GREAT SHOW!!! I Gave my home to my 26year old i moved back to the hood!! Ill be putting mine inside at the back door and have a fan in front of it !!!
Great video! Finally found someone who talks straight up English for those of us that are not that familiar with generators or electrical. Thank you!!!
Best $$ we have ever spent! We had catastrophe hit on the East Coast back 2012 I believe. Lost power for about 3 days. Our basement was a swimming pool due to the sump pump not having backup and we lost all of our freezer and refrigerated foods, also no heat. Luckily we do have a gas stove. The damage was in the thousands 😔. My husband had an electrician come out and hook up on the side of our house. The gas generator powers our hvac (1st level and basement), and major appliances, sump pump etc. This is great information you are giving. We do have a Ring security system but the motion sensor flood lights is a great idea.
Don, my man. I dig it. I have a dual fuel generator that stays outside. I keep it in a suncast shed that I installed some vents in so it can breath. I also have 100lb propane tanks that I will use to run it, since propane will never expire. I also hooked up an exhaust fan like you would find in an attic to push the hot air out. My generator has an electric and remote start, and I installed a solar panel on top of the shed so that the battery is always kept topped off. They have a bunch of videos on UA-cam on how to make a generator shed. I also had an electrical come out and install a lockout so if when the power goes out I can lock out the power and run the house off of the generator. I have a 50 foot 50 AMP cable running from the house inlet to the generator. You’re off to a great start sarge.
See, Linc! You are READY, ready!
Just trying to keep up with you my brotha.
A generator shed sounds like an excellent idea. I'm not familiar with those so I'll need to look into them.
They’re great. It gives me piece of mind knowing that it’s sitting outside, away from the elements, but still ready when I am.
Having a generator is pretty much a necessity these days. You will have such a sense of relief now. Our generator setup is pretty much like yours. Ours is 5500 watts and we can run our fridge, a couple fans and AC window units, our aquarium filters/lights/heaters, our tv, and a couple lamps. We have to unplug the fridge to use the microwave and unplug everything to connect and run our well pump. Our generator runs for about 12 hours on 5 gallons of gas. We try and keep a 5 day supply at all times. We do rotate and use our stored gas for lawnmowers, etc and refill as we do to keep the gas relatively fresh. We learned our lesson about the importance of having a generator when Katrina hit our area. We were without power for a month. Keeping watch during times when you use your generator is a good idea another lesson we learned from Katrina. My husband had to meet unwelcomed "guest", who were up to no good, at the front gate with his rifle one night. They quickly left without incident, thank goodness. Thank you both for sharing your journey it is appreciated.
Thank you and your husband is a kind man; I think there would have been an "incident" at my house.
Good job Pegi and Don. Here in Daytona Beach, Fl. Lost my instructions for our generator during a move. Thanks for your video. I'm a subscriber now.
Put a solar hidden camera on your fence or tree facing your generator for extra security
Great Video Brother. I appreciate you. CO= Carbon Monoxide. Safety is paramount. CO displace O2, Oxygen, negative effect of Hemoglobin in your blood. Very important not to run in garage. Great point. Stay safe and healthy.
You did a great job on your tutorial. Very thorough. And like some other subscribers mentioned. A carbon monoxide detector throughout the house if you don’t already have one. Agin I enjoyed watching the video
Thx u..I just bought 1 ur video is very helpful since this is my 1st time owning a generator
thank you for all your help
Thanks, man! I finally set mine up, and I watched your entire video while doing it. Much appreciated! Also, nice shirt!!!
Thank you for that walkthrough....will bookmark this video!
Please do!
@@pegianddon I have solar setup in the works but this gives an additional backup option and its not too scary for a gas generator...lol
Thanks for the info. I will be installing a motion floodlight as suggested. Keeping watch will be hard for us. Have to figure a way to secure it. Good luck to us all.
Good luck!
We just purchased a small 2000 watt generator just to get us by with the intention of getting something larger later. The small ones are super quiet.
