  • We like nice things but we can't afford them unless we make them! And this time we make a beautiful butcher block eat at island counter top for under $500. So far we are still under our total kitchen budget of $5,000 :-)

    ▬ ABOUT US ▬
We are Rich & Kathie, a retired couple building our dream home: A SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENT OFF GRID earth sheltered home in the Adirondacks!
The house will be covered with about 30" of soil which helps to maintain an internal temperature between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in winter & summer respectively. This means that in the winter we will only need minimal heat that we plan to provide with a small wood burning stove and we shouldn't need any air conditioning in the summer at all!
With inflation right now, the energy efficiency of this house is a HUGE Plus! But, it also means that we have a super tight budget that is getting tighter by the day. For this reason we DIY everything we reasonably can and find creative ways to save money such as repurposing.
Please subscribe and join us to see how we manage the challenges of staying in budget and exactly how energy efficient this house actually is when it is done!
We appreciate all your support :-)

The wife has been patiently waiting to make her own countertops. She's going to use some maple we've cut from our property that we're taking to a local Amish sawyer to have cut into 2 1/4" slabs that we'll cut down to size and glue together for a butcher block counter. We LOVE the coffee cup nook in the wall you did! Your place is really coming together beautifully. And we know the pain of the daily checklist too. We finally took some time off this winter to recharge and get a jump on things with a fresh attitude after 18 months of non-stop building. One of these days we'll need to take a trip in your direction and stop by for a coffee..

    Nice work, looks great.
Rich stop putting your fingers in front of your saw please, i've seen anyone do that. My uncle use to be a custom cabinet maker in Merrick, had his shop on Sunrise Hwy, never saw him cut wood like that. Ok lecture over. Lol

This was a "nail-biter" to watch; but, the two of you have nerves of steel and pulled off the entire countertop and sink installation like Pros. It looks wonderful - congratulations.

Super job! We put a Home Depot butcher block countertop on our island, too. We didn't do any of the good work you did like rounded corners and rounder edges and putting in a sink. We did screw in some small metal plates because (on ours) one the wood pieces started to separate. Maybe some small metal plates in front of the sink to insure the wood pieces don't separate there over time? Just a suggestion.
