  • The Former Synagogue in church street Merthyr was built between 1872 and 1875 in heavy Northern Gothic style. It is the oldest surviving synagogue in Wales and is considered architecturally one of the most important in the UK. It is a grade 2 listed building.
The building is a shadow of its former self but funding has been secured for it's restoration.

'..architecturally one of the most important in the UK'. Why is it boarded up and being left to rot??

Due to dwindling numbers the synagogue was closed in the 1980s and the building was closed and sold. It spent some time as a gymnasium. Before falling out of use. In 2019 it was bought by the foundation of Jewish heritage and they are to carry out works on restoration
