How does the timer thing work I'm confused on what you guys are doing like how do you what's the point of using it what does it do how does it work
@@teekotrain6845 Timed speed game (5 or 3 mins are common for fast games) so it doesn't take forever. For other play it could be a count down to how much time you have to make a single move. In this type of game "As per the standard rules of chess, the player whose clock runs out loses the game. Love the good natured "trash" talking, backed up by charisma on both sides. Entertaining to watch.
wow beautiful and brainy
I didn’t care for it. Love the girls though.
Backed by BBC at her hotel
nah he'z garbage
Yeah I had no idea what was going on with the chess strategy, but it was still entertaining

This killed me.
Also slayed by that line.
Ahhhh! Now I know what I have been missing after my openings: defense.

I love that chess is getting its recognition again. When I was in fifth grade my teacher challenged me at lunchtime and I made the game last until the end of the day before beating her. She wouldn't give up. Years later I saw her and she told me for years after that game she told her students about me.. I miss chess.
That’s a beautiful little story
@@251rmartin no she was definitely trying... I'd say 12 years later I saw her and she still remembered that day. You don't forget the day a 5th grader beats you lol
@@markokristic1223 that's so disgustingly wrong I honestly don't even know where to start. Chess sharpens strategy skills, predictive ability, perception, problem solving, and creativity. I'm not sure what point you're actually trying to make, no one was comparing video games to chess. It sounds like you're having a convo in your own head that we haven't been privy to.
The only tremendous waste of time here was actually reading your comment. Thanks though!

Some big mistakes there under time pressure, but very entertaining and a deserved win for black.
Botez 'forced' the guy placing his King in one forbidden file/column with his Queen (promoted pawn)..
I saw him play Nf3 at around 8:32, probably hoping for a quick double attack on her rooks via Nd4 should she take the pawn with Rxb5. But it seems to me that Rcb2 would have been the end of his b-pawn, even though the game would not have ended nearly spectacularly that way. But her Rbb2 move was probably better, and perhaps there was a way to dispatch him quickly that was missed under time pressure. I think I'll transcribe all the moves and take a look and see, since it's definitely piqued my interest!
It’s one thing to see rapid movement on the computer… seeing it across the board was is beautiful

You know you're a total pro when the pieces are all rolling around the board and you still know exactly what's going on there and keep playing at the speed of light.
Damn. When I was a kid, me and my friends took an entire afternoon to complete one game... These guys could complete a whole championship faster than that.
They could also take an entire afternoon to complete one game though.
This dude just casually explaining the history of agricultural botany cultivars as he plays -- hilarious. Great watching the second match especially and great playing all around! Kudos to Corbblah for the fresh humor and eclectic sass throughout!!!

@@ptrcrispy The normal thing to say would have been "history of plants we eat", but I couldn't resist the chance to try and match the cool tone and sophisticated extraness of his style. Loved this even though I don't understand too much of chess. It is so nice and refreshing to see friendly and intelligent people on social media with very little ego. Such interactions between strangers is going down faster than the Siberian tiger of the weather for that matter
I think 'people on social media with very little ego' is an oxymoron..
3:04. Owned. He didn't see it and neither did I. The previous move with rook captures pawn was to move the rook away from the king so the bishop can give the checkmate. So tricky this girl.
The move he could have done to stave off her checkmate was to move pawn, left of king, forward, instead of the one he chose. But she would have probably run the king down anyway. But I love the moment after he moves that pawn and she spends a moment looking over everything, only showing her knowledge of what's about to happen in the excited/analyzing activity of her fingers on her right hand, before settling back and 'politely' giving him a chance to see his coming doom.
@@adipsous White was winning easily anyway, but Black carelessly didn't leave an escape square for his king. Too cocky.

I love the Primal essence of chess. How you can be strategically trying to best your opponent and trash-talking them and at the same time have respect for them
exactly! You play and have fun with your opponent never losing respect, be friends again after the match.
I saw the opposite happening in the European soccer final: English team thinking to win Italy easily, behave trash, losing and did not respect or accept being beaten up. Sport is sportmanship essentially, and chess is a great form of teaching it!