Especially the Inverters.
Hello Don, Great video. Thank you for sharing. Keep it coming. Tell beautiful I said hi 🙋♀️. I can’t wait to see more 🤗🤗
I would be a nervous wreck worried someone would steal. You may want to think about chaining it to a tree or cementing a stake to chain it to.
Definitely
Hey Don,
My husband said your extension cords was to small you should get a 12 gage .
Love Y'all
I mentioned that 12 gauge was best, but 14 gauge works great and the 16 gauge will work for smaller loads.
Yes. Read about how you need the right cord. One of the professional guys at a generator company said if you don't, then your appliances can be ruined.
I'm glad to see this video here. I haven't watched it, but now I'm realizing how much of a necessity this is. All of my food preps and water preps and everything are great, but our electric was scheduled to go out from 8 to 5 for some kind of transformer replacement or something and I learned today, I am woefully under stocked in that department. You need a generator. You need some way to cook your food and stay warm. I do have food that can be prepared without electric, but I was so cold today in my house, I was secretly miserable. I laid around in blankets all day trying to stay warm. With the occasional trip to my car to heat myself. Thanks.
My husband is an electrician. He said if you are running a really long extension cord to your freezers for an extended period of time use a 12 g cord. He wouldn’t use a 16 g it won’t last very long. We love watching you and Pegi!
Thank you for this information on how to use a generator I 💘 love watching you and Peg I Tfs
Love you guys!
I'm with you on not running your generator in the garage , I have been following you and Pegi for a while now , and I have my prepping my food storage is almost done,, every time i go to a store I pick up a few extra things . Thank you Don & Pegi , Stay safe and be happy!!
I was JUST thinking about the sleeping in shifts idea. Thank you for sharing. Blessed be!!!
Mr Don...no suggestions..just happy you got the generator...we are looking to get one...my hubby is an electrician...heating and cooling technician..so I feel confident that he will do the right thing to work the generator. You and Ms Pegi be safe and bless.
You are SO lucky! He can hook it straight to the house.
@@pegianddon Yes!...Thank you Jesus! By The Way: Good movie just came out tonight on Netflix: Jingle Jangle
excellent review. after watching your review i bought one of these generators. living at the sea shore in va beach we get alot of heavy storms.. thank you and keep up the good reviews.
Excellent, Don. Just so happens we are expecting winds up to 60 mph and power outages this weekend. This is right on time! God bless you and Pegi!
I'm so with you on not running your generator in the basement or in the garage!!I lost one of my best friends to carbon monoxide poisoning and her husband, daughter and granddaughter all passed, from running it in the garage!!True story...it was a big deal here in Baltimore, made the news!I'm still in shock and disbelief 😢🖤May they rest in peace!!!
Thank you for sharing and we are SO sorry for your loss.
@@pegianddon Thank you very much!God bless you and Peg and your family always, be safe and take care 🙏🏼
You're a smart & Caring family man. My husband has done exactly what you are talking about with both of our generators one of them is gas and the other is propane and they are outside. Good job😁💛
That is awesome! I appreciate the confirmation.
Also if you use too light of a extension cord for a long distance you can hurt your appliances because of voltage drop.
I got your 6 on this issue. I'm in hurricane alley, "Texas" ! People die every single year from running generators without proper ventilation. Man hold the line, cause this is a serious issue. I run mine in the backyard far away from the house.
Hey Don great video! Did you ground the generator by chance?
Good morning Pegi and Don with every video I get more and more education about prepping thanks so much and God bless.
We just lost our power for 2 days this past week. Our generator saved my freezers full of meat!
14 ga should be used mini. 100 ft of cord will have some voltage drop. The larger the gauge, the less voltage drop. To my freezer I would use 12 ga @ 100ft
Thank you! I have now gotten enough of these comments that I believe I should not rely on my 14 gauge cord. I may be stubborn, but I'm no fool. I hope I can find a coupon or discount on some good 12 gauge cord.
