Love this band and Miles was one of my favorite singers. First Glance was my introduction here in the US 1978. I was 17. Went out and bought the complete catalog. Bought everything after. Saw them twice. Wished it was more. They definitely should have been bigger! My favorite track, Crash and Burn! RIP Miles, Gary and Jim!
Another day and more sad news. Thanks for your memories which mirror mine. Saw them twice, once at the Bham Odeon the other, in Toronto whilst on holiday. Kind regards
A good tribute to one of Canada`s greatest song writers and a wicked guitarist. ( plus a good mellotron player.) My love for April Wine is deep. Listen to On Record or Electric Jewels. A young band with great talent. Being Canadian, I must have seen April Wine every year since 1988 in some different venue or another. From concert halls to outdoor festivals to private corporate parties to town fairs. They always were loud and amazing. And they played 20th Century Schizoid Man every time. Fantastic. Thank you Phil. We all wish you well. I`ve been listening to all my April Wine albums all day ( with a pint or 2 )
Well stated Phil. Thank you for this touching tribute to Myles Goodwin. Growing up in Canada, for me, Myles & April Wine were a big part of the soundtrack of my life in the mid-70s to early 80's. They did Canada proud. R.I.P. Myles 🍁
Sad news, I was born in 58 so was around to catch all these bands back in the day. Rush lead me other Canadian band April Wine & Triumph being just 2 of them, now lost count of the different bands….great music and some fantastic albums. RIP
I have 3 LPs from April Wine and today I spun all three in memory of Myles Goodwyn. First, First Glance, then Harder...Faster and finished with The Nature of the Beast. First place in my heart is shared by First Glance and Harder... Faster, really great albums!
Hi there,Phil. Growing up in Atlantic Canada,April Wine was one of the musical cornerstones of my youth. I first saw the band in 1978 on the First Glance at Newfoundland tour, which made a stop in my home town,Corner Brook. Huge production elements; pyro,mult-tiered stage As well,AW boasted the 3 guitar attack of Myles Goodwyn,Brian Greenway and Gary Moffat. Roller was their current single, and the guys pulled out all the stops on that set-closer. I saw AW again in 1983 on the Power Play tour. Once more,it featured a huge stage ,production,& blistering guitars....especially featured on 21st Century Schizoid Man.. I moved to Toronto in 1985.I've seen April Wine twice since then, once in a bar and once at a Summer Festival. By 2007,Myles and Co, had settled into a Greatest Hits set list, which went over very well. The big stages and production values were long gone, but the solid musicianship remained. I own the complete AW discography, including the pre-Capitol years as well as Myles' 2 more recent solo Friends of the Blues CDs. I would imagine that any Canadian kid who first picked up a guitar in the 70s tried to learn at least 1 Myles Goodwyn song. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, fans and former bandmates.
Phil, hats off for doing this video. Love Myles and one of the fortunate who saw April Wine. I hope this video will inspire the younger generation to seek this band out.🙏🏻💔
Hi Phil beautiful tribute of a band near and dear to my heart. They are Canadian as I am. Always adored his voice songwriting and both the rockers and ballads in equal measure. Part of the important soundtrack of my life. Beautiful tribute snd love the way you dedicate these videos to the families and fans. Another sad thing.... they really deserved even more popularity. R.I.P. Myles. Thank you Phil for another perfect tribute.
First heard April Wine many years ago on Planet Rock and was hooked immediately and managed to track down all their back catalogue. They were just a great band with some really cracking music. We keep losing these great artists, it seems at a rapid rate but at least we have the legacy of their music to keep their memory alive and hopefully future generations will discover the great wealth of talented artists who came out of the 60's, 70's and 80's.
I had not heard of Myles Goodwyn's passing until this video popped up in my recommendations. May his soul rest in peace. I will make a point of spinning some April Wine this week in his memory. 😔
Very Nice Phil! Only saw them out here once, support for Foreigner on the Head Games tour. What a great double-bill that was!! Good memories of a great & underappreciated band. Cheers from Central California!
Hi Phil, Thank you for doing nice April Wine/Myles Goodwyn tribute. I didn't know that AW. had an impact in the UK. I'm Canadian and have been buying AW records since their first hit single "Fast Train" back in 1971. I think that I have all of their original vinyl LP releases. They had many excellent albums prior to their Capitol classic rock period. I saw them 3 times in concert. In 1973, they were the opening act for Marc Bolan/T-Rex and Three Dog Night in Toronto. AW were so good that Bolan was booed off the stage. He just couldn't follow them. A year later, I saw AW headline at a local high school dance on a hot summer night. We could get right up close to the stage and they blew the doors off that night. One of the finest live performances that I've ever seen. I saw them one final time a few years later playing in a hockey arena. The music was great but it lacked the intimacy of the previous performance. I was very surprised and saddened to hear yesterday that Myles had died. There is no April Wine without him.