"Where's your king?"

that was entertaining, Corbblah is a good sport, his diatribe on veggies was hilarious.
I really like how calmly she defends in both games until the opportunity arises to counterattack. Playing French defense as Black in a blitz game is especially hard. It feels like being squeezed into a cardboard box, esp. if playing against a 1800+ player like him. But she's around 2200-2300, I recall, and it shows. Great games.
For the uninitiated, like myself, please explain the 1800+ about him, and, the 2200-2300 about her.
@@southroncross These numbers would be a part of the ELO rating system, which classifies players by different strength. Now, there are different chess organizations, both national (example : United States Chess Federation aka USCF) or international (FIDE) that give different ratings and titles. Normally, unless a player is at least at a FIDE master level (around 2200-2300 points, I think), they most likely will have a national rating ONLY (USCF rating here in the United States, for example), but a good thing is that the rating/title system is somewhat similar across many countries. Basically, someone who's just learned how to move pieces but makes constant blunders and hangs his pieces might be rated around 600. Someone around 1000 or 1100 is probably strong enough to beat everyone else in their neighborhood, but is still considered pretty weak for competitive chess. A lot of so-called club players (people that regularly participate in tournaments at their local chess clubs) would be around 1200-2200 points. Now, in many countries, 1200 would be considered a class D or a category IV player. 1400 is class C (category III). 1600 is class B (category II). 1800 is class A (category I). 2000 is expert, which is a title given to players and also known as a candidate master. Then, you have a master (title) which is around 2200. Then, you have FIDE master which is around 2200-2400. Then you have the international master (IM) title, which is around 2400-2500, and finally you have a grandmaster (GM), which can go anywhere from upper 2400's to upper 2800's. Now, the guy in the video has an expert title, so his rating is most likely around 2000 points. The reason I mentioned the 1800+ points is because it's at 1800 level (class A/category I) that the players are considered to be advanced players. 1800 is basically where strong intermediate players generally morph into weak advanced players, yet still advanced. It's also at this level that losing 1 pawn or making a few smaller strategic mistakes might cost you a whole game because the players at this level are very knowledgeable in chess theory, openings, tactics, strategy and endgames. It's not that those below 1800 ratings points are weak players (there are so many very strong players below 1800), but most players below 1800 (myself included) tend to lack consistency to reach that 1800+ level. Like they might be capable of playing a few games on that 1800+ level, but will then make significant mistakes/blunders in a subsequent game that advanced players normally don't make. Of course, everyone makes mistakes in chess, but advanced players tend to make fewer mistakes and also are better at recovery from their own mistakes. Now, the reason I mentioned why it's hard to play French defense (an opening she played as Black) against someone who's as strong as this guy (2000 points in his case, but 1800+ in general) is because class A and better players know very well how to use the space advantage in chess to their advantage and French defense, although very solid and dynamic opening, is a bit of a cramped opening, and if you're playing it as Black, you better be very careful about not letting White create outposts for his pieces deep in your position or creating a strong king-side attack against your king who has castled king-side but doesn't have a knight on f6 to defend him due to white pawn on e5 often wedged into Black's position. Also, keep in mind that the absence of Black's knight on f6 gives rise to some potentially interesting bishop sacrifices on h7, where White can obtain a decisive attack against you. But this is where I mentioned that Alexandra's chess strength helps her tremendously because she knows how to defend this and how to counter-attack. And French defense is a typical defend/use-White's-lapses-in-evaluation/judgment-to-launch-a-counter-attack-offensive-against-him type of opening. I believe this guy is super strong, and I know it's fun for him to talk this much, but honestly, he would have played this game better if he were more focused on the game and less on the talking part, as fun as it has been to watch. He plays a good part of it on auto-pilot, knowing all these positional patterns so well, but that's a mistake even highly rated players make when they're so engaged in the auto-pilot mode and are not really fully grasping or bothering to completely grasp the position on the board right in front of their noses. And that's where I think his talking hurts his game, as he's not paying attention to everything on the board. In the 2nd game, he's so overconfident in his attack that he moves his Queen from d2 to f4, and leaves his b2 pawn undefended an his d4 pawn under-defended, which she takes advantage of by placing her queen on b6, with a double-attack on b2 and d4. He can only defend one, so he loses his pawn on d4, and then she forces a queen trade and guts his attack, basically.
Playing defense is the easiest way to win.

Seen him on Master Minds with Ken Jennings?
Emory Tate's son is kickboxing world champion, I think
@@davidbiro7466 Back in the day (really, this is not that great an anecdote, but--) Corbblah used to write on his scoresheet that he won, even when he lost: 1-0 (for White) or 0-1 (for Black). And Emory Tate, a 2400 to Corbblah's 1900, beat him over-the-board, and noticed that Corbblah scribbled 1-0 on his score sheet, indicating that Corbblah won instead.
Now, these things are meaningless. Completely. It's just your own copy of your own game that you take home with you and study your games with. Most of us have our complete history of tournament games. Then, at some point, many of us throw away that box of papers -- I kept mine from when I played GMs, of course. But anyway, they're meaningless.
The World Open of course got the correct result from their game; it was just Corbblah's personal copy of the game that had a 1-0 scribbled on it; Emory Tate saw it -- and was practically CHASING Corbblah through the skittles rooms of The Adams Mark Hotel, harassing him at the top of his lungs to fix it. Talked about how he was a black belt and should kick Corbblah's ass and such.
Most of us just thought it was funny.
