1. Octopus
2. Three Friends
3. The Power and the Glory
An impossible task but:
Free Hand
Octopus
Power & the Glory
You got it right, Scot. Proud of you.
I thought you might have In a Glass House, but I guess that's really splitting hairs.
My favorites, especially P&tG.
I'm with Ken
3. Octopus
2. Free Hand
1. Power and the Glory
Might not make it back in time. How I hear them:
3. Power and the Glory
2. Free Hand
1. In a Glass House
Back in the early 70's when in my late teens I saw a Gentle Giant gig at a local venue. At the time they didn't make a huge impact on me & I dismissed them for the next 50 years. I have to thank Sea of Tranquillity as its the enthusiasm of the participants that made me investigate their albums and much to my surprise I found I really liked them. I've bought the double pack CD of Three Friends & Octopus and its become a firm favourite, Seeking out live recordings on You tube I realise what I obviously didn't get at the time. Thanks guys
I love the panel (nice to see you Luis) and I love Gentle Giant
👍
1. Acquiring The Taste
2. Octopus
3. Interview
Right now I would say:
3. Free Hand
2. Three Friends

Top 3 (Subject to Change!)
1. Octopus
2. Free Hand
3. Aquiring the Taste
Cant go wrong with any (Except that one we dont talk about...😂😂)
I agree with those three classic GG albums, except for me the order will be; 1. Aquiring the Taste, 2. Octopus, 3. Free Hand.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Nice man!
3. Free Hand
2. Three Friends
1. Acquiring the Taste
@@augustyoung9582 Great list! Three Friends and Glass House are so close to being in mine love them so much
1. Acquiring The Taste
2. Giant For A Day
3. Gentle Giant
I will always defend Giant For A Day as I think its more of a straight ahead rock album with touches of prog. I LOVE the title track.
I really like it too, it's accessible yet proggy same with The Missing Piece.
Yes I like Spooky Boogie especially
There are some really good songs on GFaD
1) The Power and the Glory (1974)
2) Octopus (1972) / Three Friends (1972)
3) Acquiring the Taste (1971)
1. In a Glass House
2. Acquiring the Taste
3. Octopus
I concur with everyone mentioning the difficulty in ranking the albums in GG's phenomenal catalogue; I was so tempted to add _at least_ two more to the above list.
Great episode.
1. Power and the Glory (first one I heard)
2. Free Hand
3. Octopus (The classic one)
1. Three Friends
2. Octopus

Thanks for the show guys, awesome as always!
Any album from Aqcuiring the Taste up to Free Hand could easily have been in my top 3 (damn hard assignment lol).
1. Octopus
2. Three Friends
3. Acquiring The Taste
If I had to name 3... but really there is little between those first 6 or 7 albums, all great!
1. Three Friends
2. Acquiring The Taste
3. Octopus
The first Giant album I bought was Acquiring... used on vinyl. It took some time to get into it The second one I bought was Three Friends. I really like it. I have a lot of history with those albums.
Great show thank you guys! Great idea as GG as the wedding band , they can play my next lol!
Pete, it’s interesting that you say acquiring the taste is one of the tougher listens. It has been my favorite for the past year or so. I think it’s actually one of the most accessible. Oh well what do I know! Looking at the comments I see it being ranked pretty highly.
Anyway, thanks for the show guys.
Tougher as in being one of the most dissonant and complex…great album, but not one I’d suggest as a first listen to GG.
Boy this is a hard choice. Love them all, but my Top 3 this week are:
3 - Octopus
2 - The Power and the Glory
1 - Three Friends
Gentle Giant are my favorite band.
1. In A Glass House
2. Octopus
3. Acquiring the Taste - because it’s a _little_ different.
1. Acquiring the Taste
2. In a Glass House
3. The Power and the Glory
GREAT show! Love Gentle Giant.
1 In a Glass House
2 Octopus
3 Aquiring the Taste
1. Three friends
2.Glass House
3. Octopus
Playing the fool (double live) is one of the BEST live album by any band on par with Live and Dangerous, Live at Leeds and Stranger In the Night . Octopus is the other great .
1. Interview
2. Three Friends
3. Octopus
Ooooo. This is tough! Not counting the live album, which would be my #1.
1. Freehand
2. Acquiring The Taste
3. Power and the Glory
Great episode! Love me some Gentle Giant talk, even though I haven't actually heard all their albums even to this day. But I'm familiar with the core part of the catalog and my three favs are
1. Octopus (this was my introduction to the band in 2005)
2. Free Hand
3. Three Friends
For a LONG time, all I owned was a double album compilation called "Giant Steps: The First Five Years" , and the live Playing the Fool (also a double album). Both were prized possessions in my collection. Eventually I got poor quality tape copies of Three Friends and Free Hand. Thanks to the Prog Seat panel I have explored most of the discography all over again and I've found a lot more to like than I thought I would. Amazingly, I even acquired the taste for Acquiring the Taste! So thanks gentlemen, for that.
