@KenGolden @ChuckAlvarez Abdul Mati Klarwein was one of my favorite cover artists. Mati's first foray into the world of album covers ended with a glorious failure. In the late 50's he was listening to jazz, a time when new artists were exploring the intersection of jazz, classical, and ethnic music. One of them was Yusef Lateef, Mati created a painting of Yusef amid colorful flowers and sent it to the musician, labeled as "Original Portrait of the Great Yusef Lateef Hand Painted by Abdul Mati". Lateef, a devoted Muslim, liked not only the painting but also the fact that it was created by a person named Abdul, undoubtedly a man of color. "Dear Bro" he replied to the artist, inviting him to meet and discuss future album covers after a set at the Five Spot jazz club in New York City. What ensued could have finished Klarwein's album art career that night. When the concert was over, Mati addressed himself to Yusef, he looked at him but continued his discussion with others at the table. So he addressed him again and introduced himself as the artist who'd sent him the portrait. Once again he was ignored and this time he didn't even look up..."The reason for the rude behavior on Lateef's behalf was simple: to him, Klarwein was of the wrong color: Prejudice works both ways. Mati was friends with Jimi Hendrix and was working on a painting for a record cover to an album that was never finished, where Jimi and Gil Evans were collaborating. Unfortunately, Jimi died during the recording and it was never released. Demand for Mati Klarwein's art in the music business increased with the popularity of Miles Davis and Santana covers. More albums featured his work in the next few years, some commissioned and some based on existing paintings. In 1970 there was a cover for Buddy Miles - 'Message to the People", and Jackie Mclean - "Demon's Dance", 1971 The Chamber Brothers - "Grain of Sand", and in 1972 Earth, Wind & Fire - "Last Days and Time", and Osibisa - "Heads".
About two years ago I was outbid on a Mati Klarwein painting. It heavily featured cats and I’m a dog person not into cats so I dropped out of the bidding. The painting didn’t sell for as much as I would have thought. Nice piece. I hope it found a good home.
I would definitely have to go with… 1. jethro tull: aqualung 2. Yes: Relayer 3. King crimson: In the court of the crimson king 4. Kansas: song for America 5. Rush: fly by night 6. Jethro Tull: thick as a brick
Italian band Le Orme- Uomo Di Pezza album cover is beautiful. Two new album covers- Caligonaut's- Magnified As Giants and the Baroness's album "Stone". The lead singer for Baroness paints all their covers and the new album is my favorite.
My favorite album covers: 1. Kokkyou Junreika by J.A.Caesar 2. Music inspired by lord of the rings by Bo Hansson 3. Framtiden by Älgarnas Trädgård 4. Land of Grey by Caravan 5. Dedicato A Frazz by Semiramis 6. 4visions by Eskaton 7. Woyaya by Osibisa 8. Kebenekajse ll by Kebenekajse 9. Red Queen by Gryphon 10. Electric Silence by Dzyan 11. Ocean by Eloy 12. Geafar by Haikara 13. Being by Wigwam 14. The world of Kan Mikami by Kan Mikami 15. Days of Summer Gone by Chris 16. Lady Lake by Gnidrolog
Here's my five (different from any mentioned by the panel): 1. Phish - Rift 2. Magma - Attahk 3. Alan Parson's project: Tales of Mystery and Imagination 4. Captain Beefheart - Trout mask Replica 5. Can - Ege Bamyasi (I know this is divisive...but iconic) Honorable mentions: Thick as a Brick (Jethro Tull, how come no one mentioned this?), Blues for Allah (Grateful Dead), Wish you were here (Pink Floyd), Leftoverture (Kansas)
Willie Wilson, not Wilcox, plays on Gilmour's s/t. British guy, from a Gilmour-produced band (Cochise ?). The mistake did get us a funny Ken Golden anecdote about the other Willie.
