But someone has to program that, it's not like you crack fingers and it's magically done. I am wokring on CNC machines and I am always annoyed from that people who think it can work by some magical brain connection and do what I am thinking about. :-D Sometimes make good program takes more time than do it manually, so it's good mostly only for mass production, not for piece production. But laser cutter is probably much simplier than 5 axis CNC I am workin on. With metal, there is also advantage that you don't have to care about wood structure and such things because with wood you have to program that carefuly and test is properly before you start mass production. There are ways how to skip manual text programing, but program it manualy is better in wood work because random automaticaly created program from some 3D model doesn't respect structure of wood and it's not optimised for nice looking product but mostly for less number of changing tools etc...You have to still change speeds, set tools and change order of steps so I think it's better program it manualy from start.

I'm right behind you a common miss conception a morning Star is a spike ball at the end of a pole, a mace is the same with studs rather than spikes, and a flail is a morning star or mace on a chain.

Well, usable flails nearly always had a solid handle that was longer than the chain so you weren’t in much danger of hurting yourself unless you choked up on it. Which there wouldn’t be any reason to do because the motion of the end of the handle is the only thing giving the ball its momentum.
@@thevoicej2511 Historical flails didn't even have a chain and ball, that's a victorian anachronistic idea. Flails consisted of a long and a short stick with only a single chain link as a pivot point. That's why chain and ball flails are so impractical, they weren't a historical weapon.
joost1120 I’m not sure you’re correct here, what are your sources? I know the kind of flail you mean and yes, it’s a lot more common but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that ball and chain flails weren’t ever historical weapons. In fact I’m pretty sure there are a few historical finds that would contradict that. Also, a ball and chain flail isn’t actually that impractical, I’ve used one myself and it worked fine. It’s just got the same problem as maces, axes, or any top heavy weapon where it lacks maneuverability. It does uniquely lack a lot range when it’s not in motion.
@@thevoicej2511 The only evidence we have of flails with a ball and chain are from the renaissance, not medieval times. Those have a very short chain, only about 3 links. The longest find has 6 links. I've used a flail with a long chain (ball reached just above the grip) before, and it works. It's not much more than that. Like you say, it lacks maneuverability, you can't really adapt to your opponent's moves. This problem is not shared with maces or axes. Neither maces nor axes are this top heavy. Mace heads rarely exceed 500g in weight, with many being between 200-400g. Martial axes generally have thin blades intended for cutting, not for splitting, and tend to weigh very little as well.
joost1120 are you certain that the problem wasn’t with your flail’s weight then? I mean lacking maneuverability in that they cannot be maneuvered like most swords. It’s hard to switch your direction quickly because of the weight distribution, not just the weight. I do agree that flails suffer more from this because of the chain and the inconsistent momentum. But that is far from making it unusable. Also I don’t think I’ve ever specified that it was a medieval weapon. I also didn’t say they were particularly long, I even specified that they would be short so they didn’t reach the users hand.
It's kind-of funny that "Morningstar" is armed with a ball and chain flail (the lantern is the "ball"), rather than a morningstar (a spikey-headed solid club).

Well, usable flails nearly always had a solid handle that was longer than the chain so you weren’t in much danger of hurting yourself unless you choked up on it. Which there wouldn’t be any reason to do because the motion of the end of the handle is the only thing giving the ball its momentum.
@@thevoicej2511 Historical flails didn't even have a chain and ball, that's a victorian anachronistic idea. Flails consisted of a long and a short stick with only a single chain link as a pivot point. That's why chain and ball flails are so impractical, they weren't a historical weapon.
joost1120 I’m not sure you’re correct here, what are your sources? I know the kind of flail you mean and yes, it’s a lot more common but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that ball and chain flails weren’t ever historical weapons. In fact I’m pretty sure there are a few historical finds that would contradict that. Also, a ball and chain flail isn’t actually that impractical, I’ve used one myself and it worked fine. It’s just got the same problem as maces, axes, or any top heavy weapon where it lacks maneuverability. It does uniquely lack a lot range when it’s not in motion.
@@thevoicej2511 The only evidence we have of flails with a ball and chain are from the renaissance, not medieval times. Those have a very short chain, only about 3 links. The longest find has 6 links.
I've used a flail with a long chain (ball reached just above the grip) before, and it works. It's not much more than that. Like you say, it lacks maneuverability, you can't really adapt to your opponent's moves. This problem is not shared with maces or axes. Neither maces nor axes are this top heavy. Mace heads rarely exceed 500g in weight, with many being between 200-400g. Martial axes generally have thin blades intended for cutting, not for splitting, and tend to weigh very little as well.
joost1120 are you certain that the problem wasn’t with your flail’s weight then? I mean lacking maneuverability in that they cannot be maneuvered like most swords. It’s hard to switch your direction quickly because of the weight distribution, not just the weight. I do agree that flails suffer more from this because of the chain and the inconsistent momentum. But that is far from making it unusable. Also I don’t think I’ve ever specified that it was a medieval weapon. I also didn’t say they were particularly long, I even specified that they would be short so they didn’t reach the users hand.
