The Common Briggs Intek Problem: Your Riding Mower Won't Start. Broken Compression Release on Cam
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лип 2024
- So, why won't your riding mower turn over? I'll show you how to first diagnose this common Briggs & Stratton Intek camshaft decompression (also called compression release) issue, explain how the decompression cam works and the easy steps to repair it.
When this decompression / compression release part breaks, the symptom is pretty much identical to a weak battery or bad starter - the engine tries, but won't turn over.
What happens now is many people will replace the battery first, then the starter and perhaps even the starter solenoid; only to find out $200+ dollars later, their riding mower Intek engine still refuses to turn over. Welcome to the popular & growing club of Briggs Intek owners who have had a decompression camshaft failure.

T-Bone, I’ve watched a lot of videos showing how to replace a Briggs camshaft and adjust the valves. YOURS IS THE ONLY ONE I’M SAVING! Thank you.
T-Bone, I’ve been doing small engine repairs for over 25 years and actually teach students so the knowledge is passed on…. But let me tell you, your video is going into my classroom as it covers this procedure beautifully, with simplicity and with humor. Well done brother!
Awesome, thank you. Get them all to Subscribe 😆 and Subscribe to T-bone After Hours 😆
This mechanic is so good and has so much experience that when he sets valve clearances, he knows how to adjust them without without using a whole series of different size feeler gages. A novice should never follow suit until he has at least ten years of experience doing it. T-bone
Probably has more like 30 years of experience. And that's why he makes it look so easy. So if you have only done this one or two times, My advice is using a couple of different size feeler gauges. Don't be fooled by T-bone's humility and expertise. He's making everything look easy, Believe me. And, the tricks he shows along the ways are invaluable. Thanks again for another great repair!!! 👍👍👍
exactly. I would've gone .005" on clearances. But I'm amateur guy. : l
The Tonya Harding 4000 hammer cracked me up so much I couldn't watch the rest of the video because my eyes were watering from tears of laughter!! Now I have to replay the video! 😅
I love your demeanor and sense of humor! You've got yourself another subscriber, sir! Thank you for your expertise, experience and willingness to share it with the rest of us. The audio and photography qualities of your videos are top-notch as well. Very professional!
Thank you 😊

The Tonya Harding 4000,lol! Definitely gotta be of a certain age to get that one. My easy repair would involve throwing that single Intek into the scrap bin and replacing it with a V-twin.
no job is complete until someone is bleeding... and this time it wasn't me! hahahaha
A stick magnet, lol. What a fantastic idea. That's genius. That's a really simple way to test.
That’s the best Briggs camshaft video I’ve seen. Thanks
Wow! Not only do you get your mower fixed, you get T Bone's song also. Nice music. go T Bone!
Love that hammer comment !!! I'm gonna run out to my tool box, snatch open the "Drawer of Thor", pick out a BFH, and have my bride paint or letter the handle to reflect, "TH-4000" !!! Love the videos !!!
🤣 🤣
Hi Mr and Mrs T-Bone, this has been a pleasure to watch really good information 👍
An engine "heart surgeon". T-Bone, you know and love what you do.
I've had an intech 22 v twin since 13 ,best lawnmower engine I've ever had, I'm not commercial but I've never paid to have my yards cut
The man with the magic touch has his own song!🎶. Pretty cool, dude!
Thank you for showing what "rolling" actually is/does.
Sir you are consistant I every video. Straight to the point, every motion towards accomplishment of repair. I enjoy very much
Thankyou Sir.
Yes sir, thank you. We try to be to be to the point because we understand the frustration of people trying to repair their mowers. Thank you for watching and commenting my friend.
Keep them coming. Regards from the UK and yes, I prefer to watch your video rather than the Euro Cup Final!!!!
Nice song T-Bone! Another Briggs cam for the land fill. Atleast it didnt blow the engine up! 👍😎🇺🇸
Super exciting video, very detailed item by item, step by step instructions on how to get this done. Truly amazing my friend, have a great weekend!
Well done, neighbor. You make it look easy. I like that song.
The Tonya Harding 2500..... 🤣🤣
I picked up some plastic razor blades the other day to try on the sump and head gasket cleanup, we'll see if they work or fail.
Nice job on the ACR repair brother.