My top 5 would be like this: 1. The Alan Parsons Project - Tales Of Mystery And Imagination (wanted to chose I Robot but Tales is the best Hipgnosis cover imo) 2. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 3. Nektar - Remember The Future 4. Kansas - Kansas 5. Jethro Tull - A Passion Play
Much like Steven's love of variations on an idea, I love the three Henry Cow albums with the sock. You all mentioned most of my favorites, but I'll also mention Jade Warrior, Floating World; Gentle Giant, In a Glass House (with the transparency); Genesis, Selling England by the Pound; Caravan, In the Land of Grey and Pink; Wobbler, From Silence to Somewhere, and Thick as a Brick for how much fun it is.
Not really prog but have to go with Tea for the Tillerman, especially since he did it himself. Mona Bon Jakon and Teaser and the Firecat were pretty cool as well. So much great stuff from back in the day, but have to echo Steven’s pick of a “new” one, Script for a Jester’s Tear, my favourite of the Marillion covers he did. Has to be the vinyl version though. Like so many of the panel, Relayer is my favourite RD cover, it just fits so well with the music. Grave New World by The Strawbs, the vinyl cover with the three panel gatefold with the massive picture inside and great artwork on the front. It also came with a cool book with artwork and lyrics, something that always adds to cover. On the Threshold of a Dream, my favourite Phil Travers cover for The Moodies, my first ever album and the one that got me into prog. Another one with a cool book, early copies had it stapled into the cover, mine didn’t and I think I prefer it. My copy was also thankfully clarifoil free - anyone old enough to remember that? Honourable mentions … Nursery Cryme, which Christian mentioned. Not the best artist and the band were unhappy with the Foxtrot cover, but this one was just perfect as a cover and fit in with the music. I have the original Lateralus CD that Chuck mentioned, really creative use of the CD format where ordinary pictures don’t usually work as well as on vinyl. Wish you were here must deserve a call out for those amazing photos, done for real without photoshopping, and representing all those albums where you got all the bells and whistles like coming in a bag, postcards, stickers etc. Surprised Yessongs didn’t get a mention. Loads of stuff by Travis Smith, who I think got a passing mention. Land of Grey and Pink, mentioned by Ken The guy who did those weird Hieronymus Bosch type paintings for Cathedral. Not prog, but those crazy flying elephant covers Roger Dean did for Osibisa.
Alright, my number 1 is every single Roger Dean Cover. (Mainly the ones from Yes and Uriah Heep) Pink Floyd - Obscured by Clouds Styx - Equinox Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Messin King Crimson - Wake of Poseidon/Islands Rush - 2112 Uriah Heep - Salisbury (Demons and Wizards is with Roger Dean) ELO - A New World Record Hawkwind - Hawkwind Prog Metal: Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite Tool - Opiate (Newer one) Mastodon - Remission Opeth - Orchid Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream (Would be Closure/Continuation if it weren't for that white box)
Any album with artwork by Mati Klarwein is a special album cover. My favorite album cover of all time is Jon Hassell's Forth World Volume 2: Dream Theory in Malaya. Mati Klarwein's art, titled "Alexander's Dream", adorns that cover and it is extraordinary. Other choices for me would be Pink Floyd's "Animals", Faust's first album, Yes' "Tales from Topographic Oceans" and King Crimson's "Lizard".
In no particular order, Santana-Caravanserai. Utopia-Ra. Return To Forever-Romantic Warrior. Klaus Shultz’s/Andreas Grosser-Babel. Jeff Beck-Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop. Frank Zappa-The Grand Wazoo.
Chad, on your recommendation I looked up Captain Awkward by Moron Police, and it's a trip! Like a weird love child of Aha, Frank Zappa, and Creed. Oh, and for album covers, I'd mention the Moody Blues cover for Question of Balance, since nobody else seems to be. But I still can't believe none of you guys brought up Thick as a Brick.
The Keys album from Mark Mangold and Jake E has great cover art, with according the booklet, a secret riddle in it that I haven't discovered yet..... I also love the Kite Parade - "Retro" artwork. (Just to name two newer releases 😀).