So overlooked in America, somehow fell through the cracks. Legends, if not, gods in Canada. A great live band with various speeds. Thanks for the tunes Myles we will always have the tunes.
Oh cool. Really like this band and saw them a few times in the early 80’s in London and I saw them at the monsters of rock in 1980. Very underrated imho
I had the flyer of a concert with APRIL WINE and Krokus I think in 1979, but I was too young and it was about 90 km away... so being in Germany I NEVER saw the band live, as they hardly played here. Got all the records from "First glance" onward... My favorite track is "Silver dollar", just played it now... Thank you very much, Myles Goodwin, for all the great music! May you rest in peace
Nice tribute, Phil. My very first concert was April Wine/Uriah Heep in 1982. Saw them again 1996 with BOC and Nazareth. Amazing shows. I met him and the band that time. Very cool guys. He will be missed.
Saw April Wine live for the first time in 1981 on The Nature of The Beast Tour in Toronto at the CNE. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Bar none! My favourite album from them is First Glance (1977) not a bad track on it. RIP Myles
Very sad news indeed. Spot on tribute Phil. Your comments about the (perhaps greater) importance of remembering the so perceived “3rd tier” artists certainly gave me pause for thought. Strawberry jam is one of the lesser ingredients in terms of volume when I bake my Victoria Sponge but if I were to forget it I’d be left with a bland and boring sponge. My perception is that they were 3rd tier as well but still no lesser a band whom I liked rocking out to. So the equal importance you place in marking the demise of anyone from our youth is a good lesson to learn. In the 80s they were entertaining lurkers half shadowed in my NWOBHM collection. To forget them is a disservice to my own memories, as well as the band. I saw them at the Bristol Colston Hall in 81 or 82 and many good memories have just flooded back to me. They were supported by the even more lowly A2Z who were so good that my mates and I got tickets to see Girlschool at the Bath Pavillon primarily for A2Z. So I shall dig out my copy of “The Nature of the Beast” tonight for Myles but hopefully also to reignite and restore my memories. Thanks Phil.
Thank you for the tribute Phil. Growing up in Montreal I underappreciated them. Saw them only because Johnny Winter opened. Let's not get into that. However, they put on a great show. Miles was an amazing singer and an underrated guitar player, by myself included. My favourite April Wine song is Wings of Love from the Whole World's Going Crazy album. Recommend searching out UA-cam for them playing in London. That was pretty much the show I remember. My condolences to his family and friends.
I was at that Reading University gig in 1980 that was filmed for "Rock Goes To College" and became the bonus CD in the most recent April Wine box set - it was an awesome gig. I meet "the lads" for a beer in Reading a couple of times a year and we always get onto the topic of music as we quaff our pints of real ale and that April Wine gig ALWAYS gets brought into the conversation as one of the greats. I did think they also played Reading Festival in 1980 but you corrected me by confirming it was Monsters Of Rock they played at - it was a great line up there too, even though I missed that year. I am with you on Harder... Faster... being the first album to reach for though that whole period in that box set is their best stuff. But having said that, the albums before and after it are good also. RIP Myles Goodwyn.
I’m Canadian and grew up always hearing April Wine, but I didn’t appreciate the band until I was at a restaurant/club for a birthday here in Ottawa 20 years ago. I was waiting at the bar and ran into some older guys I knew from high school. They were both there to see April wine. I said “really?!?” But they both said the band is much, much better than I think. After that I recognised them way more often and bought their albums. I regret not seeing them live as it wasn’t too hard to see them around these parts. I’m truly sad Myles died.
I've only heard Harder... Faster myself which I have on good old cassette recorded from a mates LP (and it's great). I'm sure I saw them at the time of that LP release as a support band but I can't remember who. I'll have to check out my programme collection and hopefully find out who it was. 👍
For a 70 year old Maritimer, April Wine was the soundtrack of my teenage years. Saw them for the first time in 1971, still remember this Halifax concert when the Henman brothers were members. Thanks Myles for the talent, creativity, passion and longevity you brought to the rock world. You wrote some of the most memorable rock ballads which will never be forgotten...RIP.