Sleeping in shifts is a good idea. I'm a little wary about the noise factor. I live in a town house and thought about light sources as well...meaning you don't want to have a well lit home when others are without power. There are so many little things to consider as we prepare.
That is a very good point. We live in an area with annual power outages so many of our neighbors have generators, but I will be turning my lights off at night.
I'm so happy for you and your family. It certainly is a great investment for when power goes out. MY generator did power our two chest freezers, two refrigerators, two tv's, lights, water heater, water pumps. God Bless! Aloha, Annette from Big Island Hawaii
@Annette Cummings what kind of generator do you have?
Thank you!!!!! This was soo helpful.
Very smart man! Don’t let anybody tell you it’s safe to run one anywhere inside!
Mrs. Heart told me about you, so glad I found you!!
Good evening Pegi and the Don 😊
A very highly detail and important video. I enjoyed your video, but for now I am holding off on the generator, not due to what I saw, but the part of having the generator running and someone enters mt yard to take it, that's my only fear at present. Great job!.
Sadly, that is the possibility with anything of value, especially during a time of crisis. Most of my neighbors also have generators, and they have not had any problems that I've heard of, but you never know.
I have a smaller generator also, and I bought heavy chain and a padlock to attach it to the deck post. However, if we lose power from anything other than a local storm I don’t plan on using it long. It is just to keep the freezer cold long enough for me to can all of the meat in it. After the first few days if you are running a generator and no one else is, you are going to just be advertising that you have stuff that is worth taking.
During Hurricane Sandy in New York people were stealing generators like crazy because you couldn't buy them. You are smart to think ahead.
Another thing I was looking at was a pure sine wave generator that can be used to power electronics such as phones safely as well.
Power from these types of generators is cleaner than mains power.
Rather than getting a larger generator to power a lot of stuff I would prefer a smaller inverter type and just reduce our usage around the house.
A smaller one can be more easily chucked in a vehicle and uses less fuel as well.
Going to be a good backup for you guys.
Thank you Don for the info on how prep the gas ,great job
Thanks for the video.
Don your a smart man, always run Generator outside. I live in new England and we lose power a lot for a couple of days at a time. I use stable in the gas. Its good to run the generator periodically when not in use for long periods of time. What I do is if I'm working with power tools, instead of running an electrical cord from my outside electrical outlet to run the tool I use the genny. Also I change the oil in the generator regularly. The generator you picked will run for hours on 4 gallons of gas. I set my alarm clock if I have to get up at night. Also my grandson has shown a lot of interest in the entire set up and operation. Hint hint 😉so I sleep all night like a baby and he willingly gets up and refills it lol
We can always count on OneEyedJack for great tips and a great story 😀!
We have that same generator and a a little one as well. I agree with you about not putting the generator inside of your garage or house.
Thank you for the great video! That’s a very impressive generator and something we’ve been looking for also. God bless❤️
Nicely done. Thank you for this video and your time... PS... go with the 12ga extension cords...
Good information video
Hey Don, do you plan to also have a solar generator as a backup? Gas generators make a lot of noise and will definitely attract attention. Imagine no one in your area has power and you are running a gas generator, folks will definitely be paying you a visit.
Nice point
Good video. Thanks!
Hey fam. How are you doing? Blessings to you and your family.
We got a little generator early in our prepping journey, and have had to use it twice already this year due to weather-related power outages. My husband has gotten good at firing it up to plug in just the main fridge and the internet (he works from home.) In the case of a longer outage, we would alternate plugging in the deep freezer too. Instead of having it wired into the furnace to run the blower, I've picked up a couple of space heaters we could run during the day. We'll huddle for warmth at night if necessary. Good stuff, Don!
Good one thanks for the video God bless
I would get a locking cage for it!!! It will walk off while it's running if not secured.
Maybe I missed it but I did not hear where you purchased your generator I know you got the cover from Amazon and What was the cost of the generator? I’m so glad you made this video I know I need to get something for protection of my frozen foods. God bless
I purchased it from Home Depot online with free home delivery; $249.00 + tax.