My Top Five Would Have To Be: 1) Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior (1976) 2) Miles Davis - Agharta (1975) [North American Edition] 3) Weather Report - Black Market (1976) 4) Herbie Hancock - Flood (1975) 5) Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions Of The Emerald Beyond (1975) HM: Yes - Tales Of Topographic Oceans (1973) George Duke - The Aura Will Prevail (1975) Yonin Bayashi - Golden Picnics (1976) Santana - Amigos (1976)
Basically all the Mark Wilkinson designed Marillion albums. Momentary Lapse of Reason. Every bed is real. Storm literally had hundreds of them on a beach in Devon. Division Bell. Because I pass that scene every day on my way to work, (minus the heads). I have a photo of me with the heads when they appeared at the Their Mortal Remains exhibition.
Outside of Pink Floyd, my favourite (also by Hipgnosis) is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and not just the front cover but the entire LP package. I love the glimpes into Rael's journey and all the quirky Hipgnosis graphics. Their "surrealist realism" as you might call it is just wonderful to me.
going to go by only albums that I own. on vinyl. 5. Genesis - Nursery Cryme - croquet with human heads? a perfect illustration showing a pastoral scene with an undercurrent of menace like Peter Gabriel's lyrics 4. Art Bears - Winter Songs - made to look like a medieval manuscript, it reflects the old English folk thrown into an art rock blender 3. National Health - s/t - a hospital bed pov photo with band members and nurses and a random kid. the kid and a nurse are featured on the back, rocking out on a stage 2. Renaissance - Turn of the Cards - a Hipgnosis concept with some fun Tarot designs 1. Richard Wahnfried - Time Actor - a Peter Nagel painting with a baby, cups, and striped amorphous stripes
Just off the top... Golden Earring - To The Hilt FM - Black Noise UFO - No Heavy Petting David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Beatles - Revolver King's X - King's X Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow Atticus Fault - Atticus Fault
Warrior On The Edge Of Time - Hawkwind Time Honoured ghosts - Barclay James Harvest Moonmadness - Camel ELO ll - ELO (U.S. version) Trespass - Genesis Recycled - Nektar A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren
I don't think you can beat 'Close to the Edge' - no, not the inside gatefold, the graduated green cover with the band and album logos. Simple but, as the other Ken says, it stands out when you're flicking through the bins, partly due to the logos being at the top rather than the bottom. Other Roger Dean faves are Gun, Osibisa's 'Woyawa' and Motown Chartbusters Volume 6 (not remotely prog) though I could mention at least a dozen. Best non-Dean is Flash 'In the Can' - don't judge me!
Another cool thing about the CTTE cover is that the initial versions of it were textured--almost like a leather grain on the outside cover. They seemed to stop that on later pressings, I guess to cut costs.
Love these: Genesis-Nursery Cryme Yes-Relayer Eloy-Ocean Gentle Giant-Octopus The Moody Blues-Every Good Boy Deserves Favour Caravan-In the Land of Grey and Pink Nektar-A Tab in the Ocean Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here Steve Hackett-Voyage of the Acolyte Frank Zappa-Burnt Weeny Sandwich
Great show. Now get ready for Album covers that definitely represent the music (strictly alphabetical): 1) Bachdenkel - "Lemmings" 2) Harmonium - "Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme Saison" 3) Levitation - "Need for Not" 4) The Spacious Mind - "Garden of a Well Fed Head" (well any of their die-cut covers) 5) David Torn - "Cloud About Mercury"
For the front cover i.e. artwork: Argus - Wishbone Ash For the whole album cover: Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull ....there is so much to like and read and it's hilarious!
I like Arik Roper covers like The Weirding from Astra. Pretty much blown away by many stoner, doom, psych album covers nowadays. Like the recent Superskull cover by Black Rainbows or the whole sci-fi packaging of the Ummon vinyl by Slift. Or the art of Zdzisław Beksiński (Bellwitch, Samsara Blues Experiment, King Buffalo).Fantastic stuff!
