One thing i would say is if you find a room you can rest in there a few turns and it seems to be less likely to be jumped, to save going back to the fire.
    Love this vibe

Hey coming off your SUPER old rim world Series going back more than a year you should make another series on it. It was big for your channel and I really enjoyed the it!

That's a great idea :) I definitely want to do RimWorld again--preferably with a DLC to make things a little different ;D

So far the only things appealing about it to me are 1) Maze, and 2) the art style.
I don't need a truckload of options, but some basic gear and being able to arrange party member's positions (and that being a meaningful endeavor) would probably put this game on my buy list.

I am with you! The game has a great style and I love first person mazes like this, but I would love some more options and gear myself ;) I know it would change the game, but I love getting items and gear and feeling more powerful in RPGs.

Thanks for giving this another go, Doc. It sounded a little more like a frustration to you than an enjoyment, though. And I think that's an understandable reaction, given how this game differs from other games out there that seem to share it's genre. The early game's a good bit more difficult, there's not a lot of information to go on, the combat is not as defined or visually structured, advancements are not clearly defined, nor is how they are achieved.
I think in this game decision making revolves around managing risk. And I think you're right, there is this ever present unease as to whether or not your characters are going to be able to survive the next battle, or any battle early on. I will say the game does allow for failure to build into success in a few ways, and the risk can be manageable with a bit of care.
If you ever do revisit this title, I'll offer a few things I've learned, and maybe they'll be helpful. But really, I think it comes down to one's particular play style, as what works for me might not be enjoyable for others. Either way, here are my 10 tips:
    1. As the book says, when you're building your initial party, try to have all the damage types available in it: Piercing, Slashing, Blunt, and Magical. Additionally, I would say it's helpful to have someone on hand who can use Light magic.
    2. In combat, if you have one person who is low on hp, the others still have decent hp, and you think the party has a decent chance of winning the fight, use the 'Defend' option for the low hp character. It gives a significant boost to a character's defense and chance to deflect incoming attacks. It's not a guarantee, but it often has a better outcome than fighting with them.
    3. There is no shame in fleeing from a fight in this game. I've yet to run into a fight that I couldn't successfully flee from in the first round. If the party leader is asleep or paralyzed from an effect, that can prevent running in later rounds, so you'll need to be aware of which enemies can implement those status effects. That said, your assumption that fleeing from a fight you've been in for a few rounds gains you no rewards is not necessarily true. It is true that you won't get any stat increases, but I believe any skills you've unlocked during the fight remain. Also, your skills do level up through use(I think each skill has 3 ranks?), so I think the progression of any skills you used during a fight remains as well.
    4. Don't be afraid to lose characters. I mean, its not what we're going for obviously, but it seems a near inevitability that it will happen. In that aspect, it reminds me a little of Darkest Dungeon. Generally, the replacements you get back at the fire will be close to the same stat level as the character/s you've lost. Even in a total party wipe, it's not a hard reset of all your progress. The replacements will come in at a slightly lower stat level than the lost party. The real loss here is in the skills, but there are a wide variety of classes to explore, and skills to reveal through them. Also, the rate that you gain skills on the replacement characters will be quicker than normal until they get to a similar skill development as the character/s who died, so you shouldn't be short on skills for long.
    5. Resting in the dungeon is a viable option. There are smaller closed off rooms, and even designated safe areas, you can find while exploring. You can even rest out in the open, though your chances of being surprised will be much higher. If you can find a room that's a single square, or hunker down at a dead end, these are generally better places to rest when out and about. That said, if you are surprised, you can simply flee the fight and rest again. Fleeing will incur a small hit to hp and sp, but that can be recovered with a rest immediately after.
    6. Something to know about ambushes; if you are confident you can survive an combat that initiates with an ambush, it's better to fight it out. If you can survive an ambush, it offers a bonus to the stat rewards.
    7. Buffs will stack, but they rely on the intelligence stat, so in the beginning these effects are slight. But as the INT stat grows, and the particular buff skills rank up, the effects become much more significant. But to develop the skills, they have to be used in their lesser state, so I would say using them often, even though they might not seem overly effective to begin with, is a good idea.
    8. Resting is a viable form of grinding for skills and stats. Not very exciting, I know, but if you lose a character, or god forbid endure a party wipe, its a viable option to stand near the entrance and rest until attacked to build your skills back up again, and then proceed exploring as normal.
    9. If you don't want to deal with mapping, there is a full map of all floors available on the Steam community page for the game, under Guides.
    10. If you choose to focus on a particular skill for a character, remember to share focus on the 0 cost base skill too. That will rank up with use as well, and it pays to have that developed if you do happen to run out of sp.
Well, that's about all I can think of and what I was able to gather that might be helpful if you choose to come back to this. I'm certainly finding some enjoyment in it, but I get that it's not to everyone's liking, and I can understand why. If you do revisit, hopefully you'll find some use in the above. Either way, thanks for posting a second vid on it, and enjoy your day.

Thank you so much for this amazing post! I am now going to play again as you explain so much that gives me hope. It's great to know that they get skills faster after death and that I am making some kind of progress overall. I will use all of this to try another dive in the dungeon! :D
