The greatest italian singer, Mina, said in an interview that she still has to pull herself together from the amazeness she felt the first time she heard ms Sarah Vaughan, legendary!!! Everything is perfection about Sassy's singing, her pure tone with dynamics from pianissimo (never voiceless like these modern whispering singers that try to croon confidentially) to forte without shouting, rasping or gasping just to show off a fake power, natural, juicy low notes to high notes in full head voice, never thin and childish, expression, musicianship, creativity, taste, the all package
Isn't that comparing apples and oranges? They're both out of this world. Sarah's voice is like a deep Burgundy, Ella's is like sparkling Champagne. Sinatra's is like Stout, fitting for a "saloon singer." Who would give up any of them?
Why do I just wither and forget all resistance When you and your magic pass by My hearts in a dither dear When you're at a distance But when you are near, oh my So many singers especially contemporary ones skip the first lines which in my opinion gives more meaning to the song. Thank you for the wonderful performance
A genius like Sarah Vaughan doesn't need to be described by the number of awards won. That is just to diminish such a gift as hers so far beyond from conventional ways of measurement
My favorite everything singer of all time: Hope we'll meet again in another life when we're both young, healthy, strong, looking for a love and we catch each other's eyes. Love you Sarah: Remember the lyrics "We'll me Again, some way, some how , but I know we'll meet again some sunny day..."; too square but in earnest, sung by Vera Lynn.
+jeff Craven Did you know that even before Dick Clark Hosted American Bandstand they used to show Snaders when it was still known as Bob Horn's Bandstand in Philadelphia. They showed Peggy Lee singing A Latin Style Song.
+laminage Yes, I know it. If you like I have had, became friends with persons of many nationalities and colors, you know it's mainly governmental and religious propaganda that keeps people separated into groups; except for the class issue. I'm mainly white, and racist of any color are the scourges of society, welfare recipients that keep finding more loopholes to get over on the taxpayer, illegal aliens, and a huge number of U.S. politicians and their lobbyist are the enemies of the U.S. People.
What a sweet, beautiful, heartfelt sentiment. I truly enjoyed reading it. I too am a long-time admirer of the GREAT Ms. Sarah Vaughan & appreciate others who express how they feel about her. Thank you kind gentleman. I will pray you get your wish one day in Heaven. God bless you.💕🙏💕
Love the way Sarah finds her own melodies in the song and elevates the tune to her own compositional heights when she sings. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous clip!!
I've seen many video clips from her later years but few from her earlier days, so this was a treat. Her voice in her youth was the purest sound you could ever get from a jazz vocalist.
@@mrmetaphysics9457 Absolutely not! Billie is the greatest of all of them. Her voice, per se, is not "beautiful" but her expressive power is beyond description.
The colorized version is not so yummy as the original B & W, but the sound is still as lovely as can be. And what charming lyric: "the nearness" of the propinquity of the beloved, the simple physical "nearness." Such a brilliant hymn to the greatest delight: physical love. And the velvety, sensuous beauty of Sarah's voice in simple delight. Rare beauty! Yes, "wondrous"!
For those of us who enjoyed living through the 40s and into the 50s with the great post WWII era pop music when you turned the pages of the book of your musical memories a full chapter of adoration for The Voice was a special section to and of itself. People try always to rate the best of everything. Music isn't competititon and shouldn't be, but of all the female singers ever only two were in distinct classes by themselves, Yma Sumac and Sarah Vaughan. Love ya Sass!
OMG - she's so cute here! When would this have been? As she got older, I love how she used the lower range of her voice more. A great, great artist - one of the best of all time! Towards the end of her career I have a recording of South Pacific - her Bali Hai is amazing!
If I was ever asked who were my singing idols, I would answer that Ella Fitz, Barbra Streisand, Dinah Washington, and the the one who would stick out a little more would be Sarah Vaughan. Thank goodness for UA-cam to have footage of her television appearances and catalog of song to help us keep her music and memories alive and the younger generation can realize what real music is truly about. I still miss her after these passing years since her death back in 1990. I know she's entertaining up in heaven. Still RIP.
this is miss. sarah vaughan , the lady who can go from baritone to soprano in one breath , i call it vocal gymnastics , if there's another singer who can do this , please tell me .
+arnborj6 nice to hear from you , i did check out ms reeves , great voice , buttttt ! i have always maintained that the vocalist of the forties and fifties , will always maintain a mystique because they had their pick of the greatest songs ever written , that was when cole porter , the gershwins , johnny mercer , sammy cahn, lerner and loewe , rodgers , hart , hammerstein and the list goes on , boy did the write them , and the world has remained mystyfied to this day .
+Daniel Forte None could really duplicate vocalist of that old era and the least thing our generation can do is learn from them. Thanks for giving it a try to listen though. I just watched earlier an interview about Sammy Cahn on how he write out a song/s. I find it so amazing. I like your list of composers. I'm a big Sinatra fan. :-)
I first heard about her when I was watching Motown Returns To The Apollo back in 1985. I was born in 1966 so she was a bit before my time. From what I heard this was called a Snader which are early versions of Music Videos. Dick Clark showed one on an American Bandstand Anniversary TV Special. Peggy did one to Manana which means Tomorrow in Spanish. In The UK they would have Films courtesy of The Pathe Company where they would do Clips most notably of The Royal Family whether it was Queen Elizabeth or even King Hussein of Jordan.

this 'is the song' that was played in a scene in the 2017 TV series 'Feud' about the film acting battle of Bette Davis (Susan Surandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange). The scene consists of Joan taking a break in bathtub while smoking in her dressing trailer on the film set. Now, the film credits stated it was Ella Fitzgerald singing the radio song..but i'm sure it was Sarah Vaughan.
Anita was very unique and she spawned a trail of singers in her style like June Christie, Chris Connors and maybe Julie London, but she was more of a stylist than a jazz singer to me, so I can't put her in the same category as the others. I'd put Peggy Lee up there with the others before Anita.
I look at this way; aren't we lucky to have had both Ella and Sarah?
Ella was asked what her favorite song/s from another artist was. She answered "Sarah Vaughn- The Nearness of You"

Not only does she sing this to die for..she does the verse, which very few singers do. Sass kicks ass!!!!

She had a magnificent instrument. I feel that she overdoes the vibrato.
Isn't that comparing apples and oranges? They're both out of this world. Sarah's voice is like a deep Burgundy, Ella's is like sparkling Champagne. Sinatra's is like Stout, fitting for a "saloon singer." Who would give up any of them?

Sarah Vaughan was one of the top 5 female jazz singers. She's making it her own.

In my humble opinion, the single greatest female jazz singer of all time... period.
As a Little Boy Smokey Robinson admitted that he was a big fan of her music growing up in Detroit.