Steve Miller Band, Book of Dreams. So many hours spent staring at this! I was actually jealous of the artist, I tried so hard to draw a pegasus that amazing. And the colors were vibrant and lovely. Asia's self-titled debut album cover. Really all of Asia's album artwork are simply beautiful. Queen, News of the World. It scared the living s out of me when I first saw it at the age of 10, but it is fascinating and made quite an impression. Later I got to explore the artwork along all sides, and it's really well done. Thomas Dolby, Golden Age of Wireless. Really fantastic artwork, esp. on a New Wave album (which, let's face it, aren't exactly known for great artwork album covers) Any of Journey's album covers are wonderful. Boston -- ditto. Rush, Grace Under Pressure.
* the first _Gentle Giant_ album where the giant holds the guys in the palms of his hands * the first Kraftwerk with the orange cone, in its simplicity * the ear on _Manfred Mann’s_ Roaring Silence * the miniatures on _King Crimson_ Lizard * the cow head on _Moving Gelatine Plates_ The World of Genius Hans Some 10 years ago I saw a book with the same cover as Kansas Point of Know Return. I can’t recall the author and the title.
Some that I think the art conveys the sound of the album : Arachnoid - S/T Harmonium - Si On Avait Besoin D'une Cinquième Saison Dr. Z - Three Parts To My Soul (Spiritus, Manes Et Umbra) Murphy Blend - S/T Solaris - Marsbéli Krónikák (Martian Chronicles)
Crisis? What Crisis?, Smallcreep's Day, Morte Macabre-Symphonic Holocaust, Livestock, Thick As A Brick. I need to be an amateur guest picker some night!
The best album cover artist currently for my money is Ukraine artist Igor Sokolskiy who does covers for the Ukraine prog band Karfagen. He is the modern Rodney Matthews. His imagination is off the charts.
Red Queen to Gryphon Three!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also Paladin 'Charge', Cybotron's self-titled and Krokodil 'An Invisible World Revealed'. Listened to them because of their artwork becomes their YT thumbnails (usually via Prog Line!)
Another great discussion would be "Worst Album Covers on Great Albums". I can't tell you how frustrating it is for me to love an album but only have a bland or boring album cover to look at while it's playing. Not to mention how it hurts sales of that album (or it did back in the day when people actually browsed through products in brick-and-mortar stores). A great cover can inspire a buying decision just as much as a terrible cover can cause a customer to overlook an album.
Just doing one album per artist but here you go: Alphataurus - s/t Asia - s/t Blue Öyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin Brand X - Moroccan Roll Camel - Mirage ELP - Tarkus Genesis - Abacab Nucleus - Alleycat Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Rush - Signals Styx - Equinox Yes - Drama

12. Geafar by Haikara
13. Being by Wigwam
14. The world of Kan Mikami by Kan Mikami
15. Days of Summer Gone by Chris
16. Lady Lake by Gnidrolog
Here's my five (different from any mentioned by the panel):
1. Phish - Rift
2. Magma - Attahk
3. Alan Parson's project: Tales of Mystery and Imagination
4. Captain Beefheart - Trout mask Replica
5. Can - Ege Bamyasi (I know this is divisive...but iconic)
Honorable mentions: Thick as a Brick (Jethro Tull, how come no one mentioned this?), Blues for Allah (Grateful Dead), Wish you were here (Pink Floyd), Leftoverture (Kansas)
Willie Wilson, not Wilcox, plays on Gilmour's s/t. British guy, from a Gilmour-produced band (Cochise ?). The mistake did get us a funny Ken Golden anecdote about the other Willie.
My top 5 would be like this:
1. The Alan Parsons Project - Tales Of Mystery And Imagination (wanted to chose I Robot but Tales is the best Hipgnosis cover imo)
2. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
3. Nektar - Remember The Future
4. Kansas - Kansas
Honourable mentions …
Nursery Cryme, which Christian mentioned.
Land of Grey and Pink, mentioned by Ken
The guy who did those weird Hieronymus Bosch type paintings for Cathedral.
Not prog, but those crazy flying elephant covers Roger Dean did for Osibisa.
