- Ukraine says Russia has launched a new ground offensive on the country's northeastern border, advancing about a kilometer inside Ukraine. Officials say there was massive shelling in the town of Vovchansk, near the city of Kharkiv. Ukraine has rushed reinforcements to the region to shore up local defenses. Ukrainian forces are evacuating residents and at least one civilian has been killed in the shelling. Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenksyy says the military had anticipated the attack and "a fierce battle" is underway.

Bad analogy. What they've been doing is pressing the entire front, looking for a soft spot. They found it at Avdiivka. Ukraine waited far too long to address it, then pulled troops from the north to reinforce it and now Russia is mauling Chasiv Yar and moving on Kharkiv. If Ukraine tries to redeploy to reinforce either of those, the Donetsk AO will be overrun. The analogy is more like whack-a-mole.

This northern front should be expected. It could be a real offensive line or it could be just a ruse, so that the Russian army can advance in the eastern front. In any case, if Kharkiv is taken, Ukraine’s defense will be collapsing and the end of the war will come soon.
Based on my knowledge (which I will confess I am not super wise or skilled like others who have years), you are correct, but there's more to it from what I am seeing on the map and troop movements. Also, if Kharkiv falls (which I'm predicting will), it will have an impact but there's more to it.
To me: This is a new front to draw troops away from the Eastern Luhansk front. With less troops and defenses, The Luhansk front will be harder to defend by Ukrainians. Also, even if they do hold, Kharkiv is more vital to defend. If Kharkiv falls and a few more vital towns south and southeast fall, then militarily this battle/war is officially over as Ukraine will be in a massive retreat out of the East and Dnipro, Pavlohrad will become frontier cities. This Russian offensive has many various reasons as to why this is vital (especially the highway that's there).
Overall: This new offensive push is to either successfully capture Kharkiv (symbolic and politically victory) and to draw away more units from the Eastern Luhansk front. If the Southern fronts move troops, then this will not end well for Ukraine regardless.

Once Kharkiv falls, it will be a panic retreating to the Ukrainian army. History has shown numerous examples of how an army is routed.

They did mine the borders. But the border is a very wide area too. Many of the mines are further in too. 1 km in is nothing. Kharkiv is 40 km from the border. So artillery systems won't reach that far.