Hey Mrs T-Bone 👋
And thanks so much again for the assistance the other evening T-Bone, it really helped. 👊
Your t bone song really rocks
Love the song. Is that you singing on it. Great video brother
I gotta replace mine on my 20 hp intek plus.... thanks for the video. Just perfect.
Awesome video! Great narrative and detail around important do not miss facts. You are a true professional Mr. T-Bone! BTW.. Great music and lyrics!
Glad you put this one on your video!! I suspect I’ll net it soon as I got one of these engines.
An absolute pleasure to watch this work from T-Bone,,,,,, awesome
Woooooooo got another camshaft job done t bone you the man wooooooo😂
I just found your channel. My tractor does that all the time. She's gonna get the Tonya Harding 3000 real soon!
👍👍👍 You make it seem so easy. Thanks
An absolutely great and detailed video. Thank you sir!
I bought a 2005 Arians 17.5 rider off the original owner, he only used it a dozen times.... Looked brand new....but crank just like this one, but I got lucky...hydro locked😎👍
Love the song towards the end 🎶
Mr. T-bone I must say I do get a kick out of your videos. I love learning, but I laugh a lot at the way you present the information. So here's a trivia question for you if a motor doesn't have your typical spirograph oil pump. How does oil get slung on the inside to all the critical parts? Is it just momentum? Thanks for the education and the entertainment.😅
T-Bone to the rescue again! 😊
Thanks T-bone! for your channel and the info on it!!!!
The bolt wouldn’t come out time to pull the big guns out 😂
Excellent video very informative and the song rules
Ditto love the song. Another good one T - Bone
Love the camshaft song ❤️
Mine does this same crap! Now I know. Great video.
SIEMPRE SE APRENDE ALGO DE LAS PERSONAS CON MAS EXPERIENCIA....MUY BUENO ESTE VIDEO....MUCHAS GRACIAS POR LA IMFORMACION.....APRECIO SU TRABAJO RALLYS SMALL ENGINES
Great video and I love the closeups on the parts going in. I'm about to tear into a 19HP briggs, as it has that distinct "clank clank" sound of a broken connecting rod. Sub to your channel. See you in the next one. Cheers.
Great video thank you for sharing. Very important to always use OEM parts ask me how I know. I replaced two aftermarket camshafts in back-to-back mowers both failed.
You a funny guy, love your videos
One of mine has the same issue. It was given to me as a parts machine because the owner said the engine was locked up. I quickly figured out that it was a compression issue by the way it was acting. I did a valve adjustment on it, and it fired up and ran great. I used it for a couple of months with no issue, then it was parked for about 2 months. When I came back to start it, it was doing the same thing again. This mower has a bad deck, so I haven't torn into it yet. I recently found a donor mower, so I am going to start tearing it down when my two current projects are finished. I'm thinking the camshaft is probably the issue. It has a Failtek.
Another good video!!!!
and if you really don’t want to fix it, mine has been doing this for at least 5 years and all i do is hit the starter a few times until it releases pressure and it spins as normal and then starts…
Great video good to know thanks again😊
Love your. Song,that's awesome,great video
Thanks for the video. Like the song 🤠
SUBCRIBED, LIKED and Hats Off to this great "Mow"canic. thank you, THANK YOU!
I love your detail 😅
Love the T-bone song!!
Always entertaining my friend
AWESOME VIDEO THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO
Perfect video
Good job
Good ol thunder gun 😂
I'm having the same problem with my 2004 Murray that has a 17 and a half horse Briggs It acts like it don't want to turn over I've tried replacing the battery and starter re-adjusted valves it's got a new head gasket on it but it just won't turn over
Love the song …… thanks
...awesome video T-Bone....I learn something new every time I watch....simple question - I noticed the two gaskets, the sump cover and the valve cover,
you put on dry. Do they come from the factory totally dry or do they have any kind of oil/sealer on them?....would it be a good idea to pre-lube the gaskets?
TIA.... 🙂
Wow! He good!
Great video! Just subscribed as well!!!
Thank you
Tbone I love your videos thank you
Thank you Kenneth for watching and commenting my friend
Without a lift it's much more difficult. Did mine last year. Lasted about 14 months. Did aftermarket cam.? Got yo donut again
Do you have a video on repairing a broken connecting rod
where i can find the song? :D very educative videos! hello from Romania
Thank you for this great video to learn from.
Do you happen to have one in your collection for the head gasket?
Same thing, sears rider with 18 hp Briggs.