JT A Passion Play is pretty trippy.
" Where were his spectacles?" 🤣🤣🤣
Alright, my number 1 is every single Roger Dean Cover. (Mainly the ones from Yes and Uriah Heep)
Pink Floyd - Obscured by Clouds
Styx - Equinox
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Messin
King Crimson - Wake of Poseidon/Islands
Rush - 2112
Uriah Heep - Salisbury (Demons and Wizards is with Roger Dean)
ELO - A New World Record
Hawkwind - Hawkwind
Prog Metal:
Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite
Tool - Opiate (Newer one)
Mastodon - Remission
Opeth - Orchid
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream (Would be Closure/Continuation if it weren't for that white box)
Other choices for me would be Pink Floyd's "Animals", Faust's first album, Yes' "Tales from Topographic Oceans" and King Crimson's "Lizard".
eric koodoos for the wobbler love it
👍
Ethos- Ardour is a classic, beautifully prog cover!
Greenslade's debut
My top 5 prog covers:
1) Peter Gabriel -:Scratch
2)Elp - Brain Sallad Surgery
3)10cc - Deceptive Bends
4)Genesis - Live
5) Yes - Topographic Oceans
Travis Smith´s Work is fantastic, Opeth: Still Life, Damnation, Deliverance etc., Katatonia: Dead End Kings, Death: The Sound of Perseverance
The Keys album from Mark Mangold and Jake E has great cover art, with according the booklet, a secret riddle in it that I haven't discovered yet..... I also love the Kite Parade - "Retro" artwork. (Just to name two newer releases 😀).
My Top Five Would Have To Be:
1) Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior (1976)
2) Miles Davis - Agharta (1975) [North American Edition]
3) Weather Report - Black Market (1976)
4) Herbie Hancock - Flood (1975)
5) Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions Of The Emerald Beyond (1975)
HM:
Yes - Tales Of Topographic Oceans (1973)
George Duke - The Aura Will Prevail (1975)
Yonin Bayashi - Golden Picnics (1976)
Santana - Amigos (1976)
Check out Moonlit Sailor album covers...and also Karfagen.
Where is "Thick as a Brick" - what a brilliant cover!
Enigmatic Calling is my favorite album of all time - currently, that could change, as Pete knows. Thanks for mentioning Pagan's Mind, George!!
Cool covers, as well as good albums, no doubt
Their "surrealist realism" as you might call it is just wonderful to me.
going to go by only albums that I own. on vinyl.
5. Genesis - Nursery Cryme - croquet with human heads? a perfect illustration showing a pastoral scene with an undercurrent of menace like Peter Gabriel's lyrics
4. Art Bears - Winter Songs - made to look like a medieval manuscript, it reflects the old English folk thrown into an art rock blender
3. National Health - s/t - a hospital bed pov photo with band members and nurses and a random kid. the kid and a nurse are featured on the back, rocking out on a stage
2. Renaissance - Turn of the Cards - a Hipgnosis concept with some fun Tarot designs
1. Richard Wahnfried - Time Actor - a Peter Nagel painting with a baby, cups, and striped amorphous stripes
Just off the top...
Golden Earring - To The Hilt
FM - Black Noise
UFO - No Heavy Petting
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Beatles - Revolver
King's X - King's X
Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow
Atticus Fault - Atticus Fault
Well, this is a prog show, and UFO isn’t a prog band. Great Hipgnosis art? Yes.