Though it may already be in the works, I must mention that I would love to see a 'Top 3 Favorite Albums' episode for King Crimson.
acquirring the taste, the debut, in a glass house
1. Octopus
2. Power &the Glory
3. Freehand
Chuck Alvarez repping Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 it's always good to see another Afro latino brother
Thanks mi hermano, actually my wife is Puerto Rican, my parents are Hondureno.
Trivia: Illustrator Michael Doret designed the lettering on the cover of “Octopus” by Gentle Giant and also created the cover of “Rock and Roll Over” by Kiss.
Power and the Glory #1! Then after some combination of Acquiring the Taste, Octopus, and Free Hand. 3 Friends has been moving up in the rankings for me in recent times as well. Proclamation is THE quintessential song for Gentle Giant imo
The show was very good. Now I have an idea of albums to start with. I have never listened to a Gentle Giant album before.
👍
So nice so see those experts talk with so much love and passion about this unique band. Thanks a lot!
My ranking:
#3 In a Glass House
#2 Three Friends
#1 Octopus
But my absolute favorite in their catalogue is "Playing the fool" which didn't make my ranking because it's a live album. But for me it is the missing piece (pardon that pun) because you would never think that these complicated songs can be played live even better than in the studio versions unless you listened to this amazing record. For a newbie I would always recommend "Playing the fool".
Thank you 👍
1. The power and the glory 1. Octopus and 1. In a glass house!!! Would love to see you do a Grobschnitt show!
Even after getting into Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson etc. etc. it took a little bit of work and effort to get into Gentle Giant.
Then they clicked and ruined the rest of music for me forever 😂 What a band. Everything from Acquiring the Taste to Free Hand is 10/10 for me.
Love Gentle Giant, thank you gentlemen. 1. Octopus
2. Three Friends
3. The Power and the Glory
In a Glass House
Acquiring the taste
Power and The Glory
1.Power & the Glory
2.Acquring The Taste
3.Octopus
I agree with Ken about the top 3 although the album I listen to most is the live double Playing The Fool.
Hard task, but, for now:
1. Acquiring The Taste
2. The Power And The Glory
3. Three Friends
I don't really get the thing about AtT not being very accessible, I'd totally give it to a first time listener dipping into prog it has all the elements that define GG and the genre it's complex though not overly so and very melodic all the way they have more complex albums like Interview or In a Glass House, compared to those AtT is almost a pop album. lol I've been worshiping this haunting album for years now... 🤤
1)The Power And The Glory
2) Octopus
3) Three Friends
Everything else(except the obviously bad one) tied for 4th
1 Power and the Glory
2 Free hand
3 In a glass house
I like them all actually, very difficult task, but those three are the ones i play most
I don't have any GG, have to rectify that. God bless all
3. Three Friends
2. Octopus
1. Free Hands
Saw them in the old Balboa Stadium in San Diego in July 1976 with Gary Wright, Peter Frampton and Yes. What a beautiful day for an outstanding concert.
Along with Luis, the three of us have the same three albums in that order.
3. Octopus
2. Three Friends
1. Free Hand
Free Hand was the first one I ever heard, and initially, I couldn’t stand it. I even tried to return the record to the store. I found out decades later that there was an American pressing of the record that’s known for terrible sound - so that’s what I had. Then, years later, I heard “Free Hand” the song again, on the Supernatural Fairy Tales prog box set that Rhino put together, and that time, I loved it. After that, I had to have everything. BTW, my true number one is the live album, Playing the Fool. It’s incredible.
Another excellent show. Great job men
Like you guys my list always changes but for today:
1. Octopus
2. Three Friends
3. Free Hand
1. In a Glass
2. Free Hand
3. Octopus
4. Three Friends❤
Free Hand
Power And The Glory
Three Friends
For me it would probably be:
1. Free Hand
2. In A Glass House
3. Octopus
My first Gentle Giant album was Playing the Fool - Live. Probably doesn't count, but it remains a favorite. My 3 studio would be 1) Octopus, 2) Free Hand (could be my number 1 on any day) and 3) Power and the Glory.
It’s my go to as well, love it
Power and Glory, Free Hand, In a Glass House
1-Octopus- 2-Free Hand-3 acquiring the taste
This is a band I couldn`t get into back in the 70`s when they were putting out their classic albums. Just to weird. I`ve since come around, realizing the musical talent is off the charts. Very tough to pick a top three, but:
1. Power And The Glory
2. Octopus
3. Free Hand
This was brutal, but for today anyway:
1. Three Friends
2. In A Glass House
3. Free Hand
Extremely difficult to pick a top three for this amazing prog group. But here goes.
1 In a Glass House
2 Power and the Glory
3 Three Friends
IN A GLASS HOUSE
FREE HAND
THE POWER AND THE GLORY
3. Octopus
2. Free Hand
1. Gentle Giant, probably because it took me so long to find it.
But the real number 1 is Playing the Fool. My introduction to the band and I fell in love immediately.