Thank you. Yes we have a couple, can't remember the titles. Look for a smoking video on our channel.
@@RaleysSmallEngines smoke signals. Perfect
hahaha 😆
@mnbsay9548 🤣
What kind of work light were you useing.
T Bone , Any Videos on removing Electric PTO Kohler Command Cud Cadet Gt2544 Any tips please!!!
Briggs & Stratton technician told me the aluminum rod went to the exhaust because it would hold heat better than the metal rod metal rod would bend
Please let him know he is confused. Sorry. Aluminum is on intake and steel on exhaust, or you can run both with steel push rods
Briggs & Stratton when I ordered a rebuild kit I had to replace pushrods and all for the camshaft and lifters the technician told me to make sure I put the aluminum rod on the exhaust because aluminum will hold heat where the metal will bend
@Tommy-K4BWN sorry, he is confused
I was at Briggs & Stratton dealer for a long time they wanted me to do their warranty work till I found out how much the price was and had to keep old motors in stock and parts and go to believe it was Georgia at the time 4 weeks schooling and I said no I don't want to do it and I just become a dealer and I ordered parts for my mowers I had one that a guy had worked on couldn't get it running twin cylinder horizontal engine and come to find out it was a wart camshaft I have never seen a camshaft more than the rods and he replaced everything but the camshaft you can twist the camshaft for like a s curves way it bent don't know why he did not see that Kim in that shape replacing the camshaft and everything motor runs fine I miss working on stuff because of my health I'm no longer able to do that or drive an 18-wheeler anymore
I have a 25 hp twin cylinder. Is this engine prone to this issue.
How about show us how to make the oil siphon tank.
I have a video on how I made it. Check it out when ya get a chance.
How many hours did it take you.
Great video, but I’d just do an engine swap.
What causes those cams in the briggs to go bad so often?
Design failure and material
What type of oil
Number one thing is have a 300 cca battery that’s been load tested
From there value lash and then camshaft 😢😢😢
😎👍💯
inspection sticker scraper??!!?? lawd... did you drive in the 1980's?
🤣 in the 70s I was driving
Did 3 in one day goog job.
What's the cost of a job like this?
And this contributes to little to no oil changes!
This is easy
Don't let T-bone turn you in for a copyright infringement. For using T-bones lawn mower song !! 😁 UA-cam police 🚨 ya know!! 👍
Yep, I have a license and copyright on my music. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend.
There is no point for loctite on that pulley/crankshaft bolt. I've never had one come loose and never used loctite on one in my life.
All of that and forgot to show the decompression bump after the reassembly.
Lmao! Tonya Harding 4000
Broken compression release on this Briggs and Stratton engine which is on a MTD made riding mower your flashlight is not wanting to stay in place 😂
After scrolling thru some of the oyher comments I see im in the minority about the "song" and i use that word grudgingly. I still stand by my original statement. Apparently a lot of your other viewers were Dukes Of Hazard fans .I still say you turn a mean wrench. And you do a great job of explaining. Hell. Ill even compliment you on how neat and organised your shop is. But the song is LAME.But now i know when to hit the muts button
Removing the engine, cracking the case open, and installing a new camshaft is not an easy fix (because compression release broke). It rarely happens and is usually out of spec valve clearance as the cause.
T- Bone ,None of the after market cams will last in the intek engine. Compression release just break right off. Ive put 7 cams in 3 engines to have them all fail. I wont work on the intek anymore because I'm just spending the clients money on junk.
T, Bro you turn a pretty dang wrench. You were really good at explaining hoe to fiagnose. You're real good at operating the camera so we can actually see what you're doing. All together it was a well produced ,informative video. Now I know you didnt ask for my opinion ,we all know the old one about opinions. But bro, that lame ass corny ,hook ass tune about TJ and the mower?? Come on bro. That was just painful.Domt know who wrote it or performedm it. Dont care. Its LAME.Worse than Jerry Reed's Smokey and the Bandit. Maybe its just ME? maybe oyher folks Dig listening to cookie cutter music. If so I aplologise to the entire audience. you know your stuff with the engines..But please give us a heads up whrn you start the amateur hour musical torture.so i know to hit the mute. I wish I knew half as much as you about turning wrenches. Thats probably the biggest compliment i could ever give
TBH that song was cringe af
Excellent video T-bone
One thing about you'll never run out of work as long as ɓriggs is around. Always been junk.
