Bless up, finally someone who realizes that the game reveals faces as soon as it gives you the info to determine who someone is, and then actually uses it! Sooo many people don't and then get stuck on people like Brennan later.
One detail most people missed is that the Formosans speak Taiwanese, which is close to but isn't really Mandarin. Whenever the Formosans speak there is a Chinese man trying to translate between English and Taiwanese, and he sometimes slipped out a couple word in Mandarin when he doesn't know the proper word in Taiwanese. As a Taiwanese who speaks Mandarin and a bit Taiwanese, the sentences and accents are scarily accurate. Wonderfully surprised by that representation in my playthrough. Still couldn't distinguish the three Chinese topmen tho.
Lucas went out of his way to get the right people to help him out on this. As he was working on it, some Taiwanese guy replied to him on twitter saying "I like your prototype but bro, those ain't Taiwanese names", so they collaborated to make it work better
21:20 Fun fact: the game accepts multiple answers for the characters’ fates in scenarios where it isn’t clear which would be the better way to describe it.
Coming here to say ive never played this game (been on my wishlist a while) but the nature of these uploads reminds me of Outer Wilds. And that alone is enough to get me buying this game and watching once im done lol
There are a couple more playthroughs that would make great Supercuts: BeccaBytes, Raocow, and Playframe have really good Outer Wilds playthroughs, and Playframe also did well with Tunic and Obra Dinn (edit: I see you've already done the Playframe Outer Wilds cut, but the rest I think still stand)
Worth noting in that insurance assessment, this is back when a British pound meant the literal equivalent value of a pound of silver. About $500 USD at time of writing this comment. Which would make a fine of 25 pounds approximately $12,500.
@@brendanmysteryThere are 4 Chinese topmen, and out of the 4, one can be identified more or less easy, the other 3 either you brute force it or you go crazy trying to decipher who is who because the actual way of solving it is ridiculously subtle that many people just miss the hint (like me hehe).
Less racist and more "understand historical context" Multiple guys who look similar, are drawn together, sleep near each other? They're probably from the same place or speak the same language. Looks like a French stereotype? That was a French Navy uniform, sailors visit many ports. One thing I like about the game is the little stories about the men who defy the racist/colonialist doctrine of England at the time by being friends. George and Wei Lee. Winston and Marcus.
Eh. It looks nicer in game - UA-cam compression really tears the aesthetic up. Still, some people have complained the active dithering this game does gives them nausea, but I quite liked the effect when I was playing.
I think it's an amazing effect. A 1-bit colour 3d renderer is such a cool thing, it's like noir cell-shading but with wireframes. I think it really captures the violence of blood being splashed or smoke being shot with just a still scene.
the game does also have the option of changing the screen type to other vintage computer systems. i put mine on this bluish one which felt nicer to play
The shotgun shell mystery is just as good as the mole people

That last sentence is so real. Really cool detail to know about tho, thanks

I'M OBRA DINNING PEOPLE, RUN.
When she obra on my dinn until I return
I was always so salty how NO "mainstream" UA-camrs played this game, but these cuts have been such a life saver!
"What the hell is Formosa?"
Ooh, this is going to be fun.
"So I guess the Formosan knows Mandarin"
I do wonder how many people knew what Formosa was when they saw it. I assume a very low amount.
@@Yashirmarethe same amount of people with minimal knowledge about east Asia colonization.
He... appears to be so intelligent. It took me WAAAAY longer to start putting things together

Such a pet peeve I have with obra dinn playthroughs is with how they spamclick when a connecting to another body in a death
Hey! Someone getting Charles Minor right on the first go. His name wasn't even unblured!

wait does the player character's voice change somehow? I definitely remember a male voice
When you start a playthrough it randomly assigns the inspector's gender
@@iris-hyrcanafun fact, this caused the game to be “somewhat woke” in the woke game list

Ah yes the Return of the Racist Detective. Seriously tho, I adore this game but thr chinese workers where a nightmare. Even the tattoo'd one.

Maba was one of the first I got exactly because of that, lol.
I love how it's almost impossible to finish Obra Dinn without being a little racist.
Stereotypes are valid first order approximations
Lol true
