I've been stressing for the past lil while ever since my car broke down in the middle of the highway, this is extremely well documented and organized... Thank you soo much for not being a channel like "Knowledge base" That PT cruiser video literally sent shivers down my spine.
Nice job Matt. You made it look almost effortless. What a difference it makes having no gas in the tank, huh? Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you! Shane of PTBubbles
thank you so much, i dont think i will take on this project for my 2006 pt cruiser by myself, such amazing skills to learn, good job man, question, how did you manage to clean out your tank from the debris we saw after you fully removed the pump.
I just vacuumed it out with a shop vac, I bailed most of the gas out first by hand with a little cup, and then just shop vac'ed the rest clean and dry.
Bro, did you watch the video of the guy who replaced his fuel pump by just removing the back seats? He cut a 9-in x 9 in square hole underneath the seat, exactly where the fuel pump is. He didn't have to drop the fuel tank or anything. It looked really clean. If I got to replace my fuel pump, that's what I'm going to do. I might even pre-cut the hole just to have it all ready for when that day comes.
Sorry but people who do that have no business working on cars... I literally was going to talk about all the reasons why that's a terrible idea in the video but I decided against it because it would give too many people the idea to do it.
@@CarswithNash I'm a retired mechanic that still works on cars some and I have replaced the pump in 4 PT Cruisers by cutting a hole in the floor and it works great with no problems.
@billycook5688 The number one problem is that you are compromising fire protection in the event of a collision, directly over the fuel tank is not a good area to do that especially. Secondly if you don't get it sealed up properly you could have exhaust fumes enter the car through there. I'm certainly not against modifying cars, but never in a way that could potentially compromise their safety. I also just don't understand the reasoning behind it because I actually think it would take longer to change the fuel pump that way, especially if you're going to properly secure and seal that piece back in that you've cut out. Cars that are built with access panels in them have a stamped in reinforced area around the hole where the panel is, the panel itself is normally reinforced as well and held on with multiple screws so that it becomes a strong area of the car that's not likely to be compromised in a collision. If there ever was a collision and somebody was injured as a result of you're modification that could become a very big issue for you.
Is there anyway you can look and see what the wiring harness with the clip plug at the back side of the rack and pinion closest to driver side under driver floor board goes to? Mind has like 4 to 6 wires cut and exposed at the wire plug. One goes to rack and pinion but isn't going to that plug. Thank you and I love your video's 👍
Hi Matt, great video, thank you so much for it. I've got a question my ot cruiser suddenly dies on my while driving. The rpms start to decreased slowly and even if I push the gas pedal it won't let me accelerate. When they rich 0rmp the car is completely dead. i immediately turn the key to ignition and starts perfectly, but the code that shows is the oxigen Sensors though i got the replaced 1 moth ago. What could be the problem? I'll really appreciate your answer thank you so much.
Yeah most fuel pumps go bad right after you have filled up. I replaced the fuel pump in one of my 80's Voyagers and did it where it broke down right in the street. Lots of fun. A star washer under that 10 mm bolt will help in getting a good ground. Is that an old Craftsman 15mm box wrench? Most of my wrenches are Craftsman, I have had very good luck with them. Just wish Sears had not gone down the tubes. Good video. Happy Motoring.
I have a few random Craftsman tools, my very first toolkit I ever got was Craftsman and I always liked them. I have a lot of Stanley tools as well. I don't really believe in buying the big money brand names. Running your car low on gas causes the pump to run hot so often people will go fill up when it's on E and then that happens to be the time that the pump was going out. I had one start to go out on a trip once and it would restart and run for about 10 minutes every 20 minutes had to do that three or four times till I got to a gas station and then I filled the tank right up to keep the pump cool and it got me home. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well Martin.

Hi Matt. I have an question, not realted to the fuel pump. On my dad's PT 2003 both rear windows don't move. I tried switches on the dash and the ones between the seats. I doubt the motors died, as there is little chance both died at the same time. Is there a way to check for the cause without replacing any parts?
@@CarswithNashyea I dropped the tank since the pump seemed to not work but I by passed all the connectors gave the pump power and it started to work so I believe I have an electric problem
I haven't had you on a PT Cruiser but I have on some other cars similar and it's pretty simple. You just have to take out three screws around the filler, you'll probably have to take the gas cap off to get full access to them and then on the bottom end of it there are two hoses going in, a small vent hose and a larger filler hose and both probably have claps you'll have to get off and then work to hoses off. Probably best to start with the hoses and do the three screws after you have the hoses off because you'll have to pull on it quite hard to get the hoses off and it'll be easier if it's on there steady. I believe there's also a plastic shield in front of the hoses up inside the wheel well there that you'll have to remove, that will have a bunch of plastic push clips.
Hi Matt a little off topic i have a pt gt 04 and the Auto lock are going crazy i replaced the heater core and after it started doing this crazy thing. Any ideas thanks so much
I think it's probably a coincidence with the other work you have done and unrelated, it's probably just a bad door switch that is losing contact and causing the car to think the door is opening momentarily. I had this exact thing happen on my Dodge Neon years back and that was the cause.
@@AlexRubio Make sure the metal where the switch contacts on the door is not dented in, sometimes that happens, people slam the door so hard the switch actually dents in the metal and then it doesn't end up pushing the switch all the way in, if you determine that is the cause the quick solution is to build up the area with a little masking tape to bring it back up to where it used to be.

Not worth to do it; you still need to lower/remove the tank to cut a hole, in that case you just replace the whole pump and put the tank back!