@@pegianddon Thanks and by the way today is the first day I saw your channel so glad I did I even had to subscribe
Great purchase Don!! I know you and Pegi are moving next year But maybe in your new home you might want to consider a Generic for your home if you lose power the Generic automatically comes on and you have power throughout your home, However is does cost a few thousand dollars BUT if you guys travel like my husband and i do and you lose power your food would be protected. I love it, Love You Guys
That's the plan, Cynthia! All I can say is that once we move, there will be a lot of FANTASTIC changes.
Kool info thanks
Love it. Thanks for sharing. We have an inlet box that connects to circuit panel bc we live an area that’s a risk during hurricane season. Worth the investment. Keep posting videos Familia. Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
That is awesome!
Great video! We get put back into lockdown starting mon...ugh
I think it's Tuesday for us. I feel better about it now that we are prepped.
Great video Don 😊👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Hey Don, great stance on NOT running generators from ANYWHERE but outside, and in a well ventilated outdoor location at that! Even some poorly ventilated "outside" locations some people have used up here in Maine have cost lives! Just please don't do it! I agree. 🙏☮⚡
Sad. 'Convenience' or 'worry about theft' is NOT worth tour life!
Good video Don! Very informative! Thanks for sharing!
I’m finding it difficult to get my husband on board with prepping. I know that at first Don wasn’t so much interested. Pegi how did you change his mind and get him to come around.
He started checking out the situations on his own. He came to the realization that we depend on him basically to survive and he could not let us down. Check out his "3 Reasons Why I Prep" video.
Sally, my husband wasn’t on board and still isn’t. You know what I’m doing? I’m doing it alone because it has to be done. I hope he comes around but if not... 🤷🏽♀️
Nice review 👌
Hey, thanks for the quick review! Very helpful. Any updates? Like, have you had a chance to use it? If so, how'd it go? We are planning on buying one and using it for two freezers. We're looking at the model that allows for propane or gas. Any insight would be much appreciated.
Hi Don..this might sound like a silly request but can you show us how you hook up the freezers
I can't do a separate video, but if you go to 9:23 of the video, you will see a grate covering an opening to our basement. I will run the red 14 gauge cable through the grate, into the basement, and to the freezer. I will have a 4-outlet surge protector power strip for the freezers. I will run one for 2 hours then run the other for 2 hours and repeat that 12 hours later. Freezers don't need to run all day. I will be trying to time it where it would be okay to run the space heater at night. I hope this helps. I will try to include this information as part of a future pantry video.
Thank you!
Hello Don great video. Question did you ground your generator?
Great question. I did not. I followed the setup instructions according to the included manual which did not mention grounding, however, in my Army days I recall that all generators were supposed to be grounded. I will be checking for a ground point and looking for a ground strap.
@@pegianddon Hello Sir been doing some research on the grounding question this evening. Some say you don’t need to ground new portable generators because the metal frame, but I have been trying to find where a manufacturer makes that statement and that is something that I guessing if it is true their legal team will not allow them to say. It looks like the materials Copper grounding road and copper wire are about $30 to $35. Think I am adding this prep. Again thank you for your video it has really got me thinking about preps to keep my family safe. God bless.
Love y'alls channel....stay safe!!
Yeehaw and whoop whoop . I've been waiting to see this video. I am so thankful you finally got a generator!! 😁😁 You will not regret it. I was so worried ya'll wouldn't have one. Yeah you guys have done it!! Blessings and we love you guys!!💛💛
Yes! Thank you!
Great tip, really helpful. Thanks..
I wondered if you could tell me what size the tubing frame is on that generator? There is a wheel kit that fits it, and I think it would fit my different model generator depending on the tubing size. It looks to be about 7/8" or 1" maybe???
Thanks for the review...!
What about grounding the generator? Is grounding required?
Non-ethanol gas only.
