droplets that you get some pretty even coverage with maybe some speckles around hte edge. I like using spray bottles with stencils on sock blanks for fun effects. I think you could use a toothbrush to splatter on some speckles... but I haven't tried that myself.