Warrior On The Edge Of Time - Hawkwind
Time Honoured ghosts - Barclay James Harvest
Moonmadness - Camel
ELO ll - ELO (U.S. version)
Trespass - Genesis
Recycled - Nektar
A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren
1. KC - In The Wake of Poseidon
2. Asia - XXX + Aura
3. Moody Blues - EGBDF
4. Pendragon - Love Over Fear
5. Klaus Schulze - TimeWind
Floyd - Animals, Rush - Fly By Night, Jethro Tull - Stormwatch, ELO - Out of the Blue, Kansas - Leftoverture
Love these:
Genesis-Nursery Cryme
Yes-Relayer
Eloy-Ocean
Gentle Giant-Octopus
The Moody Blues-Every Good Boy Deserves Favour
Caravan-In the Land of Grey and Pink
Nektar-A Tab in the Ocean
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here
Steve Hackett-Voyage of the Acolyte
Frank Zappa-Burnt Weeny Sandwich
Great show. Now get ready for Album covers that definitely represent the music (strictly alphabetical):
1) Bachdenkel - "Lemmings"
2) Harmonium - "Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme Saison"
3) Levitation - "Need for Not"
4) The Spacious Mind - "Garden of a Well Fed Head" (well any of their die-cut covers)
5) David Torn - "Cloud About Mercury"
For the front cover i.e. artwork: Argus - Wishbone Ash
For the whole album cover: Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull ....there is so much to like and read and it's hilarious!
First album cover that comes to mind is Brain Salad Surgery by ELP. Some of my favourite album art of any genre period.
Ken - what is the name of the Belgian jazz rock band you had - Doctor something?
Dr. Dopo Jam. They are Danish.
8:57 recently?
Nothing can beat the Roger Dean covers after that Hipgnosis with great covers
Yes every Album from fragile to Relayer
I think Hipgnosis did an excellent job with Going For The One. It's like an urban version of a Dean cover. Tormato on the other hand...
Really fantastic artwork, esp. on a New Wave album (which, let's face it, aren't exactly known for great artwork album covers)
Any of Journey's album covers are wonderful.
Boston -- ditto.
Rush, Grace Under Pressure.
* the first _Gentle Giant_ album where the giant holds the guys in the palms of his hands
* the first Kraftwerk with the orange cone, in its simplicity
* the ear on _Manfred Mann’s_ Roaring Silence
* the miniatures on _King Crimson_ Lizard
* the cow head on _Moving Gelatine Plates_ The World of Genius Hans
Some 10 years ago I saw a book with the same cover as Kansas Point of Know Return. I can’t recall the author and the title.
Some that I think the art conveys the sound of the album :
Arachnoid - S/T
Harmonium - Si On Avait Besoin D'une Cinquième Saison
Dr. Z - Three Parts To My Soul (Spiritus, Manes Et Umbra)
Murphy Blend - S/T
Solaris - Marsbéli Krónikák (Martian Chronicles)
The first one to come to mind was Comus - "First Utterance". Very weird and creepy.
fantastic show i love album art maybe my favourite is the androgenous one
Nice episode , thanks a lot..., "Tales From Topographic Oceans" is one of the best album covers ever made and the best album ever made by humans !!!
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
Hawkwind - Warrior On the Edge of Time
Red Queen to Gryphon Three!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also Paladin 'Charge', Cybotron's self-titled and Krokodil 'An Invisible World Revealed'. Listened to them because of their artwork becomes their YT thumbnails (usually via Prog Line!)
Just good time ❤
Another great discussion would be "Worst Album Covers on Great Albums".
Just doing one album per artist but here you go:
Alphataurus - s/t
Asia - s/t
Blue Öyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin
Brand X - Moroccan Roll
Camel - Mirage
ELP - Tarkus
Genesis - Abacab
Nucleus - Alleycat
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Rush - Signals
Styx - Equinox
Yes - Drama
Hey Ken, will you have Eloy, Echoes from the past on vinyl ? Is it impossible to get Ocean on vinyl? Anyway, love Laser CD; always fast delivery and in good condition. Thanks man.
We had Echoes From The Past on preorder for months on white and then red vinyl. Its not available at the moment. Ocean has been out of print for decades.

@@nigelelliott4901 ah ok, missunderstood it. thought any cover can be choosen as the fav 5.
@@adnilrummut105 No, no, it was interesting. Loads of things I love: Joy Division, Carcass, Darkthrone, long list. I think Chuck likes Joy Division, Pete hates them, don't think the rest are keen. 😂
You covered the lot 😂