1. Glass House
2. Power and the Glory
3. Free Hand
The list can change at any time and I’d say that Way of Life is probably my favorite of their songs right now. Kerry’s vocal break into the ending is glorious
1 - Three Friends
2 - In a Glass House
3 - Octopus
4 - The Power and the Glory
5 - Gentle Giant
6 - Interview
7 - Free Hand
8 - Acquiring the Taste
9 - Civilian
10 - The Missing Piece
11 - Giant for a Day
Mine are:
1. In A Glass House
2. The Power And The Glory
3. Octopus
All perfect albums to these ears.
Octopus, Interview, Freehand
1. Octopus
2. Free Hand
3. The Power & The Glory
3. The Power and the Glory - Maybe my favorite album songs-wise. All of the material on here is great and it doesn’t really have any that stand out as lesser to me. It also has my favorite Gentle Giant song, “The Face.” It’s not my number 1 or 2 because I don’t think it’s as great a full album listen as my next 2.
2. In a Glass House - I’m a sucker for any album with a strong opener and an even stronger closer, and WOW, does this album exemplify that. “The Runaway” is a top 10 Gentle Giant song for me and “In a Glass House” is my number 2 of their catalog. I’m not as big a fan of the material between those two songs, which keeps it from being my favorite album, but it’s still a fantastic listen nonetheless.
1. Three Friends - This was the album that got me into Gentle Giant after failing to connect with Octopus (Funnily enough, Octopus is still my least favorite of their albums from 1972 through 1976). This album possibly has my favorite concept of any concept album. I like the story of the album a lot and I love the music on it even more. The songs for each of the Three Friends (“Working All Day,” “Peel the Paint,” and “Mister Class and Quality?”) are all top tier GG songs, and the title track closes the album with sonic bliss. It’s pretty much a perfect album to my ears and at this point, none of the other Gentle Giant albums come close to it.
1- In a Glass House
2- Octupus
3- Power and the Glory
1. Octopus
2. In a Glass House
3. Three Friends
1. Power and the Glory
2. Octopus

Interview
Great show! I only got into GG a little over a year ago thanks to Scot@TheProgCorner but they have quickly become a favourite prog band for me. My top 3 right now are Octopus, Free Hand, and Three Friends but I have really been getting into Interview lately (my most recent purchase) so it could slip into the top 3 in the future. I’m not very familiar with a few of their albums so it is still a work I progress that I look forward to exploring!
What are the other albums you dont have/own?
@@1359401 I don’t own any of the records before Three Friends or after The Missing Piece and I don’t have In a Glass House either. I really should track down copies of the first 2…they are next on the to-do list.
@@1359401 I don’t have the first two, In A Glass House, or any after The Missing Piece…yet..
@@1359401I don’t own the debut, Civilian, Acquiring the Taste or Giant For a Day but I have heard them on streaming. I also recently snagged a copy of their Playing the Fool double live album and it it brilliant!
1- Octopus 2- In A Glass House 3- Three Friends
For me, when it comes to GG what I consider their best and what are my favourites (ie an album I'm likely to reach for) rarely converge. The one exception is Octopus which I consider their best AND is my personal favourite. Free hand is a bit uneven in some ways but it's still in my 3 most favourite GG albums- it's very accessible but still has that medieval aura about it and On Reflection is pure genius and fun to listen to. I also absolutely love Missing Piece possibly because it was literally the first album of theirs I heard but even in hindsight having bought and repeatedly listened to all their albums I still rank it very highly as a favourite. I think on that album they manage to maintain their Prog roots while being accessible which is a balance few Prog bands achieved.
Anyway my 3 Favourite albums are
1.Octopus
2.Free Hand
3.The Missing Piece
1. Free Hand
2. Power and the glory
3. Three Friends
1 - Octopus
2 - In a glass house
3 - Three friends
For me it's probably:
3. Three Friends
2. Octopus
1. In A Glass House
but as all say, it's impossible. Actually, these days I only listen to Interview and Civilian, I find those albums very peculiar and exciting for me and I think they are vastly underappreciated. Wouldn't go that far to put them in top3, but in a certain mood it's really tempting to do that.
1. free hand
2. the power and the glory
3. octopus
My top three are: 3. The Power and the Glory, 2. Three Friends, 1. Octopus. Three Friends (the song) is great by itself and one of the greatest album closures ever.
Like Ken, it's
3. Octopus (I love "River" too, Chuck)
2. Free Hand
1. The Power & the Glory
Love them all yep even giant for a day.The greatest most epic legendary unique innovative genius band ever end of story mic drop.
1 - Free Hand 2 - Octopus 3 - Three Friends
In a Glass House
Very hard to pick 3 which means excluding other great albums:
1) Acquiring the Taste
2) Octopus
3) Free Hand
This was tough
1. In a Glass House
2. Octopus
3. Free Hand
Yikes!
That’s all we received as comp for Diontae? I think it’s a little light. A 3rd or 4th round draft pick in addition to the 6th round draft pick as well as Jackson would have been appropriate.
I think you commented on the wrong video
I guess It could happen to the best of us))
I wonder if the Gentle Giant top 3 got posted to the sports video comments?!
(N.b. Apologies for not knowing the sport, I'm British))