April Wine, their albums weren’t perfect but I bought them back in the day and enjoyed them. Particularly their earlier albums like On Record and Electric Jewels. I saw them for the Nature of the Beast tour in Montreal. I remember being really impressed with their show. Another part of my youth gone. RIP Myles.
Sad to hear this news….being a Canadian kid AW were an essential band on our home country airwaves…their early records are great as well ( Standback, Electric Jewels etc) and AW Greatest Hits was played in many cars and living rooms across the country..they could rock and Myles could write a terrific ballad, second to none….these artist need to be celebrated and recognized , well said Phil…RIP Myles, live on your music and AW….
Great tribute Phil, discovered April Wine after buying the Monsters of Rock L.P. and backtracked . My copy of the I like to rock 4 track has an alternate cover featuring live shots of the band , I'll have to check if its an import. Cool band should have been bigger
On the strength of the awesome single, 'Just between you and me,' I bought 'Nature of the Beast ,' when it came out. I knew nothing about them and let the music do the talking. 'The infectious 'Telling me lies,' and 'Sign of the gypsy queen,' were highlights for me. A hurricane at the very least.
I'm from Canada and have been a fan of theirs since I first heard the song Bad side of the moon that was on a compilation album that K-TEL (a Canadian company) put out in the early 70s and although I found out it was a cover song I just loved their version and it just grew from there so when KISS started going off the radar in north America in 1978 I bought First Glance and they took over as my favorite band at least until 1983 and saw them many times during this period. Its just hard to believe he's gone but he left a huge amount of music that won't be forgotten anytime soon ad for those who only know the albums from the pinnacle of their successful years try to search out the other ones on UA-cam because those songs in most cases are just as good. RIP Myles
I have not located a copy of the cherry red box set you have, and I live in canada, there is a video that was put together recently after his passing and is well done ua-cam.com/video/7mNcYVAm8u4/v-deo.htmlsi=uyl4nyBJl2Ec1H0P@@NowSpinningMagazine
I was DJ. during the 80s at the legendary Highwayman Rock club in Staffordshire. We played Sign of the Gypsy Queen regularly. Always a floor filler. Forgot how good they were until you reminded me.
I love this band, I have few of their albums 'nature of the beast', 'harder faster', 'animal grace', 'power play'. In my opinion only but I could be wrong, but Myles Goodwyn is the only singer that sounds a little similar to Ian Gillan. RIP Myles one of my favorite rock singer.
Thanks for doing this, Phil! We're so proud of April Wine here in Montreal, but it sometimes seems like they never got a fair shake elsewhere. On the money as always, I completely agree with your choice of best album and song. By the way, I see that Remember the Future 50th box set in the background. I've got one of those coming in the mail. Any chance we'll get a video on that one soon? All the best!
R.I.P Myles , a true legend . Canadian rock at its finest . God bless Phil.
Thanks Phil from Canada..Harder Faster for sure
My first concert. Saw them in Sudbury and was blown away. My favorite Canadian band. Still listen to them at least once a week. RIP Myles.
Loved April Wine, great songwriter.
Very sad news. April Wine was huge here in Canada and glad they also had some success worldwide. Great tribute!
Thank you 🙏
Power Play was my 1st April Wine album i bought when it was released back in the days. I still enjoy to listen it nowadays.😃👍
Thank you for bringing lesser “recognized” bands to the forefront. April Wine were one such band. Harder Faster is fantastic!
Another day and more sad news. Thanks for your memories which mirror mine. Saw them twice, once at the Bham Odeon the other, in Toronto whilst on holiday. Kind regards
Saw them live three times in the 70's. Electric Jewels, Stand Back and Whole World's Going Crazy tours. They were fantastic each time.
I have that box set highly recommended. Rest in eternal peace Myles. 😞The Captain
An underrated band that should have been bigger than they were. Thank you for the tribute.

A prolific song writer and a fine band!!!

Thanks. Myles was an immense talent and April Wine were fantastic.
You sir are a gem paying tribute like this to such an underrated artist!god bless !
Thanks for the tribute, Phil. Shout out too for his 1988 self-titled solo album...
Good job Phil. For me I go all the way back to the Electric Jewels album from around 1972 as.one of my favorites!
A true Canadian legend! The hard rock and amazing vocals will be missed - RIP
'Gimme Love' was the song that got me hooked
Sad news, I was born in 58 so was around to catch all these bands back in the day. Rush lead me other Canadian band April Wine & Triumph being just 2 of them, now lost count of the different bands….great music and some fantastic albums. RIP
Yeah all those bands are fantastic. Coney hatch also

The holy trinity of albums 👍
