I would blend options 1 and 3. We know where the enemy screen is, so keep the advanced guard there. Deploy scouts along the river and crossing over it once they reach Delitz and Schumburg (using those places as logistic points for recon) to find evidence of the main force. If the main enemy force is more than a day away, move the main body to rejoin the advanced guard and crush the screening force. If the main enemy is closer, deploy your main body to a better defensive position across from the enemy utilizing terrain and infrastructure.

Nothing wrong with a blended approach. Moltke said his solutions were not the only way to solve the tactical problem.

Given the objective, Id do 2.

This is another one where I would like more information as the answer is immediately obvious, or at least not to me.

@@UmpireLaFondiose I think the key factor for moltke's solution is that although the advance force is smaller, it's still anchored on a river settlement. so the enemy advance force is less a direct threat and more a blocking nuisance for the moment. in that situation, to best employ your force to defend the area, moltke's other priorities of maintaining flexibility takes primary place and so you should send out recon forces across the river asap to gather vital intel, while reserving the main body to counter as needed. sending too much force into weissenfels may leave you vulnerable to a quick enemy advance at delitz or (less likely) schumberg and a surround

@@FlameQwert That makes sense, yes. Thanks!