What made you decide to get a gas generator over a solar one? I've been eyeing a solar simply because of no fumes or noise. Just wondering your thoughts! Thanks for another great video
The only solar generator in our price range was a 1400 watt version. It would be great because uou can bring it into the home, but my freezer has a startup surge of 1500 watts. Also, I have experience repairing gas engines.
@@pegianddon Thanks for the reply. Makes sense with your history with gas engines. Stay safe and God bless
That's just like the generator that's been sitting in its box in the barn for 3 years. From research I found it was made by the same manufacturer as Champion. It was the least expensive for the size and quality that I wanted to spend at the time. I am so sorry I did not get one mounted on wheels. My husband is uninterested in taking it out, and it's too heavy for me. I purchased it originally to boondock with my R Pod 176. The RV is now my sewing room in my driveway.
Thank you Sir! Quick question, I have the same model. Manual says Grounding. You do not mention this.Any Tips?
Hello Don and Pegi
How many appliances can the Gen4000 run at 1 time?
GOOD CAIN AND BIIIGGG LOCK
Hi family. I have a little generator but I would never run it close to my house. Im not the brightest bulb but really folks. I know that unfortunately you have to keep reminding people. Dogggon it people get a clue for goodness sake
Some people heard from somebody who heard from somebody. What can you say? Shrug.
?
Don you are very wise and thankfully won't be persuaded to run that generator in your garage or basement. I know the peace of mind you and Pegi now have that your frozen food is safe in case there is a power outage. I suggest that if you can put pad locks on your gates, do so. Sadly, you will have to be worried about theft but if you can lock gates to the back yard it will be one layer of protection.
Hi Don: If you are going to run a long length cord (100ft) check the voltage at the appliance (freezer) while they are under load (running) and make sure you are getting the proper voltage because of possible line loss. The 16ga may not be enough size to do the job. I always run at least a 12ga cord and especially at 100ft. Of course both freezers may not kick on at the same time but the compressor motors have a large current draw at star up. Try to do the voltage test on each freezer at start up. It would be best to try and catch both at the same time at start up; Frank
Make sure to keep enough oil to change it if you have no power for several days...make sure to read your manual s to see how often...some are to be changed every 48 hours of run time...
Great point!
Have you thought about building a box frame around the generator to secure it from the elements
I am thinking about it.
Hey Pegi and Don! I’ve been thinking about purchasing a generator as well. Conflicted on whether to buy a traditional gas powered or solar.
🌹 Great video! We have a generator similar to yours but have not had to use it yet. We also have a 14 gallon gas canister on wheels ⛽️ with a 6 foot hose and nozzle so it will be easier for me to use, we got it on Amazon. I enjoy all of your videos and we will use our generator outside in a secure location.
Smart!
We had heard people were putting cheap lawn movers in the place of generators. This was so those in the home still heard a engine and did not know there generators were stolen. This is something we heard when we were without power for several days due to a hurricane. So glad you have a light out there so beware of this scam and I am sure you will hear many more. God bless both of you.
Good job!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good plan!
Buen video será posible por favor enviarme fotos del folleto es que compre uno usado y no lo traia😢
Having a carbon monoxide detector is important.
Just jumped to comments to say the same thing.
Yes, but please do not run any type of gas or diesel engine in your home or any garage that is part of it! And please store gasoline in an outbuilding. Gasoline vapor is extremely flammable and explosive any spark or flame including static electrical spark can ignite it. Hot weather conditions make it even more explosive! Take care and be safe.
Don can u store the generator in the garage with the gas in it will the Film from the gas not seep out I don’t know that’s y I am asking
Let us know how gas last and how it works when you use it.
If you live in Alaska off grid, you put the freezer outside, wouldn't need a generator, ,Don you do what is best for you, it's not our business, ,do you.
Im a nervous wreck about using this. We have ice this weekend. Why does it say on the generator no lights or appliances etc.
Do you have a link to the generator? Thanks!
