I meet the Alta Labs guys last year there ex Ubiquiti Enginners. Self hosted controller is currently in Beta. I've been running them at home myself for the last 6 months, compared to my U6 pro the speed probly about the same but range is diffently a large improvement, I've one I the house and one in a out door box in the garden.
Linus' writers are genius. April fools on us with the videos. April fools on all the employees by making them work in the Langley house. I hope it continues into tomorrow with the other channels and videos.
Great April fools; total commitment! Side note - I've been using some of the Alta Labs gear at home for a while now - it's been rock solid and definitely happy with my purchase! The UI is also pretty user friendly!
Redundant PSU on a pro-sumer/SoHo Enterprise ACCESS switch might be a high ask tbh.. You dont see those on your Ciscos, Junipers, Arubas until you spend a fair amount.
I like how the switch can change colour of the lights because then you can have a different colour switch for voip, then different for servers, then the main everyday computers on a different colour also
The remote management I have seen on computers at my work (ITAD) is crazy. I have an iPad Air 2 I've had for years and years that I bought from work. Went to factory reset it to gift it to my mom. BOOM, client lock from some school district across the country.
The software DRM is probably well intended but naw man. It's a rack mounted switch my dude not an iPhone at a bar, no-one is going to try and steal one. It just turns this into ewaste unless the owner remembers to disconnect their account. Which I can see happening if a company goes under and their IT equipment gets sold at auction. Meanwhile the company where that IT person worked is gone.
Yep, this type of DRM just means most companies and IT people will avoid it like crazy. Absolutely no resale value since buyers can't trust the seller to unlock it and high cost because you pretty much have no option but to buy new unless you want to risk getting a locked one. The only time this type of DRM should take effect, even with phones, is if the owner actually reports the serial number as stolen and even then there should be a process to handle proving that the item is not stolen and was purchased legally.
Yeah it's a complete deal breaker. Physical access should always mean all access. If someone broke into your datacenter and stole your switch you have way way way bigger problems on your hands
Or its so when you reset the device is reconnects to your account so you can easily reconfigure it? Eg. remote branch office, have user perform reset, head office IT will see it reappear and they can reapply the config? Its not DRM
@@semaja2If its not DRM then you shouldn't need the previous account to allow it to be reconfigured after a factory reset. And Jake demonstrated that it still showed up just fine after a factory reset for it to be configured without any need for the old account to be tied to it, IT JUST WOULDN'T LET HIM DUE TO THE DRM.
The account lock feature is available for both APs and switches connected to our cloud, but will not be available for devices connected to local controllers. Also, the old user can easily click a single link to release it. No login, etc necessary.
@@jeff-hansen That's all nice in most cases, but at some point these devices will end up sold as used, discarded for recycling, a disgruntled network admin will leave the company with management creds... There *needs* to be a way to unlock the device, even if it's not as simple as pressing the reset button. Maybe a 48 hour lockout period? Or a jumper on the motherboard? The responsible thing to do is to offer such an option, but my inner cynic says that further use of old devices provides zero or negative value to your company, so that won't happen. Prove me wrong!
@@dvdkon7165 There is definitely a process for unlocking a device, i.e. if you can just reach out to support and prove physical ownership of the device it is possible to unlock it.
